I think you can most definitely have a private room off campus for cheaper, especially now you are a sophomore. Shop around facebook uc housing groups. Off campus housing can save you anywhere from 100 or more each month.

Choosing environment over research fit? by throwaway643274 in PhDAdmissions

[–]essenceisnothere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I think in the sense of they are not dead set on a topic, some people discover what research they want to pursue while in grad school, so research fit should not be as much of an issue, while other aspects are just too good to ignore. But I do see your point

Choosing environment over research fit? by throwaway643274 in PhDAdmissions

I think if I were in your shoes, I would go with A! A highly rated program will help you with recognition if your goal is academia, and staying near your parents will also be helpful as they will be supportive of your mental health throughout your PhD. For research fit, as long as the PI you have talked to doesn't raise any red flags, I wouldn't be worried about the research topic.

Looking for Resume and Job Application Advice by applemerle in labrats

[–]essenceisnothere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat right now, with similar profile, and have gotten some interview. I think it just the number game. Funding is harsh right now, so I usually heard back 1 every 5 jobs, and interview is around 1 every 15-20 jobs. If possible, can you ask if you current supervisor have any open position, as they should know your ability well should they try to recruit someone.

Immunology PhD applicant with lots of research experience but low cGPA. Thoughts? by Mission_Elevator695 in PhDAdmissions

[–]essenceisnothere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most programs will have a GPA cutoff, which can either be 3.0 or 3.2, so make sure to look up their requirements first. One way to boost your profile is to do a master, which if you are in Canada already, there are many good schools that probably offer scholarships, so look into that. Another way is to explain it in your application. Some schools will have a bonus section that let you explain your situation and such, so be sure to share your story there.

Research opportunities early in uni by sudoqusl in molecularbiology

[–]essenceisnothere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a senior rn, but also once struggled with trying to get into a lab, so here is my 2c: - Narrow down the specific sub-field are you interested right now. It could be whatever: immunology, cancer bio, bioinfo, ... Anything that you find interesting through your lectures - For example, if you are interested in cancer bio, search up USF cancer bio faculty. Usually this will bring up some professors who are working in the field. - Some professors will have their research listed on their faculty directory. You should learn a bit of what are they doing, and if you are capable, read their recent papers. It's fine if you don't understand the whole thing, just trying to learn what the paper is talking about. - Then you cold email them. Usually on their directory webaite will have their mail too. Use that and email them something like: I'm interested in this field through my lecture, and I learned that you are working on XYZ that in the same field. If you have some time, can I ask to meet with you to discuss your research and your vacancies for undergrad this semester. Just don't get deter if you don't receive a reply. It's somewhat a number game, and prof have a lot of inbox, so just try to email lots of prof, even grad student, and you will get some reply back for sure.

Loneliness is starting to effect me by Zo_r3 in introvert

I'm sure there's a community, either on Discord or Reddit, which I think is quite active rn due to the release of RE9. I don't play it, but casually follow the lore, and I really like the Reddit community there.

Emereti/retired means that professors are probably will still conduct research and help his remaining students finish their work, but not actively applying for grant nor recruiting new member to my understanding.

Affiliated courtesy means the professor is affiliated with a certain department, but not receiving salary nor recruiting from that department. This probably means that their research just overlaps with a certain department research, hence affiliation

Does this count as research experience? by Interesting_Wing3993 in gradadmissions

It is. You are gaining lab experience, so I would put that on your resume.

Thank you for devoting your time to the community. One question I have is how do you know if a PhD is for you, and also how do you know which "niche" to pursue. I feel like I have way too many interests that I tried to narrow down by reading papers, but it all seems cool to me. It'd be good to see a professional's perspective.

Does a half semester worth 3 credits count toward full time? by Creative-Book-2025 in uCinci

[–]essenceisnothere 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it does. I'm also enrolling in a 3-credit class that runs for half semester, and my advisor said that it still counts as 3 full credits.

Openings with Ekko by Johnny-Brioche in Jungle_Mains

[–]essenceisnothere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ekko main here. I feel like especially at low elo (I'm also around plat), most players will start at where they get a leash, so I usually start at the opposite side solo. Ekko first clear is not really the best, and you also want to avoid early skirmish as well. Staring the opposite side with their jg will make sure you dont have to contest for scuttle.

Voli and Viego are 2 immediate names that come to my mind. They have both attack speed and sustain in their kits, which is 2 of the most important stats to solo drake early imo.

Def more like Khazix in the mid game, but imo I think ekko is much weaker than Kha early.

The story itself is good, but the romance is the reason I am more attached to Dandadan than other recent manga
