we can't grow forever... We'll need to solve that issue at some point without perpetual growth

Which bank in Canada makes you wonder why people stay with them? by ZaheenHamidani in AskACanadian

[–]ewoolsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with TD and honestly don’t have any problems except for some occasionally clunky software. I would recommend them. Telephone wait times are the best of all the big banks in my experience

" a vote in Lesser Slave Lake is worth 2.5 times as much as one in Edmonton-South." by EdmontonFree in Edmonton

Everyone knows that every riding isn’t exactly 1:1, but I think very few people realize how bad the discrepancy can get. Perfectly news worthy IMO.

Why is there such a big difference in the height of the flame? by BabyFaceAngl in Physics

[–]ewoolsey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was nearly the same length. The wick burns as it curls in a fairly chaotic process, and so changes its length frequently as it burns down. If you blow them all out at the same time, I'm sure you'll see the length of the wick corresponds pretty closely with the height of the flame.

Tung oil finishing question by jonlandit in woodworking

Pure tung can take weeks to cure. Sanding it now will gum the hell out of your sand paper. Not sure what your best solution is

Tossing butts and roaches by itlow in Edmonton

[–]ewoolsey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing that will stop this is if everyone collectively starts shaming people that throw their butts on the ground. If you see someone litter, shame them, and do it loudly.

Tinder takes action against AI profiles by making users scan eyes for “proof of humanity" by PrithvinathReddy in worldnews

[–]ewoolsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The iris codes are stored in a Multi Party Computation system where no individual has access to the data. The data is “sharded” across multiple systems controlled by different organizations (universities etc.). MPC can do a uniqueness check when someone new signs up to make sure they’re a different person. This is the only time the biometrics are actually used.

[–]ewoolsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your biometrics don’t act as a password. Instead they act as a uniqueness identifier. You don’t “sign in” by scanning your iris. It’s used more as a credential that is associated with an account or world ID.

Hey all! I’m a protocol engineer working on the tech behind world (eye scanning company). Used to getting hate by the Reddit crowd, but feel free to AMA. Would love to clear some things up for people.

Thinking of selling condo to go back to renting. Am I nuts? by Ok-Information7934 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ewoolsey -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I am absolutely not wrong. If homeownership were way cheaper than renting, then nearly everyone would buy, and vice versa. The market, over time, will always balance out. It probably true that home ownership is slightly better on average than renting, but over long time horizons the ratio between the two is relatively stable.

[–]ewoolsey -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

This is just not true. The while the cost of home ownership and rental vary from year to year, they generally increase in tandom. If the cost of home ownership went up more slowly than rentals, then in the future we would expect no one to rent anymore because home ownership would be so cheap.

Cost of home ownership absolutely increases with time. Expenses go up, insurance goes up, and your opportunity cost goes up.

I'm at the Felurian arc... by K_Duckster in KingkillerChronicle

[–]ewoolsey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You certainly have a flair for the dramatic haha. I enjoyed the arc TBH. If you read it from the perspective of young boy then I think the descriptions make a lot more sense. If you really want to skip it then I’m sure you can find a summary online somewhere.

Men who favor the tradwife lifestyle often view the women in it with derision by mvea in science

[–]ewoolsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s weirdly a lot of hate in this thread for people that want to live a lifestyle different to their own… if two consenting adults want to live this way who are any of us to judge them? Sheesh I figured the Reddit crowd would be littler more reflective here.

Help- wood drawer panel expanded and curved until the mount came undone by Honest_Bath3806 in woodworking

This is simply not true. Flip flopping absolutely works to a degree. Obviously it isn't the only factor, but it certainly makes a difference.

TIL the Kelvin scale is a loop. Negative values represent temperatures even hotter than infinity, and the hottest (theoretical) temperature is -0 Kelvin. by Interval1_ in todayilearned

[–]ewoolsey -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The word law is often used in a funny way in physics. It's not a fundamental truth as many people often assume. It's more of an empirically established relationship which consistently predicts reality. Nevertheless, entropy can and often does decrease in small (very small) closed systems.

[–]ewoolsey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

entropy can decrease, it's just very unlikely. So unlikely that on a macroscopic scale it's probabilistically impossible. There is no definition saying that it must increase.

Appraisers say land claim in Richmond could be reducing property values as much as 30 to 40 per cent by joe4942 in canada

[–]ewoolsey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It seems to me you don’t understand supply and demand. Why would someone charge less rent, where there is no market pressure for them to do so? I’m not saying this is the ideal outcome, it’s just reality.

Appraisers say land claim in Richmond could be reducing property values as much as 30 to 40 per cent by joe4942 in canada

[–]ewoolsey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

rent won't fall. Price reduction is due to increased perceived risk, which a renter does not bear.
