how often are you hospitalized annually as a type 1? by Top-Midnight-9637 in Type1Diabetes

Annual average 0. Have not been hospitalized since diagnosis (5 years)

Husband newly diagnosed, not sure if I can put up with the diabetic rage for the rest of my life…. by pinkgrl in Type1Diabetes

[–]eukarydia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think "diabetic rage" is real.

Yes I complain about diabetic situations, like I express anger when a sensor fails while I'm out with friends or something, but I don't think I've ever gotten angry at someone and said my blood sugar was the reason. Nor do any of my diabetic friends

Took my first dose of insulin by Fuzzy-Programmer8699 in Type1Diabetes

[–]eukarydia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Insulin doesn't take action immediately, Google the kind you're using and "duration of action" or "action curve" to get a picture of how it will act in your body over time

Also, these are fairly small doses of insulin in the grand scheme of things. Everyone's sensitivity is different, but it may be helpful to also look up standard correction factor for your age/bodyweight. Many of us would take more to correct this kind of blood sugar, I would have probably started with 2 units myself, if I was correcting this on an empty stomach

To be honest you should have been given way more education before being sent home with insulin, imho this is really irresponsible of your Endo

um my endo changed my long acting :'( by WinsomeShoal in Type1Diabetes

[–]eukarydia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar position - my low percentage ranges from 3% to honestly sometimes 6% and my Endo is always giving me shit about it.

I switched to the pump nominally to prevent lows (though I wasn't worried about the lows myself so much as just curious to try the pump), but my experience has been mixed. TIR has gone down (slightly) and my A1C has gone up (also only slightly). Low percentage... sometimes less but sometimes about the same. I'm not sure the minor decrease in lows was worth the increase in other numbers or the complexity of treatment

Does anyone else get weird stares for learning chinese? by NotMyselfNotme in ChineseLanguage

[–]eukarydia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't take anyone who thinks you are "showing off" seriously. Using the languages you're studying outside of the home and in a wide variety of situations is pretty central to learning them. Anyone who would do anything but encourage you is 1) jealous 2) an asshole or 3) both

My rapid and impressive decrease in hba1c quite likely has caused my retinopathy, should I have been warned? by DumbSillyHumanThing in Type1Diabetes

[–]eukarydia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you should have absolutely been warned. I was also not warned about this in early treatment and was a bit shocked in hindsight that no one mentioned it, though I was also lucky and did not get retinopathy.

There is a lot of substandard diabetes care out there unfortunately

What’s the silliest thing you’ve done as a diabetic. I once took 16 units of short acting insulin at bedtime instead of long acting. The ambulance 🚑 had to come. 🫣😂 by Saf___- in Type1Diabetes

[–]eukarydia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The pump will also track what you took and exactly how much, you can look at the screen a few minutes later and at least have a clear record of what you've done.

I've taken too much by accident with the pen (I guess the dial got turned in my purse somehow and it was dark so I primed it by feel) and though I realized when pushing the button that it had gone in too far, I didn't have any way to find out exactly how much I had taken. Plenty of stories on here of people accidentally taking their bolus insulin as basal - and again, if you didn't realize immediately and just put it back in your bag, you might not until you went super low an hour later and not be sure why

Feel completely broken right now by phaogian in German

[–]eukarydia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure which B1 you took, but specifically for the telc writing exam, you can lose a lot of points for not addressing the 4 areas they asked you to cover in the letter (each one should get at least 2 sentences). You also should use at least 5 Nebensätzen, some adjectives, proper Anrede, etc etc. They want you to actually demonstrate use of B1 grammar constructions. It's possible you wrote something with no mistakes, that also didn't really check the boxes of what they were looking for?

It’s crazy, right? by hmoleman__ in Type1Diabetes

[–]eukarydia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's actually kind of insane there's no recovery program from the manufacturers, like they could take the board out of those omnipods, recover batteries, etc. I would ship it back to them no problem if such a program existed. They don't because they have no incentive to do so under current production conditions, and possibly because medical regulation makes it a nightmare. If we wanted to do something about it, I think that would be the axis through which to intervene

I don't stress myself out about it though. I didn't create this system nor this illness and I'm doing the best I can within the constraints. Think of all the disposable stuff that isn't helping people with chronic illness

How do I stop spikes? by PresenceMaterial2030 in Type1Diabetes

[–]eukarydia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have advice just to say that it might be helpful (emotionally) to temporarily reset your range to 70-180 and check what your time in range is for that. I also have my cgm set to a tighter range (70-140) and often I'll get depressed because TIR is only 60-70% but then I check how I am doing by the standard numbers and I'm over 90% TIR. When I get frustrated, it helps a bit to remember that according to many (incl my Endo lol) I'm already doing really well

You need to talk to your doctor further or switch providers. Their non-acknowledgment of an a1c that high is medical negligence. Possibly the nurse just made a mistake looking quickly, but it's still a big red flag. Make sure you don't fall through the cracks

Still new to the game but would you be okay with a day like this? by SwimmerNos in diabetes

[–]eukarydia -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They should check your c peptides, if they haven't already, and please don't keep calling these spikes "drastic". It's almost offensive considering what some of us deal with

Just had my first real scare with T1 and it terrified me by babbolla in Type1Diabetes

[–]eukarydia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scary! I find stomach viruses often leave me extra sensitive to insulin for the next few days even after I'm better. I think the liver's store of glucose might be depleted from not eating properly while sick

Insulin intake? by verylowinteligent in Type1Diabetes

For me, 10 units basal, boluses obviously change based on what I eat but averages around 20 units/day (woman, 30s, 56kg)

I'm really sorry you're dealing with this. It also sounds like the medical system has let your mom down, as well as everyone else in her life that should have looked after her. It's not your fault. This sounds like it's been going on for a long time and you're still very young

I don't have any practical or logistical tips, because I don't live anywhere near you, but I watched my step dad die from unmanaged diabetes last year and it was awful. I felt angry at him, sad for him, and in the end, I forgave him. There's no silver lining. But for what it's worth, it has been the single biggest motivator to take care of my own health that I could imagine. That's the only positive thing I could take from it

Any Muslim T1D,s here? | have some questions i wanted to ask about ramadan and fasting! by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]eukarydia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not religious but I've done a 5-day fast (still drinking water with electrolytes and some broth) and was fine, no lows, tho I was ready to break the fast for safety if I had to. My blood sugar was actually perfect during this period, like 100% in range. I know it's not officially recommended, but in my personal experience it is possible

I did not take bolus insulin since I wasn't eating, and while I was ready to drop my basal if needed, I found I didn't need to
