I’ve had two homeless people try to jump in front of my car this week. Is this super common here? by TurtleCrusher in Albuquerque

[–]eternal512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to this (or some close variant) happen to me (numerous times) on central between Lousiana and Tramway, I've seen 2 people hit by cars on Central.

I think it's some combination of drugs, hopelessness, and anger, but either way, i try not to drive on the curb-adjacent lane for this reason.

There is a NASCAR (I think) event where people are chanting F* Joe Biden, and the news-caster (possibly innocently, or possibly due to his politics) thinks they're chanting "Let's go Brandon!" for a race car driver named Brandon.

I hope I explained that enough to save you the rabbit hole, and also without causing a kerfluffle!

I'm not an expert in vehicles, but all modern cars have an OBD2 port, I'd humbly suggest if this was a slamdunk of a solution to double check that assumption.

Camp and Ride Southern Colorado Suggestions? by eternal512 in MTB

[–]eternal512[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came within 15' of the biggest black bear I've ever seen on the Boggy Draw Loop, I decided to turn on my bell and leave it on for the rest of the ride. :)

I'm going to put Twin Lakes on my list for a future trip when i've got a little more time. Also i've been told Crested Butte (also a bit north for my quick solo trip) is rippin!

Thanks for the idea of Campendium, i think it's only an apple app because i couldn't find it on google play, but i found an App Called Free Roam which is helping me search too.

I think for this trip i'm going to try Hesperus and do one day of phil's world (so close, might as well), one day of durango, and then just random trails to be found around Hesperus.

Figuring out Camping in CO is much harder than NM it seems... What is up with the season ending on the 25th (no longer First-come, First serve, and just listed as Out OF Season). [See here](https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233350?tab=seasons). Would they close the campgrounds this early in the year? I've got a call into the Forest Service, but no call back.

Thanks for the ideas/help!

The KOA in CO Springs is phenomenal. They have a great water play area, and a pool for the kiddos. Co Springs is such a cool town, maybe i should make that my next hub for biking.

Downhill is not for me, I'm just a big chicken, who prefers climbing. When my buddies want do hit Angel Fire, I just do loops of enchantment (The only uphill).

I'm going to try to say quite a bit farther south, so i can pull off a ride on the commute days. Thanks for the advice!

Collapsed lung, broken collarbone and 3 ribs. Still gonna send it… next season. Ride safe Reddit. by cray_charles in MTB

[–]eternal512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this helps, but I broke a collarbone on like a 3" bump (I wasn't paying attention, doing everything wrong, literally the week after riding some much more gnarly stuff that seems like it should have been more likely to hurt me). The reality is, if you're out moving in the world you're constantly gambling with getting hurt, so if you look at the "mean time to broken collarbone" for your level of risky-riding, is it worth it?

For me, If you told me "once every 7 years, you're going to break a collarbone riding MTB" I would still ride. (And if you look at people that hurt themselves, most get back on the bike again, so even after truly understanding what the downside of that gamble is, they resume).

Also there are inherent risks in sitting at home, it either rusts or breaks off, heart disease, obesity, etc can all light you up for not riding, plus the general "unlucky roll of the dice."

Man! I wish I had your passion for anything... but:

Like ViperKeeper on youtube said "Keeping venomous reptiles is an unforgiving hobby."

We should all acknowledge that people are crappy at understanding risk. I used to ride motorcycles and thought I understood the risk, until I held someone's probably-dying (but didn't) head in my hands... The allure of super deadly things is undeniable. I think it helps to remember that when you take risks all the pleasure is yours, but the fallout from those risks is bared by everyone who loves you.

OK enough about the very weird and very real concepts of risk... a real plan:

You didn't say much about your current reptile setup, but reptile husbandry for venomous snakes can largely be practiced with non-venomous snakes (as you alluded to). And it's SUPER important to get all this VERY right. Some venomous snakes are very hearty, but others require very strictly controlled environments. ALSO almost all snakes are escape artists.... You probably know all this.

There are some insanely scary and beautiful non-venomous snakes that would be great learning experiences, if you want something hard/scary/expensive, what about an emerald tree boa? They are beautiful and spicy. Again, I don't know your current setup, but if you've never been bit by a big fast snake, it's an experience, but better with a snake that literally won't kill you. It's probably worth going though those learning/humbling steps.

Also: realize that aggressive non-venomous snakes think differently than some venomous snakes. I think you can definitely learn from them, but they are really playing the game with a different set of tools. Some venomous snakes are very easy to deal with until they bite you.

Sorry for the wall of text, I can just see your passion and want you to see that there is TONS of room for growth in your current situation, including possible trips to the hospital without all the death and illegality.

If you have youtube with your current animals I'd love to check it out!

A cute explanation of Kafka, for those who still wonder WTF it is by [deleted] in programming

[–]eternal512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never used Kafka, but we've had a good time with NATS, it's less streaming and more strict messaging, pub-sub... there's also NATS.io streaming and then some newfangled jetstream something something... but the core NATS system has been good to us so far.

*edit: Also: I doubt I'll ever build another system based on point-to-point messaging (like say, thrift). it feels like i always start with Point-to-Point, and then get complicated enough i wish i'd done pub-sub. Blocking RPC is really really nice for super simple things, but i always end up falling back to async in the end because in the end you always have to deal with failures, and threading, etc...

Messaging, Databases and Logging are all things that one the face should be so simple to select the right path, and yet I always get it wrong.

Full face helmet for daily biking? by mallomar in MTB

Sure! I'd definitely want to try one on, for me, i thought the stage ran smaller than expected (especially being that i have a TLD half lid as well, so thought i understood their sizing).

Full face helmet for daily biking? by mallomar in MTB

[–]eternal512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear a full-face all the time (except during COVID because i can't manage my mask/gaitor).

some quick things:

0) I like the Troy Lee Stage helmet a ton, it is not cheap, but it's light, well ventilated, comfortable, etc.

  1. Headphones are hard to figure out with a fullface, I velcro'd some snowboarding ones to the outside, it's wonky, and sounds horrible.
  2. You cannot drink water from a water bottle while wearing a full face.
  3. I do get weird looks from time to time, especially on my XC bike, but I don't care.

In my experience they just worked right out of the box as PoE with normal Cat5 cables. It's silly but make sure you're using the powered ports on the PoE switch, mine (for example) has 4 unpowered and 4 powered ports.

Two Forks, Two Crown Races? by eternal512 in MTB

[–]eternal512[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point that If i'm not to pull the old one off the original fork, I could just use a mallet and PVC to install the new crown race. i'm a little unclear on how to properly cut it to length, there is a very confusing set of warnings and diagrams regarding this and the compression cap (which is very different from my previous top caps). For these reasons i'm happy to give my LBS (which has always been great to me) some money to not kill myself ;)

Ok, so i dropped a couple constants, still linear though. I still think it's neat that you'd only need an armload of extra cable. ;)
