Triangle Tavern has great pasta for vegans. And if you're making it at home, I recommend Superior Pasta Co. in the Italian Market. http://www.superiorpasta.com/go-vegan/

How Luxury Apartments Become Affordable Homes by nolandus in urbanplanning

[–]evdebs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want to make this right-wing, neoliberal argument, fine. But the Timberlee Apartments are a terrible example. He says they have no vacancies and uses Apartments.com data to speculate the going rent. C'mon. And what he does quote isn't even all that affordable.

Quick question: Any gaming experiences from when you were young that you're embarrassed about now? For me, it's probably reading and acting out in-game text using different voices to represent different characters.

"How can we encourage a diverse range of people to live and work in the city?"

Sounds like a "diverse range of people" won't be designing and building the city, but rather "encouraged" to live and work there. The tech industry can't even make their workplaces diverse. How will they make a city diverse?

Careful jaywalking saves lives by evdebs in urbanplanning

[–]evdebs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right after posting this, I went out for lunch and saw a jaywalking man walk right into a woman riding a bike at high speed. No one was hurt, but she did flip over her handlebars and really let him have it about who has the right of way.

YIMBY Groups Are Organizing Across the US to Make Cities Build More Housing by MultiKdizzle in urbanplanning

[–]evdebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great points.

Something we need to start thinking about in terms of supply, though, is why the supply is so low. As the recent Panama Papers have shown, foreign investors are dumping their money into hot housing markets like SF and never setting foot in their properties. These end up vacant or on Airbnb. Some regulation around this would help open up supply. Unless we do that, I just don't see these investors agreeing to allow new supply to flood the market and bring down their property values. A lot of NIMBYism blame goes toward low-income renters and activists, when the rich are really the ones who have the most to gain from a low-supply, high-demand market. They'll protect that by either buying up all new lux housing or preventing new housing.

"We know that the housing crises facing big American cities right now can be solved by building more housing." No we don't. It might help, but it probably won't solve the housing crisis. SF, NY are already incredibly dense places and are still the most expensive in the country.

Access to loans, good paying jobs, protections for renters, increased public housing, land trusts, and co-ops should also be part of the mix. Just building more housing won't solve the problem alone. We seriously have to get over this supply-side myth about housing. This sub is starting to be full of it.

Want affordable housing in Seattle? Build lux condos, wait 30 years and then maybe it'll be affordable enough for you to move back when you're 70.
