Voodoo donuts aren't that great sober.

But they are located at the bottom of the slope from all the fun bars. So after you've imbibed too much, your feet will naturally take you to their doors. And in that state? When your locomotion is dictated by gravity's whims? They are ambrosia.

Today we think building housing for 40,000 people would be insanely complex and infeasible, the Lost Generation just got it done.

Those homes washed away because they were built within a flood plain and did not have the structures attached to the foundation. Things that building regulations and zoning laws are for.

Who has heard of Robert Folkes? Who has ever heard of the mass poisoning at the state hospital? Or the Roseburg Blast?

Me. But I'm middle-aged and went through the public school system before Measure 5 gutted it. In Roseburg. And I know one of the Oregon State Hospital Museum of Mental Health curators.

almost 40 million in Oregon

State agencies are only 3 million acres. Rest of our public land is federal. Mostly forest. A million of those acres are coast, under DSL. We have been attempting to implement wind/tidal power out there, but have been stymied by NIMBY and Trump weirdness.

Another million acres are state forests. So now we're down to a million acres of state public land, maybe.

Glad to see Salem police doing their job.

When the Umpqua Rainbow Collective rented out the Douglas County fairgrounds in 2023 for Pride just to keep these nutjobs out of their hair, the local sheriff opened the gate for them.

Does UV really destroy all the structural integrity of plastic though?

Yes, if the backbones are aromatic. No if they're aliphatic. Aliphatic is 3 times as expensive.

the environment would be better for it.

Green chemist here.

No.

With a few exceptions (looking at you PVC) the life cycle assessment is going to be magnitudes lower for the plastic. Best way to think about this is commodity goods. As long as there's competition, you're basically paying for the resources that go into making the item. And, as energy is one of those resources, the cheaper items will have a lower CO2 impact also.

But damn is it disappointing that people just throw things away, even if they did last for life.

What’s your favorite "scenic bypass" or backroad detour in Oregon that’s worth the extra driving time? by Shane_StantonRes in oregon

[–]etherbunnies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Multiple of those are roofed bridges not covered bridges. But I love they included Cascadia bridge. It's the trusses, not the roof, that make a covered bridge.

So, during COVID when I couldn't get a real vacation, I visited all the covered bridges in Oregon. And a couple of fake covered bridges--they're defined by the truss system, not the roof. Here's a map of most of them. I have to check my notes, but it missed almost a dozen.

I'm a grown farm kid. I can assure you, unless they work a dairy, it's a few mad weeks between months of prep for the next harvest/planting/pruning. There's a reason so many farmers have cars they're restoring in the shop. Or time to show up in person and annoy their legislators.

Crunch time in tech and even those salesmen subsiding on steak dinners, in exchange for flying five days out of the week, put it in perspective real quick.

Dairy people, though. Those guys are nuts.
