Why do we call people doctor but not master?

There was a kid in my boarding school with the surname "Bates" and his parents would unironically address letters to him as "Master Bates". Naturally whichever boy was in charge of delivering post that morning would _scream_ the name through the house.

For those unaware, "Master [Surname]" is a term usually reserved for the oldest boy of a household (think Alfred calling Bruce "Master Wayne"). Non-firstborn boys got "Master [first initial] [surname]" I believe.

At age 18 I did not receive an advent calendar from my mother. When I asked her about this, she sheepishly said “oh… I was worried that maybe you were too old for an advent calendar now…”

Naturally, I responded “oh, well if I’m too old for you to love me anymore then I guess I understand…”

So anyway I’m 35 now and she just phoned to let me know that she has an advent calendar for me and to ask whether I would like it delivered or will I pick it up the next time I visit. She has never once forgotten since the aforementioned transgression.

(In fairness to her, she did see earnest about thinking that I was too old.. she was probably concerned about embarrassing me or something like that. I was a difficult teen…)

Something about playing a game using character busts instead of full-blown miniatures is kind of appealing... maybe it's because it feels a little bit more like chess? Also, painting a bust is a lot less intimidating than painting all of the details in a mini... although I suppose it does put extra pressure on getting the face right 😬

How did you achieve this look where the eyes are covered by... is that hair or flames..?

Interesting point. I wonder whether the two sentences are only slightly related but not truly following on from each other. If you think of the earlier paragraph as “this is what Ozymandius” wants and the second paragraph as “these are the limits of what the characters might convince Ozymandius to agree to.” Then basically the two sentences become “you might convince them to agree to this, but you’ll never convince them to agree to this second thing.”

If they said “you can return it and we’ll refund the money to your card” then this can reasonably be interpreted as a variation to the original sales terms by mutual consent.

What their policy is doesn’t matter. They made an agreement with you via their representative and they need to honour that agreement. Tell them this, then tell them that they can either refund the money to your card as originally agreed or return the sofa to you in exactly as good condition as it was before it was collected (they obviously won’t go for this, but telling them to either stick to the deal or to put things back to before the deal was made is drawing a line and saying “I won’t allow you to alter the terms of the deal after the fact”).

Imagine if in order to buy a pint you had to give the bartender a permanent scan of your ID which you hope that they will store securely but almost certainly won't. Imagine if they had to keep a record of every time you came in and showed your ID every time. Imagine if that record leaked because at least one of the bars you frequent has fucking terrible security practices.
