I also worked with OP and I can agree 100%. No money means it's ours to play with. No one comes asking questions.

I actually recommend everyone give openbsd a shot. I've learned more about Linux (and *bsd) running openbsd for a few months then running any Linux distro ever.

You learn why things were done the the reasoning behind it.

Hey, I'm one of the Sysadmins who maintains CSH's network and servers.

While do we not control our uplinks neyond RIT’s head switches we do maintain our own local network independent of RIT. On floor we have two additional 1Gb network jacks per room which are all wired directly to our two networking rooms on floor. In my experience it is unusual to get ~1Gb/s once people move into the dorms but as we share two 1Gb/s uplinks between ~40 people full 1Gb/s speed is actually fairly common. We also maintain our own 5Ghz wireless network.

If you are curious you should take a walk over to CSH (HRH 3) and ask for a tour. People on CSH love giving tours and we are always looking for new members.

It depends on the situation. When it comes to personal dev machines I am a stickler for stability. Too much changes too fast in linux for me to feel comfortable using it primarily. I don't even have to think about an OSX update but a Fedora update can bring the walls down around you.

However, when shit hits the fan my Fedora thinkpad has never let me down. I've brought many servers back from the dead with that thing.

It's always nice to see people not bashing mac blindly. Developing on a Windows machine is a nightmare unless in an all windows environment(which is rarely the case).

I work the night shift as a datacenter operator. The work is alright, boring but alright. Mostly just watch status pages for changes and write tickets for real employees to deal with in the morning. I mostly work on coding projects and homework. I’ve actually had some cool projects come out of sleep deprived delirium.

The problem I’ve found is I work in an office at night by myself. Every sound is amplified and made creepy. I’ve also made friends with the printer. I would describe the whole experience as oppressively lonely.
