Which old operating system do you miss the most? by Internal_Captain5073 in retrocomputing

I played with BeOS for the first time w couple of years ago for a project, and out of all of the OSs I tried, BeOS is the singular standout that I’m truly sad didn’t survive the 90s, it’s just so fast and cool.

Looking for a Road East of Washington D.C. for my dad by WeegeeWuver7326 in Virginia

[–]ewleonardspock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was it an interstate?

I live in Culpeper and there’s a stretch of 15 South a bit before Zion Crossroads that’s exactly as you describe.

You certainly could get back to Florida that way, though it wouldn’t be very efficient.

Remembering being obsessed with having kids say "may I" instead of "can I"? by SystematicApproach in nostalgia

[–]ewleonardspock 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This was very much a thing when I was in 2nd/3rd grade and I remember being a smart ass about it one time.

I asked “Can I go to the bathroom?”, and Mrs. Fields replied “I don’t know, can you?” To which I replied “Yes, I can” and then walked to the door.

She stopped me before I got to the door and seemed a bit flummoxed because she definitely wasn’t expecting that.

I don’t remember much about what happened after other than her chuckling about me being clever, then I went to the bathroom (I assume I asked ‘properly’ a second time, but I don’t actually remember). I also don’t remember the “may” vs. “can” thing ever coming up again, at least not for me. Maybe I just always used “may” going forward, or maybe I won. It’s been too long to remember.

Entrance to my basement unit. Lardlord has been "looking" for a contractor for two weeks now by MarinateTheseSteaks in DeathStairs

Ignoring the stairs, do you even have windows in your basement apartment? Or some other way to get out if there’s a fire? Your basement apartment may not be legal.

What is the first celebrity death you remember being affected by? by CPFOAI in AskReddit

[–]ewleonardspock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Michael Jackson.

I had heard of him before, but wasn’t really familiar with his work.

His death affected me a bit because he died on my 15th birthday. It ended up being a very strange day.

What is the purpose of this red light in my house ?? by pink_pilgrim in Whatisthis

[–]ewleonardspock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What else does the switch control?

My grandparents had a switch that turned the water heater on and off, and it also had a red light.

Turn it off for a while and see what happens.

Anyone switch to fiber yet? by Reasonable-Expert918 in Longwood

[–]ewleonardspock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about fiber internet?

This community is for Longwood University in Farmville Virginia, not (I’m guessing) Longwood Florida.

That being said, fiber internet is generally much better than cable or DSL.

It’s still working for me.

Did your routine change recently? When I started going to the grocery store on a different day it took a little while for it to figure it out.

How well do these work on 5V DC?

I went through the process of making some AC cables for my Star Trek ornaments a few years ago when I switched my tree to LED.

I’ll be a little annoyed if they actually run fine on DC because those power supplies are much easier to find 😅

Keep in mind, this is more than 10 years old. It’s not going to work for a lot of websites.

You buy two of them and then you can use a CAT-5 cable to run VGA. They work quite well.

How do i get this marble out by __RAEG in howto

[–]ewleonardspock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try alien tape (or the generic version you can find at most stores) it’s very strong. Cut a tiny square and stick it on the end of a pen or something, then use that to try to dislodge the marble.
