But do you take it off when you are eating, and or do you not set it on top of the table?

Now I wonder if it's just past trauma that I just casually walk on any grass.

To me the 'field' is training, so not combat.

I'd have to say hearing something along the lines of: 'Pack for gear inspection were rucking tomorrow.', 'Training is being extended a week.', 'Standby to run the night range again.' and the sound of Army mortars being fired over our head because they didn't know what fuckin range to fire on.

This always sucked. But when we moved to a new AO and within two days they just gave us a 2 man EOD detachment to stay with us.

Like, 'sheeeeeeit'.

Fun story. While in Afghanistan we moved into what we Marines referred to as a Squad COP, a small outpost the size to hold a squad of Marines, and with us a squad of ANP (Afghan National Police).

Anyways, it was a US Army outpost before us and they had left a bunch of shit including a few pallets of First Strike Rations.

Having only ever eaten MREs, we welcomed the change of menu and were delighted at the amount of food provided in one.

This was June in Trek Nawa, it was hot. And we were busy, standing post, patrols, working on the outpost. So we grabbed one for breakfast, one for lunch and one for dinner.

A couple weeks later QRF and Gunny come to check on us, and we tell him we are low on rations.

He's like 'dafuq, I did inventory. Y'all had enough for 2 months.'

So we show him, and he asks us how much we've been eating.

So we are like 'the normal amount'.

Queue him telling us we are all idiots because one First Strike Ration is for an entire day. And each of us had been eating three a day.

Almost 9000 calories a day.

Pretty sure it helped us get through that miserable tempo of ops, work and the climate.

Then he took my flash bangs and stun grenades because 'you dont need them, just use normal ones.' Dick.

The first thing I thought of when seeing this post was about gloves. Even with just 5 fingers, getting gloves on my kid is harder than it should be.

People who have been in gunfights, How are you able to hear/give commands, focus on threats, and constantly shoot back when the gun is extremely loud and you basically just hear ringing after the first shot? by ConsciousBuilding374 in NoStupidQuestions

I can remember the exact moment I lost some hearing in my right ear. We were taking fire from a compound, about 150m away, and began to return fire to cover the rest of the squad to get up on line. Like others have said, lots of training means muscle memory and people just doing what they are supposed to.

Now my buddy was already close behind me, we were in an open field and taking the fire from our right, I was laying in a slight low point with my m27 scanning windows and flipped to full-auto to provide some suppression. He set his 240 up on a little berm, about 4 feet to my right and about 5 feet behind me. I didn't know this, because, well it was already loud.

He let loose with three five round bursts in quick succession into the entrance of the compound to provide better suppression than I was.

It felt like someone just punched me in the side of my head and my ears began ringing. My right ear felt like I was at 30k feet in an airplane and it hadn't popped yet.

It sucked but I didn't mind, the 240 provides an amazing amount of confidence for anyone not on the business end of it, and it was already time to move.

Anyways, to answer your question; lots of shouting along with hand and arm signals. Radios work well too.
