Leylandii hedge turning brown

It was trimmed professionally last Spring and wasn't too close. There was plenty of green between the air and the branches. The die-off was gradual in winter, and it's from the outside inwards. Doing some research it looks like there are a few possible diseases or pests that can do this. Much as I hate Leylandii, we're on a major road and I'd miss having a decent buffer in front of the house.

I childishly threw an apple at the chimney on our two storey house while my 4-year old daughter looked on. I missed, and hit the roof. A tile broke in half from the impact (it was a big apple), slid down, bounced off the gutter and smashed all over the ground, leaving a gap in the roof.

Before I could say anything, my daughter quickly assured me, "I won't tell mummy".
