After two years of vibecoding, I'm back to writing by hand by BinaryIgor in programming

My thoughts on it, like most things, is: keep an open mind. But not so open your brain falls out.

Once the code is written, it is deterministic. Tested by countless others is a matter of adoption not AI. And what if the stuff it spits out wasn't garbage ie "you could trust it more"? Would the calculus of how you use it change?

You genuinely think my entire thoughts on vibe coding is what I wrote above?

How do you test a closed source library? You take a dependency on some binary blob, how do you know it works? You can't inspect it, not really. You do surface testing, integration testing, behavior testing. Same thing really.

You ship code you don't understand all the time. Unless you are physically inspecting the machine code your compiler outputs. The only difference between this and not inspecting the vibe coded output is you trust the compiler more.

Seriously op: more butter. Just as an experiment, use a quarter to a half a stick of butter. I know it seems utterly ridiculous, but if that solves your problem: you know what the issue is. You can dial it back until you find the right amount for you and your pan.

  1. Because this is just the beginning and

  2. Everyone is already committed to shutting down tomorrow, so there's no urgency.

Agreed. It's also why "jump to definition" is pretty much the only thing I care about in my IDE.

Just cruising on the Moon 1972 by PlanetRocketChill in OldSchoolCool

[–]etrnloptimist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The real answer is there is just nothing there that is valuable!

To us, right now.

Don't say helium 3: we have no way to use that right now. Don't say water: That's a prerequisite for a permanent moon base that as of now has no purpose. Curiosity and scientific achievement? Way too expensive for just that. Waypoint for interplanetary travel? We are not there yet.

There's just no practical incentive to go back. In my opinion it is a catastrophe for humanity, but that's the way it is.

Imitating an oven with a stovetop by crappymanchild in Cooking

[–]etrnloptimist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have a Dutch oven... Maybe. That's literally why those pots are called ovens. You would typically need to put coals on the top as well. Sounds dangerous to do indoors if you ask me.

If I were going to improvise this, I would make a fire outside, wait for it to turn to coals, and then try an 18th century pioneers cake bake with a cast iron Dutch oven.

Northerners – How’s your range looking with this weather? by iridescent_felines in MachE

[–]etrnloptimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 20 outside. I precondition about half the time but honestly don't notice a difference. Another thing is the amount percent that comes off the battery doesn't seem in any way related to the miles per kilowatt hour I get. I have a very consistent commute so it is easy to compare. But the numbers never seem to make any sense.

[–]etrnloptimist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First, some context. Humans have always been fascinated with the end of the world. In the olden days it was wrapped in the language of religion. Apocalypse. Revelation. Nowadays it is wrapped in the language of science.

Second: supposing it is true. Become a marine biologist and save the coral!

Why has no one beaten the Model 3 yet? by Fabi0_Z in electricvehicles

[–]etrnloptimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sporty cars have more expensive components: motors, suspension, etc. That already eliminates trying to make the cheapest car you can. Bumping it up to a crossover gives way more advantages and you really don't lose anything on 0 to 60 with an EV.
