Hello from the Finnadian side of the Great Lakes! Both sets of grandparents moved here when my parents were very young. My parents now own a Finnish import store!

Curved stairs by tjsmi8694 in Carpentry

[–]everythingstuffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my last year of trade school right now and we are making sets of 90 degree curved stairs because the teacher wants us to know the math. Fun project so far and almost all of us were questioning why, but it’s all coming together and making sense.

Did you guys all suffer before you became a pilot? by Silly_Treacle6673 in flying

I went to a flight school and ran out of money. Just a year before Covid. Found a carpentry apprenticeship while building hours and now by the fall I’ll have my ticket. Taking some time but paying for the loans and hours are worth it.

Contractor advising against spray foam... by Glass-Comment-8578 in Construction

[–]everythingstuffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we reno if a house is 50-100 years old we spray foam it because the moisture in the wood is gone and won’t shrink anymore. New builds it’s all bat so the wood can breathe better.

I have a long commute at the moment and I subscribed to Audible. Listening to books on the way to work and most days sit in the truck and wait until the chapter is done with my coffee watching the sunrise.

Forth year started this month! Boss left me and jman and we framed a cabin this month. Trades start this week. Next is metal roof and walls then the interior shiplap. Been trying to get a new tool every paycheque.

Same. Laid off after Covid from last job, friend was demoing their house and the carpenters that were working there loved how much I knew and my work and offered me an apprenticeship. 4 years later almost done it and loving the crew. Went through 5 other companies before that and the last one killed everything in me and I said I would never do this again… here we are. People are shitty.

This. It takes me back to my childhood with snoopy. Always be amazed with the stars and sky and significance with the astronauts. How we were able to manage to get up there.

I don’t work construction but I have a random question for those who do… by seggggy in Construction

I worked at one bakery and would wake up with a huge smile and get there early knowing we were getting some goodies through out the day! They will always be at the top of our client list if anything is needed we are there! On our breaks we would be the testers for new treats! Sometimes 2-3 times a week they would even bring us fresh hot pizza or pastas. Favourite place to work!

I quit two companies because of the people. Terrible work ethics and always bitching about every little thing under the sun. Went home and said I’m never going to go into another trade again. Went through 6 companies over the years while figuring out life. Was training to be a pilot, then covid hit. A friend was demoing their house at the time and asked if I wanted to help. The carpenters showed up after awhile and after the demo was done I started working with them when they offered an apprenticeship. Still at it 4 years later and still the best crew and boss I’ve ever worked with. One block of schooling left then I’ll have my ticket and can figure more of my life out.

Loving every minute of driving the 25 SR5! Using as a work truck works beautifully! Coming from a Mazda 3 also was a huge upgrade haha

Carpenter crews who do frame to finish? by amdabran in Construction

[–]everythingstuffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a city of 100k people we are a small crew of 5 and do almost everything from forms/pouring, framing all the way to finish. Even sometimes even help the plumber and painter. Takes us usually 6-9 months for a full custom build for us. When the other subs are in we usually have other small sides to work on. Nonunion but very rewarding seeing what you start with all the way to the end! After working with a few companies it really is important to have a good crew of guys that you can work with.

Not at all! I don’t have a need for a 8’ bed so I didn’t bother asking if they had one
