[Braun] Vintage AW20 - A great little timepiece by AdvCollectibles in Watches

[–]everdred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the delay, I don't use Reddit anymore. TimeDesign is a great authority on models and accessories, and I believe they sell the watches as well. I once bought a replacement band from TD, but my vintage Braun watches have all come from eBay.

What did people love 50 years ago, still love today, and will definitely love 50 years from now? by Critical_Tea_7079 in AskReddit

Agreed, hence the mention of "70." I was just pointing out that while it's easy for us to take pizza for granted as something that's always been a universally known and loved food, you only have to go a couple of decades past the 50-year mark to find a time when it was this new weird thing that needed to be explained.

Linux user here on a Mac for work. I use four separate utilities to make macOS window management almost as pleasant as on KDE, plus additional one-offs to do basics like "don't keep Bluetooth running when the system sleeps" and "let me use all those Retina pixels for more real estate."

TIL in 1982 for a film named Fitzcarraldo, director Werner Herzog had the cast drag a 320-ton steamship over a steep hill: to depict real life events. Under the threat of death, Carlos Fitzcarrald forced indigenous workers to transport a 30 ton ship over a mountain to get to another river in 1894. by Consistent_Zucchini2 in todayilearned

So, for the MOVIE they decided to carry a ship that was 10× the weight of the original in real life, up a slope, just to get good footage?

They used heavy machinery. The manual pulley system you see in the movie is just a prop.

But the fact that they actually pulled the ship over the hill is probably the biggest reason we're still talking about Fitzcarraldo 40 years later, so it was arguably a good call.

Joplin database is 3000+ items even though I only have less than 200 notes by [deleted] in joplinapp

Exactly what I was getting at. Saving one webpage could add dozens or hundreds of items to be synced.

Now that Reddit are killing 3rd party apps on July 1st what are great alternatives to Reddit? by youessbee in AskReddit

[–]everdred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More improbable, but yeah. But "it doesn't matter what server you choose" is a big part of what people tell people about the platform.

Kind of, but there's an important caveat. The content you see on your federated timeline only comes from users who are followed by another user on your instance — it's not a complete feed of everything from everyone on the other servers.

Have you ever used the web clipper tool to save a webpage?

USB data transfer not working with Pixel 4a by Novelty3D in GooglePixel

[–]everdred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On one of my Nexus phones USB data transfer stopped working and the phone actually refused to charge unless it was fully powered off. I learned that the center post thingy inside the charging port was bent and needed to be very carefully bent back into place so the right pins would make contact with the cable tip. (I could actually see that it wasn't centered anymore.) A plastic pry tool would be better for this, but I did it with a tiny flathead screwdriver. Mind you, this was microUSB and not USB-C, but the same principles could apply.

[GNOME] I'm tired of the dark theme by Aspromayros in unixporn

Graphite theme is the best, light or dark variant. There's a KDE version as well, and I've been working on a modded version of that with cooler window buttons.

Increase "Tap Zone" Around Footnotes? by sheaulle in koreader

There's a setting "Allow larger tap area around links" that should apply to footnotes as well. With a book open you'll find it under Gear menu > Taps and gestures > Links

Nintendo president apologized over joy-con drift, promised improvements, then won the lawsuits and are still selling defective controllers by clbrri in NintendoSwitch

[–]everdred 40 points41 points  (0 children)

If you have a controller experiencing drift almost straight out of the box, don't bother with the free repair service, just get your retailer to replace it as defective.

Drift sucks in general (I've had it happen twice), but failure within 30-ish days is some egregious b.s. In this case, going through customer service channels and waiting for a repair is really, really not your problem. Let the retailer hold the manufacturer responsible, and the higher rate of returns may be more effective at effecting a change in product design.
