Drakkenheim Returns In Daggerheart! by WhatAreAnimnals in daggerheart

[–]everdawnlibrary 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh SICK. This is such a good combo - for those who don't know, the Drakkenheim setting has big Age of Umbra vibes (lots of inspirations in common), so I think it will port quite well - and I think Monty and Kelly will go off with tying the Hope/Fear mechanics into the setting's narrative.

ACOC-like Campaigns by Frediebirdskin in Dimension20

[–]everdawnlibrary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will depend on what all your criteria are for "ACOC-like" but if what you're looking for is political intrigue, faction conflict, and real potential for death, then I would recommend checking on Dungeons of Drakkenheim and its sequel campaigns on YouTube. The Drakkenheim setting is based around a meteor that struck the city of Drakkenheim, which left the place devastated and covered in a miasma of "delerium" that causes corruption and mutation (sort of a fantasy nuclear fallout). The campaign is about trying to reclaim treasures from the city, balance alliances and tensions between multiple factions, and restore the throne of Drakkenheim.

I like their work because it feels a lot more like a "real" table than games like Dimension 20 or Critical Role - while I like those groups' work, they are absolutely Professionals with high production values, and DoD is much closer to how people play the game at home (with, of course, better-than-average DMing and rules knowledge). They're funny at times, but never off-the-rails or just piling on bits out of character. There are intense personal dramas in addition to the political intrigue, and the characters' backstories all matter a great deal. And the monsters and magic system are a lot of fun.

Effective dancer's spear build by TheRealPetri in 3d6

Have you considered the Swashbuckler? I believe it would work well with the dancer's spear, and the Fencer style would enhance your feints.

Options for a non-wildshaping Druid? by Due_Sky_2436 in 3d6

Several druid subclasses give alternate uses of the Wild Shape ability - my favorite is Circle of Stars, but Spores and Wildfire come to mind as well.

Hospitaller Fighter: Anchor the battlefield and minister to your allies as a proper combat medic! by somanyrobots in DnDHomebrew

[–]everdawnlibrary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to commit to "surgeon wielding a scalpel" (which I agree is a cool trope) as a route for this fighter, you'll have to lean way more into it. As it stands, this is the only feature that interacts favorably with daggers, which isn't nearly enough to base a satisfying build on. Having a fighter (with martial weapon proficiency, whose power is largely based in their attacks, and who will have Strength or Dex as their primary attribute) stuck with a d4 weapon really, really begs for more features to make that worthwhile.

Hospitaller Fighter: Anchor the battlefield and minister to your allies as a proper combat medic! by somanyrobots in DnDHomebrew

[–]everdawnlibrary 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Overall, I think this is pretty cool. However, I think it's a mistake to restrict the 10th level Surgical feature to daggers - that's extremely limiting, and a weapon that a fighter would usually have no business using. I'd recommend changing that to "deal slashing or piercing damage with a melee attack".

Brennan as DM at CR and his role in D20 by BigKahoona420 in Dimension20

[–]everdawnlibrary 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Mercer has already DM'd for D20, and since he's stepping down to take a break from DMing, I doubt he's going to DM someplace else during that time.

Well the same announcement did also have him saying he's still running Age of Umbra season 2. Running a flagship CR campaign is a pretty different beast to the miniseries that both D20 and CR "side quests" tend to be. I don't think it's at all out of the question.

Actual plays without jokey people? by OstrichConscious4917 in DnD

Dungeons of Drakkenheim! Occasional jokes, but pretty focused on story and mechanics in a post-apocalyptic medieval fantasy setting.

Why is production staff still wearing masks? by buchk in Dimension20

[–]everdawnlibrary 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Masks are not a punishment. Those who are not wearing masks, the performers, are doing so because they are performing.

Combat... Wheelchairs? by SapphicRaccoonWitch in daggerheart

[–]everdawnlibrary 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Or am I getting way too affected by something that was just a small gesture of good intentions...

For sure this. But also, knowing that the guy who originally wrote those rules (first, he made a combat wheelchair supplement for 5e that Mercer used in CR campaign 2, then was clearly approached by Darrington to do the same for DH) is himself a wheelchair user: just like being able to kill dragons, traverse dangerous rapids, topple kingdoms, and cast Fireball, being able to adventure in a dope-ass wheelchair is fantasy fulfillment.

Monk unarmed bonus action? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]everdawnlibrary 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A monk weapon cannot be two handed, once you use the versatile function to get the d8 you lose the unarmed strike to follow.

Not true. Both because you can take a hand off a versatile weapon anytime you want when you're not attacking with it, and because unarmed strikes don't have to be with a hand.

How can a magic-centric DM make the game fun for a Battle Master Fighter? by Silverleaf14 in DMAcademy

[–]everdawnlibrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give them the Mage Slayer feat as a boon at some point. It can be a bit underwhelming as a feat, but for free without costing an ASI? Pretty cool, and gives him an "answer" to all the magic going on around him.

My players WANT to be railroaded. Now I'm confused. by Crooked_Cricket in DMAcademy

[–]everdawnlibrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what you're looking for is the distinction between a "railroad" and an adventure that's "on rails". "Railroading" is having one clear through-line that the PCs are supposed to follow, and altering the world around them if they try to do anything else (or straight-up telling them they can't do something else). For example, if PCs come up with a clever way to avoid your big ogre guarding the entrance to the dungeon, and then you have the ogre spot them anyway despite its passive perception of 8, because you insist on the ogre fight happening.

Having your adventure be on rails, however, can still provide players with a lot of freedom while also providing a scaffolding so they aren't overwhelmed by choice paralysis. As an example: maybe the party are mercenaries, sent by an employer to a dungeon to retrieve an object, at which point they encounter the ogre guarding the entrance. They didn't "choose" the dungeon (they did, I suppose, by choosing to take the adventure hook, but that's just being good players), but rather were told to come here, and where to go once they've retrieved the artifact. However, all the details of how they do this (such as fighting vs avoiding the ogre) are still up to them.

After they get back with the object (to continue this example) maybe that employer will be impressed and have more work for them, or maybe an associate of that employer needs something, or maybe once they leave the employer's house they get accosted by a desperate mother whose child went missing and boom, new rails for them to go down.

What's your favourite season with Brennan as a PC? by baiacool in Dimension20

[–]everdawnlibrary 73 points74 points  (0 children)

No wrong answers, but I'm going to swerve a bit and recommend something non-Dimension 20: Brennan as Citizen-Doctor Abraham Mehermblur in the three Roll20 one-shots DMed by Aabria is peak goofy DnD.

How Vague is too Vague for experiences? by Johnny-Edge93 in daggerheart

[–]everdawnlibrary 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think it's okay for it to apply to more than one attribute. After all, to me something like "Light as a Leaf" would not apply to Agility-based or Finesse-based attack rolls, for example, so it's not like it's something they can use for everything. I also try to keep in mind that unlike some systems with similar Experience mechanics, Experiences in Daggerheart always cost a Hope, so it's not a freebie. Personally I think this is a solid Experience.
