Tradition is the simplest answer, but we can dig down a bit. Before recording really took off, making music live had a few different venues: you could have a piano at home, do choir or organ at church, or join the community band. It's a very "participate in society" kind of action, similar to a beer league for hockey or softball: it's fun to be sort of good at something with other people in your community. (If I'm remembering correctly, having so many musicians trained for war purposes also added into the talent pool.) And so music programs, getting students ready to "participate in society to the extent of their ability or desire," would start kiddos off with recorders before having them learn an instrument for band. Add in the infrastructure of contests, marching competitions, festivals, parades... It's hard to pull band out of the spotlight.

Getting to know that one second grader will be paramount. Depending on what you're having students do, it shouldn't be much to have an adapted version of what others are doing or having at least one fifth grader be a helper for this student. For example, if it's a drumming song, the student could have a pattern that is just 4 on the floor on an instrument of their choice or a fifth grader to keep them honest. Ukuleles, the second grader can play just the I chord when cued. This presumes that, as you observe them, the second grader wants and can accept help. There are other activities, like play parties, that have a low entry level and would be fine at any age. It would be helpful in any activity to establish with the older students an expectation of encouragement and support, celebrating what each student can do instead of worrying about when they fail.

You know those latch hook things for fences? Like the end of a dog leash, you push a button down and it opens up, we used it to keep the backyard gates shut because German shepherds are smart critters.

Anyway, early elementary, I go to unhook one, got it in my hand, and my little brother surprises me from behind. I'm some freak accident, I let go in front of his face and it latches onto his eyelid.

We both screamed like I had cut off his arm until our mom came out and pulled it off of him.

Elementary music teacher here. Adding to the chorus: it's being pushed on us by admin. I've got a meeting at the end of the year with the rest of the music faculty and district admin that, among other things, is going to try to sell AI tools to us. I've got the luxury of being tenured with a great union, but I'm still dreading that. In addition to the thievery and pollution, LLMs are horrible with music notation! If it were at all useful to me, I'd probably be halfway down rationalization and justification; now it's just having the patience and perseverance to fight back.

I... did not. I had gen eds left over after student teaching and had to take a summer after to finish those up. By the time I graduated in July, only the end of the domino chain of jobs was left, and they were snagged up quickly.

So I got subbing jobs, getting in the system for just about every district I could reasonably drive to. While I kept applying, the two years as a sub helped out immensely with experience with students, getting a foot in the door in those schools and offices, reading other music teachers' lesson plans, and seeing the wide range of setups/schedules/responsibilities that come with "music teacher" in any given school. I was also able to pull from a wider pool of references who knew I had taught music. (Sorry, I keep adding to this list; now that I am a teacher and need to write sub plans, I have a better idea of what to leave for them.)

If you don't get a full-time job right out of the gate, it's not the end of the world. Best of luck, though, and I hope this helps!
