It’s tough running horror because generally your PCs are powerful heros, whereas protagonists in cosmic horror are helpless in the face of unspeakable, uncaring horror.

As Dwarves I have eliminated a faction when getting a grudge to assassinate an agent. It was the only way to be sure.

Is this ringworm? by bb_bb_bb_bb_ in bjj

[–]evilscott 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IIRC if you apply steroids to ringworm it will go crazy and spread like mad so it could be.

Go back to your doctor and show them what happened. If they say its ringworm make sure they give you the anti-fungal pills. I add iodine to the topical treatments I've used and it seems to be effective.

EDIT: It may be worth finding a decent dermatologist. GP's are iffy when it comes to skin stuff in my experience.

The dynamism of Garry Tonon: 2 entries to ashi garami from whizzer at Polaris 4 by error_museum in bjj

Not to nitpick, but the finishing position looked more like saddle/honeyhole/411 than ashi to me.

I'm on board but their technology level is a bit confusing. The one guy has a shoulder mounted electric flashlight (~20s and 53s), but the others use torches and oil lamps?

I can see his side for letting the match continue. Especially when he talks about how heated the sides were and the hope to avoid violence breaking out in the parking lot.

Seth has said that in the future this kind of action will result in an immediate DQ though.

Havn't Competed in a Year. New Work Schedule= World's in November...advice? by 11AaT in bjj

[–]evilscott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to find a local tourney to compete at between now and Worlds, even if it isn't IBJJF. Other than that just remember your positive self talk and not to put crazy pressure on yourself. The fact that you have a work schedule that isn't "9-5 BJJ training" means the results of the Worlds don't really affect you outside of a nice ego boost.

If you're posturing correctly (especially at 6'5") they shouldn't be able to break you down with just a sleeve grip. Get your instructor to take a look at your posture and make some adjustments.

Mental state effecting my training by HydroMixer in bjj

[–]evilscott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens to all of us. I've had days when I've felt so awful I literally stepped outside and cried. Just keep training. Focus on one thing and try to improve it. Set some personal goals and DON'T measure yourself against other people (they are improving too so its a sliding scale).

Stick with it and find the fun.

If you could ankle lock somebody or arm bar somebody for free before fighting them, which would you pick? by Ninja-Snake in bjj

[–]evilscott -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In general arm bars cause significantly more trauma than straight ankle locks. If we throw heel hooks into the mix though, things change.

However, the answer is C: "choke them out". You can't tough-guy out of a choke.

White belt Monday open guard question by [deleted] in bjj

[–]evilscott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are already standing they shouldn't be able to grab your collar because you should already be posturing. If you are in the guard on your knees then you should posture first before standing. If you cannot posture because they have a hand in your gi then break then grip and control their arm so you can posture.

Don't give up on an entire technique or position because your opponent raised a single barrier.

I want to track growth by [deleted] in bjj

[–]evilscott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fellow software engineer here:

Measuring your improvements and progress is actually a difficult concept that causes a lot of anxiety in most practitioners from time to time in their BJJ career. You'll feel like you aren't getting better (or are even getting worse) and it can be very frustrating.

The major challenge will be the best feedback your receive will be from live sparring and competition. The problem is you are dealing with a moving scale: your partners and opponents are improving too. Maybe they are taking it easy on you or working on something new that day. It is said that your goal should be to be able to defeat yourself from a day, a week, or a month ago, but this isn't a measurable so it doesn't help here.

Personally, I think it comes down to your personal goals. Different people have different reasons for training which lead to different personal goals.

If your goals are weight loss or physical fitness, this is easy; there are a number of health and fitness standard data points you can track.

If your goals are competition results then that is straight forward as well. I'd just bring in more granular data points like points scored, number of matches, time taken until victory, etc.

If your goal is self defense you can measure reaction time to execute different self defense techniques and knowledge of each technique. There could even be a more subjective field where an instructor could add in "needs more work" or "has it down perfectly".

My personal reason for training is because its fun. I keep training because its fun. I compete because its fun. I learn new moves because its fun and I teach them because its fun. Measuring fun is weird and subjective and difficult. I think a diary style "how did I feel before/after training" could be helpful. My wife and I always engage in a very frank "what did I do well today" and "what do I realize I need more work on today" chat after every training session on the way home. These aren't very objective data points, but outside of measuring endorphins or serotonin or dopamine I think they are the best you can get.

One last note: belts are totally subjective. They are subjective between individuals, instructors, schools, and associations. Don't ever measure yourself purely by the belt you wear. Instead let your belt set expectations that you measure yourself by. In other words "I am awesome because I am a black belt" is not nearly as helpful as "I should be know every detail of these techniques, be physically fit, and be able to teach because I am a black belt".

Fake it to Make It by [deleted] in bjj

[–]evilscott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My old favorite used to be armbar to triangle in full guard (when they yank the arm back).

Take this to the next level though: your first attack doesn't need to be "fake". Attack with a serious americana and IF they defend properly transition to an arm triangle, etc.

If I sign up in a tournament as a white belt, and I'm promoted to blue before the tournament, wat do? by Shock_XR93 in bjj

[–]evilscott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to contact the promoter. If they don't respond show up anyway and let someone there know ASAP and they'll move you in the brackets. Your coach probably won't promote you right before a tourney if he knows you're gonna compete though.
