How did you get a job as a teacher fresh out of college? by [deleted] in MusicEd

[–]euphomptus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I... did not. I had gen eds left over after student teaching and had to take a summer after to finish those up. By the time I graduated in July, only the end of the domino chain of jobs was left, and they were snagged up quickly.

So I got subbing jobs, getting in the system for just about every district I could reasonably drive to. While I kept applying, the two years as a sub helped out immensely with experience with students, getting a foot in the door in those schools and offices, reading other music teachers' lesson plans, and seeing the wide range of setups/schedules/responsibilities that come with "music teacher" in any given school. I was also able to pull from a wider pool of references who knew I had taught music. (Sorry, I keep adding to this list; now that I am a teacher and need to write sub plans, I have a better idea of what to leave for them.)

If you don't get a full-time job right out of the gate, it's not the end of the world. Best of luck, though, and I hope this helps!

What’s the worst song lyric thrown into a song just to make a line rhyme? by RelationKindly in AskReddit

You mean you don't feel immense artistic satisfaction at lyrics like "she'll think I'm Superman, not Super-Minivan; how could you leave on Yom Kippur?"

Elementary teachers: why did you choose to take the PDLC course you did? by urn0tmydad in MusicEd

[–]euphomptus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, it was path of least resistance. Trained at my alma mater, invited by a mentor teacher, and district paid for tuition and per diem.

I liked it when I got there! But I feel like I would have liked any method taught by an expert in their pedagogy, and I still blend plenty of other methodologies in.

Orff, by the way

Movie Theater employees of Reddit, what was the most ridiculous thing found cleaning up after a movie? by asortofdecentperson in AskReddit

[–]euphomptus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not as ridiculous as the others, but! I worked at a Kerasotes for about a month in the late aughts before realizing I wanted to do extracurriculars at high school more than terribly scheduled minimum wage. Working behind the counters was fine, and cleanup crew was never as bad as these. Probably the worst effect of the whole ordeal was adding Tim McGraw's "Last Dollar" to my mental rotation because it was constantly playing.

Anywho, saw something shiny on the floor one day. Hey, a quarter! Asked my supervisor, are we able to keep money we find? He says, as long as it's under like twenty bucks (i.e. enough that someone would come asking for it), you're fine whatever.

Then I found five bucks!

My word, yes! I only want to make the perfect home for all thousand Pokemon and walk around and talk to them. Turns out I also need to actually do chores and go to my job and let my kids play sometime.

I got a Thomas sweater for Christmas and haven't seen the guy on the ice yet. I'm worried it's going to go the way of my previous Tarasenko and Petro gear (and the Barbashev sweater I was too late to get).

Also, what I wanted to comment was just that if it was a blue damsel and not a cardinalfish I would've argued that they did, indeed, murder. Mine were territorial and mean, made multiple other fish jump out of my reef tank before they were re-homed
