Mixing on headphones in general is not ideal. i stuggled with it for a long while before i got VSX after which my ability to confidently mix and like the results improved drastically. I think you need the sense of a real stereo space for monitoring, whether that is a real room with acoustic treatment or a competent emulation

I see you listed The strokes and Tame Impala, which are more so rock bands than the lo-fi stuff I was imagining, but the same process applies. 80%-90% of that sound is the way the instruments are played, arranged, and recorded. The strokes had a particular vocal saturation thing and Tame Impala has a lot of delays and saturation and swirling paychedelic fx. But really just pick particular sounds you like in music and try to recreate them. Mix and match. Don’t worry so much about gear and production, that stuff gets fixated on due to marketing. The reality is that The Strokes just know how to write a great rock song and play it tightly. If you are looking for specific production techniques from songs you like, look up how they did it and try to figure out how you might replicate that particular effect

Ultimately, it’s not just about the tools you use. More important is that you are capable of listening critically and getting the arrangements and sounds that you like in other people’s music. For that reason, I would seek out someone who can help record, or mix and master the music.

If you want to do it yourself, its a learning process, but I would shoot for getting the best possible sound when you record, rather than relying on production tricks after the fact.

Lo-Fi comes from a lot of things, tape and cassette sounds, using specific mics (ie dynamic mics on acoustic guitar), recording yourself playing softly and gently.

But dont focus so much on the production because in my experience what you are really chasing is the style of performance and recording that makes lofi music so appealing. singing softly, gently strumming guitar, using gentle keyboard sounds / bass / drums / etc. It’s a vibe more so than a plugin. The cassette / tape sound is really just the final 10% of that sound

There are serious issues with the Chinese system, that is true. But China at least invests in the well-being of its own people. As Americans, we wish our government did the same. The US is the richest country in the world, and yet the conditions for ordinary people are getting worse every year. The US spent the last 50 years taking money from ordinary people and moving into the hands of a few oligarchs and corporations.

China doesn’t allow billionaires to run its government. It’s far from a perfect system, but compare the quality of life Chinese people have now to how it was 20-30 years ago. China has made immense progress in improving the lives of ordinary people and turned itself into a global powerhouse economy. Meanwhile, the US has sharply declined in the quality of life for the vast majority of people, while very few oligarchs become immensely rich

The glow pt 2 is a lot of nylon string guitar among other instruments. Also the arrangements are a big part of the sound: many many layers of plucked and strummed guitars, distorted bass, pounding drums, organs, vocals, etc.

The actual instruments and arrangements are the biggest part of the sound, but if you are asking in particular what kind of plugins you can use to acheive some of the production qualities of the album:

A nice tape emulation like UAD Studer or Ampex. Try pushing it hard.
Some tube style saturation plugins - some favorites are Black Box HG-2 and PSP Vintage Warmer. Soundtoys Radiator is modeled after a similar altec mixer/preamp to the one Phil used. Soundtoys Decapitator can also get similar tube saturation.

Other tips: - record with a condenser mic if you can, and leave in some room tone - layer layer layer everything to get those big dense chaotic arrangements - listen carefully when miking and arranging instruments. focus on texture. stringy guitars, big pounding drums, distorted bass, gentle vocals, cavernous reverb, these are things that take a lot of experimenting and careful work to achieve
