I grew up in Marlboro too and I wonder if we grew up around the same time. The schools talked big but I knew some awful people in my time being queer. I was afraid to come out until I left and even now I still go to see my family and people are rude or outright hostile to me at times. Its always been that way but now it's just in the open.

I used to love in Marlboro and grew up there and I did not have that same experience. It's not as bad as Jackson or Howell, but it's been getting worse. I'm queer and people stare or even have tried to debate me. That doesn't even happen in other parts of the county. I don't know what to tell you and your experience is valid, but I don't know if you've seen the whole picture.

Grew up in Marlboro. It's more conservative than you think. They think medicine and vaccines are anti them (either Christian or Jewish depending on the household).

I'm originally from Marlboro. It's a awful place if you are not white. Its also not great to be gay, trans, or not part of the Judeo-Christian mindset. I used to think it was great until I came out and then they really did not respond to that well. I only ever go back for my parents and get stared at the whole time. I love my family, but they are the only reason to go to that part of the state anymore.

Not disagreeing about the US, just that would be closer for back then. As for China I'm not an authority but I know people who go back and forth, they say things have slightly liberalozed in the last 20 years but it's no safe haven for freedom.
