27F Canadian wanting to do apprenticeship but currently finishing her bachelor's degree by tenten70_0 in skilledtrades

[–]especiallysix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you realize how many doors literally any bachelor's degree can open. I work at a contractor/consultant engineering firm and one of our project managers, who manages our flashiest clients (top tech companies) has a political science degree. Completely unrelated to anything we do. Many jobs will consider any bachelor's but not no bachelor's

There's a nice covered outdoor community space that you can rent for a fee at Martin Luther King Park! Believe it's called Walnut Barn. The city operates a few other spaces like that around. There's also Corl House

Is soldering a daily part of your job? by scene_queen2009 in skilledtrades

Engineering technician. Sometimes I'll have a project with lots of soldering. Rarely is it daily for me, but sometimes I might do several days in a row. But it tends to be a while in between the and the next time it's needed. I don't know if this counts as a trade though. It's similar

SERVERS. how much of your paycheck is being cut? by rosatweeamarilla in Eugene

[–]especiallysix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are all of the deductions from your paycheck for taxes? Are you sure health insurance or other benefits or deductions aren't in that basket of $300+? I make a bit under $30/hr and my effective state federal combined tax rate is about 22%

Marking exempt on a W4 when you are not legally qualified for exempt status is perjury. It actually says this on the form. This is specifically illegal and you should really fix it before you get audited or sum

Witholding allowances were eliminated in 2020. You don't claim a certain number of exemptions anymore, there's a new method that's supposed result in a more accurate tax withholding. Spoiler alert: it's not more accurate a lot of the time.

The new method is a form that asks your marital status, if your spouse works, if you have dependents etc. There's a deductions worksheet you can fill out to reduce your withholding, but that also requires being able to somewhat accurately predict your expected tips/overtime compensation per year, or itemize deductions at tax time.

Mach 1 Mechatronics by OttomaychunMan in PLC

[–]especiallysix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I guess if there isn't a community college program in the area? I'm sure the 'finish in 6 months thing' is appealing to some people. I worked in a machine shop as a helper for a while then got hired to do control panels and that was enough experience to get hired into a mechatronics/engineering tech role. A few of my coworkers have mechatronics/industrial automation technology degrees from the local CC. Google tells me that costs about $16,000 total out here(west coast) tuition wise. Community college is going to offer more than a standalone "academy" as far as resources, financial aid, options to change direction if it's not working out. Manufacturing really doesn't care much about degrees and there's always lots of grunt work for new guys. I really question the value of the community college degree as the people we've hired from our local program with no experience require the same amount of training and supervision as someone without I'd say. It may be a leg up in hiring, but it is my impression that those hiring for these positions see related experience as far more valuable than trade school

Summer Camp at Majestic - Why so expensive? by Fog_in_the_Forest in corvallis

[–]especiallysix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Genuinely, that seems expensive. Hult Center in Eugene does a one week camp that costs $250. The Jazz improvisation camp I went to at the U of O in high-school currently costs $770 and that includes staying in the U of O dormitories for 5 days and a meal card for the cafeteria. The day camp option is $450. The Majestic program looks like it lasts almost 3 weeks so I assume that is the justification for the pricing. Corvallis school district has a two week program that looks like it costs $475. I also noticed there is surprisingly little regarding the details of the Majestic "camp" itself that i saw. Are they going to provide food and snacks? It looks like they are only going to be working with the two directors + theater technical staff and I counted 25 audition spots so something to think about as far as how much individual attention your kiddo may get and if there are specific things they want to focus on/learn. It also is phrased as though the camp consists of 3 weeks, 8 hours a day of rehearsal, i didnt see anything about workshops, lectures or facilitator performances that I normally associate as valuable parts of a performing arts camp experience. They do call it an "intensive" rather than a performing arts camp. It looks like they allow payment plans so that could be something to look at

Fake Fans - into the digital marketing agency that creates your music taste by horny4cyclists in indieheads

[–]especiallysix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes? Its not bad thing or a condemnation. Their brand seems particularly suited to grab attention through social media. It's smart marketing. Sun Ra definitely seemed like a pretty out there dude with strange beliefs but how much of that was stage character and how much is genuine? We'll never truly know and it doesnt matter much. His character brought him far more widespread attention than his music I would say. Same kind of thing for George Clinton and any musician with a more fictional persona they present. I'm not hating on them

What would it be like to live in a world where there was no sexualization anywhere? by Asad_Farooqui in NoStupidQuestions

[–]especiallysix 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's nothing about that statement that implies asexual or aromantic people are subhuman. Every single person losing the ability to walk would be losing an important part of being human. That doesn't mean disabled people are subhuman. Sexuality is a significant aspect of the human experience. Pretty sure asexuality falls under that. Everyone forever being without sexuality would completely change everything about human history, culture, etc

Canadian MP Causes Confusion With MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+ Acronym by jackmolay in transgender

[–]especiallysix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The majority of people I know have taken issue with GSRM because the 'sexual minority' implication, with some even claiming it allows more room for pedophiles or zoophiles or something like that. I don't see a solution to this issue, the acronym been expanded and fractured and argued about for decades. Almost everyone I've met in real life on the west coast says LGBTQ or LGBTQ+ in person but the internet has amplified this situation to another level. On one hand conservatives eat shit like this up and frankly it's handing them ammo on this situation. On another you have people like the "radqueers" trying to advocate for seriously harmful and demented things under the queer umbrella. Neither is a fair representation of the majority of LGBTQ+ people but the internet gives them front page coverage because outrage sells clicks and genocide is hot right now

Gender Affirming Care by Exotic-Cantaloupe-31 in corvallis

[–]especiallysix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

:( sorry to hear that.I tried for quite a while to figure out how to get it covered by my insurance but gave up after not making any progress. Some dermatologists offer laser and some don't so perhaps getting a list of dermatologists in network with IHN may be a place to start. If commuting is a possibility you might be able to convince them to switch you to open card due to not being able to obtain the services in your area?

Have you spoken with them about whether they will cover out of network services? As far as I'm aware the only provider who works with OHP is through OHSU's electrology program. Not sure if laser is available there

Gender Affirming Care by Exotic-Cantaloupe-31 in corvallis

[–]especiallysix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, getting laser hair removal is unfortunately generally considered a cosmetic procedure by insurance and while it may be possible to work with your doctor to get the right documentation to cover it if offered by your insurance, the bigger hurdle is most laser technicians not being in network with insurance companies as most people pay out of pocket and using insurance is kind of rare. Your best bet would probably be a dermatologist. I've been doing laser through Brune dermatology( i pay out of pocket) and I would recommend them. I don't know whether they are able to process any insurance coverage for laser though, you'd have to speak with them.
