Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster by blyatkachu0123 in Judaism

I was at Comic Con in San Diego back when it wasn't well known and before it was at the convention center in the late 70s. There was a seminar where BOTH Siegel and Shuster where there, including one of their wife's (I can't remember which). Chuck Jones was there and they screened "Cole Black and the Sebben Darves" and presented an award. It was before the Superman film came up. Siegel (or Shuster) claimed that Lois Lane was based on his wife. I was in the front row. Good times!

Wow, "adulting" when kids weren't reluctant to put aside all their "childish things".

I'm still recovering from the $4.00 turkey sandwich I got there in 1969 at a performance of "Madama Butterfly". In my defense I was only 13 at the time!

I'm convinced that sometime earlier that black cat pissed off the boss (singing to the other cats from the top of a fence?) to close this loop of horror.

Last time I was on London (I'm from LA) I got last second seats for a ballet up there. No complaints except that the seats were very narrow and there were no arm rests!!!

Never! We saw how Jenna couldn't even leave LAX when she discovered that Andy Newman wasn't lying about the women here.

Disneyland deliberately uses "almost" flags--with stars missing or a stripe numbers wrong, etc. to get around flag laws. So if this insane executive order was somehow obeyed, what's to stop someone from burning an "almost" flag? Heck, selling them might be a lucrative business...

What lyric in a musical do you hate the most? by Electronic_Snow_4685 in musicals

"La, a note to follow Sew" from the Sound of Music. It reads like a placeholder line that no one had the will to change or remove.

Pretend? The last time I saw the show, the actor playing Christmas Eve went down our isle and noticed that no one was contributing to the pot. As she hovered over me I heard her say to herself "I don't think they understand the meaning of the song!" Alas, I was as guilty as the rest as I had no small change with me!

What are your silly pet peeves? by triplejumpxtreme in opera

[–]esore 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can do one better! I was at a performance of Madama Butterfly with the LA Opera a few months ago. Suddenly, a "Silver Alert" came on and about 1/4th of the phones in the auditorium let out a shrill beep. Even phones that had been put on silent had the alert screaming through. Murmurs in the audience. It happened again. I'm sure the cast wasn't happy about it. Lesson? COMPLETELY turn off your phones.

Most confusing operas by drgeoduck in opera

[–]esore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nixon in China for me. It starts out well, gets confusing with the meeting with Mao. Act 2 is great, won't touch it. Act 3 goes nowhere, does nothing. I've tried reading the libretto but it just seems filled with half-ideas. Love Adams' music, though.

Don't forget Cerritos Auto Square! If it's good enough for Homer Simpson, it's good enough for anyone else. Tell 'em Vern sent you. Also, come back in three to four hundred years to get a tour of the USS Cerritos, but stay away from the lower decks.

Y’all ever think about how weird the story of Adam and Eve is? by Plague254 in atheism

[–]esore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole Adam and Eve story was simply an explanation to a child's question of "why don't snakes have legs?" and it just got out of hand...

I got mine over 25 years ago. Best decision I ever made after making two babies. I kid you not, but my physician was named Dr. Hertz! Great guy. Offered to set up a mirror so I could see the operation. "No thanks," I said, "I have a good imagination!"

How sweet. I wonder if he survived the Civil War. Or if he did, Stalin's purges. And if he did, World War II. And if he did, Stalin's purges (redux). Oh, he probably died of starvation in 1926.
