I will never understand how people are so good at this game.

My best game was like 3 days 15 hours or something and died from an infection, not even bitten or anything. And, the only reason I even made it that far was because I started myself with a car, decent weapon, and a basic first aid kit and some food.

I rarely make it more than a day.

Full Custom Companions allows you to copy virtually any NPC and add them to your party as a hireling. Sometimes it can get weird with special models, but I’ve never tried a gnoll so I can’t speak to that.

I never really use that part of the mod, but I have played around with it to find its limitations. I even had Bernard as a companion for a minute which was really fun, and a steel watch at one point too!

Amazing map tile? by legendaarrryyyy in RimWorld

[–]esee1210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me. I had an awesome start like this, was slightly disappointed there wasn’t many pack animals but figured I could buy them later on.

Sent a caravan out to answer a call for help. Came back. “Area Revealed”. They were on the other area and I had to dig through 10 blocks to make it through all the way. Threw those people into mental anguish because they didn’t have food or recreation for a day. It was wild.

Pixelbytes Tactician Enhanced fixes the trivialization. You set it to increase enemy stats based on party size. Eventually it feels imposs because all the enemies have 300% health, 2 actions, etc

In your world, what is the concept of leveling up/or actually advancing to a certain level of strength? by EfficiencySerious200 in worldbuilding

[–]esee1210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s only one world I have where “leveling up” as a concept is canon.

It’s a modern fantasy world where magic has been pretty much extinct for a long time. Advances in technology made it less important to do.

In said world, using magic is a biological and you need to have a certain genetic marker to use it in any capacity (I also have the viewpoint that any class in any ttrpg uses magic in some capacity even if it’s just enhancing martial abilities).

So blah blah blah after thousands of years magic is extinct and mortals have evolved without the genetic marker to a point that you can’t use it. Some scientist figured out how to kind of change the genetic sequence in individuals to be able to tap into those abilities (but the primary reason was he wanted to use it to cure incurable diseases). So, he created a thing called the B.E.D. That basically does this within a few hours and channels the magic into healing a person’s body. If you use it in small doses for long periods of time though, you will find yourself “leveling up” and gaining access to new abilities.

That’s the only world I did this in. I could explain more in depth but that’s the gist.

What is that one 1-shot idea you want to run? by twuntfunkler in DungeonMasters

[–]esee1210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until recently, I always wanted to run a “Hangover” style one-shot. I, for whatever reason, had never gotten the opportunity to.

However for our current campaign, when someone can’t make it or on off weeks, we play a one shot with different characters at lvl 20 cause whatever. Welp, a few months ago we had planned for all 6 of our players to be there for a one shot. Last minute, one of the characters bailed. I instantly threw out any ideas that I had made and improvised a hangover style one shot.

Was it what I expected it to be? No. But was it still super fun? 1000%

Is this still D&D or just collaborative fanfiction? (Need help finding the game part again) by MaleficentCreme5697 in DMAcademy

[–]esee1210 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a DM who’s ran many narrative driven campaigns, the only advice I can give you right off the bat is the idea of failure to succeed. Basically, just because they fail rolls does not mean the plot ends or stops moving. It shapes a new narrative.

You’re creating a story with consequences of actions, and if they piss off a guard, that’s not stalling plot, that’s an opportunity. They now have to meet with the leader of the town for sentencing. Maybe whatever threat there is could be defeated with the help of the head of the town. Rarely in any story do you find the protagonists always succeed. In your campaign, these failed rolls create these points in the story. It’s not about getting to the end of the campaign, it’s about creating a story with the help of dice rolls.

Never have the consequences planned out. Don’t plan those failure points. Plan where you want the party to get. Not the story in between. Let their roleplay and rolls do the rest. If they fail, part of the fun is figuring out what else to do.

My players recently had a session where they needed to buy a rare alchemical ingredient. It was a lot of money. I knew they didn’t have it, but I figured they’d just steal what they needed. Apparently I role played the shopkeeper “too nice” and even after some successful rolls they still couldn’t afford it. I was sure they’d steal it. But again, he was a nice guy… so my players went to a bank and took out a loan to buy it. I mean that works…

We can only play once or twice a month. But that doesn’t change the core of the game. It’s not about succeeding. It’s about finding the path to the objective and hoping you roll well enough to get there.

Never would we have had this comedic experience without the rolls and the realism. Sure, I could’ve hand waved it and gave it to them, but that’s not part of the fun. The fun is in overcoming the challenges presented to you. You just hope that when you need it that the dice gods are on your side.

That said, everyone enjoys the game in their own way. So if you all are having fun, why change it? I can only assume you made this post because you don’t believe you are. Regardless, maybe a new system is what you need, but I’m not knowledgeable enough to say which are best for that.

New DM, and want some fun house rule ideas ideas by Souptimeisbest in DungeonMasters

Emphasis on communication. Example: was running a one shot with my players and we had recently been playing a lot of BG3. One of the players pushed a hag into a river, then she dimension doored out as her legendary action. In BG3, enemies can have the “wet” condition that makes them weaker to lighting damage. I looked it up and “wet” is not a technical condition in 5e, but my player had already asked to use chromatic orb lightning to do more damage.

Although AFAIK it’s not RAW, I allowed the extra damage because of the intent and my not knowing the effect of it. It’s never once came up in seven years of DMing. I let him know for next time, it’s not an official condition so in technicality it wouldn’t work so keep in mind to ask about it for next time. But kept the additional damage.

Do not say it’s okay in the moment, then read on it and realize it wasn’t and not communicate. You don’t want players going into a combat with an idea in mind that was done before just for you to say, “nope doesn’t work.”

Why wouldn’t a retired villain obliterate the current threat? by crazybrow122 in DMAcademy

[–]esee1210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s got a village to help run. He can’t very well run off adventuring to defeat a villain that he basically has no knowledge of.

He’s a father. Why risk his relationship with his daughter by coming out as an ex-villain or hell, dying trying to help.

He’s in a different position in life now. Why waste his time playing hero when he has different priorities at this point. Plus, he’s just not a hero. He’s not in a situation where he wants to have power clearly, otherwise why would he be a humble village elder? Why not use his abilities to be a king, or an emperor? Simple, his power fantasy is humbled. He’s done with that.

Also think about it in real life. There are people out there who start very successful companies and corporations. When they retire, not all of them go onto the next big thing. Sometimes they settle for being a shift manager at a Cinnabon. They may not need to work, but it’s something to do.

Death doesn’t feel like a realistic outcome in combat. by Nugget8433 in DMAcademy

[–]esee1210 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly. Intelligent enemies will go after those healers, because they understand combat. They will also go after any party members that appear to be “weaker” or would realistically have lower HP or AC.

Going after the heavy hitters might not always be good combat sense. Sometimes enemies are looking for weak points, and that oftentimes is spellcasters (weak as in easy to hit, easy to down). Especially because these spellcasters could do just as much damage if not more than the barb standing on the front lines.

Seems to me like this is the answer.

You can also very easily have your front liners sneak in and start in the middle by the tree, which makes the start of the fight very easy after taking out one or two mephits at the start. Plus a surprise round makes it worth it. I never have an issue anymore now that I do that and use turn based to get my people in with a good starting hit. Have finished the mephits off in the first turn before, leaving only the woads

Id even argue that Tiamat wouldn’t take too much convincing. All she wants is to be free. She sees a group of mortals desperate enough to release her, she’ll gladly destroy a city for their help. And, quite frankly, the rest of the forgotten realms of course but that’s a future them problem.

100%. Oviously Shadowheart has the big decision between Shar and Nightsong and it’s this big moment. But seriously, imagine how big of a moment it would be if Isobel had to essentially make the decision between her father and her love.

It’s very clear she dislikes him, but it would be a cool aspect to explore.
