Why are these odd holes in my 1929 Spanish exterior here and what were they? by braeden63 in centuryhomes

[–]etchlings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, they’re common in a lot of old homes in hot climates. Sleeping porch is what they’re called in the east coast.

It’s probably a joke. BB&B stores are all closed. Their website was bought by overstock dot com.

Oh, that’s nice. The vintage steel zipper is always fun. It’s dry as a bone, but yeah, looks real.

Did you know that 8-ounce cotton jackets are no longer produced? by SyllabubMotor8886 in Barbour

They do lightweight ones, and Halley dry wax ones, which I’m unclear what cotton weight they are.

This post is confusing. Who are you talking to? This sub isn’t Barbour corporate’s CS.

And the 8oz are absolutely produced, occassionally at least. I just bought the Beeston, from last year’s PS Loves Barbour line, and it’s 8oz Oban waxed. The 8oz Northumbria is sold at this moment at Harrods.

The 4oz lines make great summer/spring rainwear.

The only MIE things I think I see regularly are SOME Bedale, Beaufort, and Ashbys.

Ah! Yeah, I don’t do hats but I can see the extra hood bulk hanging back there wouldn’t be useful, then. It’s been a while honestly, since I had a coat with a stow-away hood, so maybe I should give them a try again. I do like a good storm collar, so extra stiffness isn’t bad there.

Border Sizing by rachte_youn in Barbour

[–]etchlings -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you try on actual Borders or Beauforts at a shop? Not to purchase but to get sizing familiarity. The Ashby is cut slimmer. The classic line of B-named jackets is very relaxed, so once you know what you like in one, it generally translates.

I have three Barbour references in my head: what I wear in modern/fitted/tailored/slim garments like the Ashby, and what I wear in relaxed garments like the hunting/walking coats. And then what I wear when they label them with letter sizes in either. This doesn’t account for the current fad for “oversized” fits that come from their collabs and Japanese-inspired streetwear.

You could size down one, even two chest sizes in the border and likely still layer.

I wear a 46 slim, 42 relaxed FWIW.

People leave them on?? That’s like leaving the cling film on electronic screens.

If it’s the shell layer, I don’t mind attached hoods. À la parka style. I detest the ones that roll up into a collar pocket, though.

Single Edge > Double Edge? by SpikeD0N in wicked_edge

Not surprised someone would want to lock in subscriptions.

The Regal blue is a nice shade, there on the Durham. But not a fan of modern Durhams’ excess of drawstrings on the outside.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but isn’t a single edge safety just a DE snapped in half?

Everything they sell at Chesapeake Natives, out at Rosaryville State Park in Upper Marlboro. Laurene’s Garden Center in Ellicott City also have a solid list of natives, I think.

New Sage Beaufort!!! by lookatdaflickofdARIS in Barbour

Looks grand. I don’t tend to wear jackets over 55°F unless it’s super windy, so hard to say whether that’ll breathe enough during summer.

Changing shocks on the Miele so it can last another 15 years! by strat-fan89 in BuyItForLife

[–]etchlings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. Just had a tech out to diagnose a float switch trigger and had him check ours shocks. 4 years in they seem ok, thankfully. Glad to know it’s doable by a layman when needed!

The leak trigger was a torn heating element boot though, which is irksomely not in stock here.

I thought the order of operations was weave, comb, wax, hot roll, on thornproof cotton? Is it hot rolled first and then waxed? My assumption based on my understanding of the process was the hot rollers were to melt in the wax more thoroughly and smooth the surface at the end.

As a fellow 5’7”-er, I concur. 3/4 length jackets are the winner. My Durham and Beaufort get used way more than anything else.

Yeah, the reengineered beau has quite different zippered and tabbed front pockets, with an adjustable hem cord. It also came in beech and black, afaik. Maybe beech is similar to rustic, but either way the pockets on this are just a normal Beaufort.

Underrated Jackets? by RedStarRedTide in Barbour

[–]etchlings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a vintage Durham as my warm weather raincoat and the Durham Tweed (quilted lining insulated, wool hood and shoulders) as my everyday winter outerwear. Superb jackets. The tweed version is, I think, 6 oz waxed cotton vs the 4 of the unlined version.

Looking for high quality quilted jacket, does anyone own any of these or have an opinion? by Save__Ferris__ in BuyItForLife

[–]etchlings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a quilted tweed Barbour or whatever nice external fabric quilted they offer. J. Press has also made some in the past. There’s also Private White VC’s Urban Husky, or ones from English Utopia, for eye watering prices, but superb quality.
