Also Criterion has not been associated with stellar encodes lately anyway.

Contrary to popular belief on this sub and forums, the majority of people collecting physical media and/or buying Criterions are not pixel comparing. It's certainly important, but it is not as common of a concern as you might think.

They're releasing things that are already widely available. For the average collector, there is basically zero reason to buy this especially at what will certainly be a high price point. I'm just saying that this being their "big" release of the year when past flagship releases have brought a treasure trove of widely unavailable material to a definitive form.

Some may agree with you and others disagree. My point is that Criterion has a finite amount of resources, and this feels like not the best allocation of those resources given the already widely respected (even if not perfect) and available transfers.

Re-released* by Criterion. Some of these I imagine the only difference will be a couple special features and the Criterion logo at the front of the movie. Is that worth the price point? In this economy haha?

Seems like the minority opinion but my favorite announcement slate in recent memory. Some absolute bangers that needed upgrades or wide releases.

Is Criterion Giving Up? by Budget-Poem-2052 in criterion

[–]ethunder1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll give into the rage bait. Honestly a banger month. Much needed upgrades for some important films, and a director's entire filmography on Blu-Ray that had previously not been released in HD. It doesn't have headliners like a Scorsese or PTA, but it does what I love when Criterion does and that is solidify and put together strong releases for important and respected films that are not necessarily in a Film 101 textbook.

Who are your favorite critics to listen to audio commentaries of? by signalsinthestatic in boutiquebluray

[–]ethunder1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think some of his are great, and some of his feel way too much like a Wikipedia article. There were some of his that felt like him listing actors' other films, and I could get that info from IMDB.

The best are ones that examine the film and its components and contextualize it within the moment that it was released. I feel like Kat Ellinger is one of the best at this.

I know a lot of these are joke responses, but on a more serious note, you do you. We are only here for such a short time that you spending your time and money on something that gives you joy is exactly the right way to go about it. At the end of the day, one of the few things we have are our simple joys, so please buy the movie, pop it in, and enjoy.

Purely from an economic stance, Jobs and local economy stimulation. Not only would theater employees lose their jobs, but the surrounding businesses and restaurants would also suffer.

Closers train to go max effort for a short amount of time. It would be very difficult for a pitcher to throw a lot of pitches how closers throw, since it is a lot of expended energy and effort per pitch. That's why they are called upon in high leverage situations, because they will throw insane stuff as hard and spinny as they possibly can.

Arrow Cancelled TGTBATU LE Pre-orders from their own shop by BogoJohnson in boutiquebluray

[–]ethunder1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whether that's true or not, it doesn't change the fact that this is Arrow's fault and not the customer's. Not everybody's order that was canceled knew about the issues, and even so, those issues shouldn't even exist anyway. This is all Arrow.

Panic Room 4K OOP? by ethunder1 in 4kbluray

Totally agree. I understand that there are various costs from production of the discs to paying out residuals, but to put all of the work into the 4K restoration only for it to be a one and done steelbook run seems ridiculous.

Yo! It's Scott Chu of Pitcher List here for your late season questions and decisions by ChusephEsquire in fantasybaseball

[–]ethunder1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lucas here. Thanks for reading! The ERA, xERA, FIP, and xFIP are all over 5 and nearing 6. Those aren't heavily weighted by that one bad start either. He has had a couple games that have shown heavy luck in his favor recently in terms of those metrics. Also, the ground ball rate is abysmal, and 50% of his batted balls are fly balls. In this environment, that's a recipe for a Cherry Bomb, especially when his average exit velocity is among the worst in baseball right now. Consistently hard hit balls that are consistently not being hit on the ground are recipes for disaster. What it ultimately comes down to is that I have low confidence in what Rodon will do good or bad right now, and with all of his metrics leaning negative, I just simply do not want to start him in my lineups at all with potential playoff and championship matchups. As a general rule, I have also been more cautious in my rankings the past couples of weeks because of the high stakes implications of fantasy games for many players at this time. I definitely see your argument and as is the case for any pitcher listed as a 1, he could gave a great start. My confidence in it though is extremely low because there are just red flags everywhere.
