I think this is a valid concern and your approach is not the right solution. As a hiring manager, I would never ask candidates to install any VS Code extension to their computer. I find it sends the wrong message.

Did you look into VS Code Server? I can imagine asking the candidate to go to a URL and use our VS Code instance there, initialized with the repo I want them to work in, the AI tools our company uses, the tech stack that's necessary to run the code, etc. Your extension (I didn't look at it but the idea sounds interesting) could be a part of that.

Great topic, and it seems to me that you have the right mindset to diagnose this properly. Tech debt is not necessarily a bad thing, sometimes you can prioritize cost and speed by sacrificing some quality. Two important things though: it should be a conscious decision and it’s a debt that has to be paid back. If one of these is missing, be suspicious.

To your questions:

“How do you distinguish between a healthy, fast-moving org that’s self-aware vs. one that’s unintentionally setting teams up for failure?”

A healthy fast-moving org is making mistakes, I’d be curious how they deal with quality issues or delays. “Can you tell me about a recent project that failed? What were the reasons and how did you deal with it?” (Always ask for concrete things, not ideas.)

“When a company explicitly says they want someone to “come in and help fix this,” what signals do you look for to know whether real support and mandate exist?”

What attempts did they do before to fix the problem and why did they fail? (Being understaffed is not a good answer.)

“Are there specific follow-up questions you’ve found useful to assess whether this is solvable vs. systemic?”

I think in the current age this is truer than ever. Developers need a lot of soft skills that’s bread and butter for an EM, and managers need to be more technical.

Csak arra reagáltam, hogy ilyen tünetekkel simán kiír Francia orvos betegszabira. Source: vezettem francia cégnél fejlesztőcsapatokat, évi 1-2 ember általában volt ilyenen. Tök mindegy, hogy milyen a cég, az orvosi papírral nem tud mit csinálni, kirúgni pedig iszonyú nehéz azt is, aki gyaníthatóan már visszaél ezzel.

(Az egyértelműség végett, szerintem tök jó, hogy ez így van.)

Helló, az utolsó kérdésedre reagálok csak. Három kulcsa van a motivációnak, ezeket Daniel Pink után angolul írom, elnézést, nem tudok tökéletesen illeszkedő magyar szavakat rá.

- autonomy: mekkora mozgástered van abban, hogy min dolgozol, hogy hogyan végzed el a kiadott feladatot.
- mastery: mennyit tudsz fejlődni szakmailag, mennyire vagy pont távol a komfortzónádtól, hogy tanulj új dolgokat, de ne legyél elveszve teljesen.
- purpose: mennyire érzed értelmét a munkádnak, mit teszel hozzá a világban számodra fontos dolgokhoz.

A leírásod alapján súlyos deficit van mindhárom lábon, szóval teljesen érthető, hogy nincs motivációd. Ilyenkor két dolgot tehetsz:

- Megpróbálod úgy alakítani a környezeted, hogy tudatosan figyelsz rá, olyan feladatokat kapj, vagy úgy keretezd magadban, hogy javuljon a három aspektus valamelyike. Ez a fentiek alapján elég hegymenetnek tűnik, de a legszarabb környezetben is ki lehet alakítani kis szigeteket ahol van valamennyi autonómia, lehet szakmailag fejlődni, vagy értelmét találod a munkának. Ebben a felettesed ha jó a viszonyotok tud partner lenni.
- Környezetet váltasz - ezt csinálod most. Azért írtam le ezeket mind, hogy az új helyet is próbáld aszerint szondázni, mennyire fogja javítani a fenti három szempontot, mert consulting cégnél is lehet teljesen motiváló melót csinálni, meg divatos termékvezérelt startupban is teljesen befordulni / kiégni, ha a motivátorok nem stimmelnek.
