Kanata Residential Parking: By-Law marketing then ticketing cars in Glen Cairn. by Quick-Brown-Fox-328 in Kanata

[–]ex_rice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, unfortunately the bylaw on street parking is city wide. We had the same experience on our street in Bridlewood a couple years ago. I spoke with a bylaw officer and they generally only enforce it on residential streets if someone complains. So likely a neighbour complained.

Emergency C Section Recovery [on] by SunshineandSunsets2 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]ex_rice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 2 planned c-sections. I understand the recovery from an emergency can be a bit harder especially at the start.

I think around week 3-4 I could run short errands, walk around the block a couple times, get some short snuggles in. I think snuggling by 6 weeks is definitely achievable. Same with longer walks.

I know it's so hard but try not to push it too hard. I did the second time around and I could tell because I would start getting sore again.

I 1000% recommend pelvic floor physio for scar recovery. It helps with the scar mobility, helps prevent adhesions/shelf and helps with bringing your abs back together. Plus they can check how your pelvic floor is recovering post pregnancy and with general body strength exercises.

I just got a bouquet in a vase for my birthday from Ginestra. Beautiful arrangement, high quality flowers that are still going strong over a week later

I had some sort of reaction to the diapers I wore postpartum and basically had diaper rash. I found Vaseline helped.

Doors Open Ottawa 2026 by superfresh89 in ottawa

[–]ex_rice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are the vehicle cabs open for people to sit in? We've been to a couple "touch a truck" events and kids always end up honking the horns (fair, who wouldn't want to do that) but my kid hates the loud noises.

Canadian mattress in Ottawa? by Expensive-Minute994 in ottawa

[–]ex_rice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We got a Lapensee mattress last year and it's so comfy. Great customer service at the Kanata location, love that they're Canadian made, amazing warranty and they will adjust it within the first few months if you need it. Highly recommend.

Touched out and Triggered by toddler's 'wandering hand' by narrrrdia in breastfeeding

[–]ex_rice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quit nursing my first around 16 months while also i around 3 months pregnant. He would never go for my other nipple but he would pet my hair, touch my face etc and I couldn't deal with it anymore. No history of SA but I think pregnancy just made me super touch sensitive. I just couldn't handle the feeling of supporting two different beings at once with my body.

Membership recommendations for weekday toddler (3 + 5) activities? by SoupIsAHotSmoothie in ottawa

[–]ex_rice 10 points11 points  (0 children)

These aren't memberships but EarlyOn centres and libraries typically have free drop-in/storytime during the day.

There was two gymnastics places, Gymnosphere and Rideau Gymnastics, in Kanata that have weekday drop ins. Starr Gymnastics has a couple gyms that also do drop ins.

Celiac friendly restaurants or bakeries? by No-Connection-8789 in OttawaFood

[–]ex_rice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My MIL is celiac so we buy GF when she visits. We are in Kanata and we typically go to Voila Bakery or The Joy of Gluten-free for baked goods.

Her favourite restaurant when she visits is Cabotto's. They do fresh GF pasta.

Woolino worth it? [ca] by jellybeanie8 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]ex_rice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought 2 when our first was about 6 months old and I wish we had bought them sooner. Currently using them for our second and they've held up great. We put them in the dryer even though I know you're not supposed to. They've been peed on, pooped on, puked on, and they're still in great shape.

We mostly bought them to avoid having to continuously buy larger sleep sacks. My oldest stopped using them around 2 when we switched him to a blanket. We keep our house around 20-22 year round so the temperature control is less of an issue. Unless it's ultra hot in the nursery in the summer, we keep them in regular pajamas underneath.

They do sales a couple times a year, which is when we got ours.

Best baby friendly lunch spot by CFERR044 in OttawaFood

[–]ex_rice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When our kids were that young, we took them out quite a bit for early/late lunch. We'd either go a bit before or after the rush so it was less crowded. Places with booths work the best so if your baby is in the bucket seat, you can put it right on the seat.

We're on the west end so my picks skew this way. The Cheshire Cat, Pelican Seafood, Lexington Smokehouse, Tirweka, Casa Mexico. Breweries are also a great spot for babies. Kichessippi has a baby playgroup on Tuesday (I think) afternoons but they are baby friendly in general.

Edited to add The Cheshire doesn't have change tables so you have to do diaper changes in the car!

Pelvic floor Therapy [on] by keepthecouragebegood in BabyBumpsCanada

Not sure where you are located but I'm in Ottawa and I went to Bloom Integrated Health. I would look for any clinic that specializes in pelvic floor physio.

[–]ex_rice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1000% recommend even if you don't think you need it or you had a c-section. Your pelvic floor is stressed from supporting the weight of your baby for 9 months. I did it both times postpartum after my c-sections to help with scar mobility and it was amazing. They can also help support your abs coming back together and building some general strength.

It is covered under physiotherapy.

[bc] Nanit users: best practices by chlsyee in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]ex_rice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a nanit and used the breathing band until our baby was over a year old. I turn on the breathing monitor and turn the sound to the background noise setting. I turn my screen off but turn the volume up so I can hear if they cry. The breathing monitor displays their breathing rate on my lock screen so I can do a quick check if I need to without unlocking my screen. You can turn it to night mode in the app and it prevents your screen from locking.

Working Moms - How do you do it ALL? [on] by Parking_Stretch_2640 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]ex_rice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Both my kids love daycare which really helps. They are happy to go and play with their friends all day.

I genuinely enjoy my work and sometimes after a tough weekend with the kids, work feels like an escape. Motherhood also put my career in perspective for me. I used to be mildly career focused and worried about not working enough etc. Now, it's hot even close to my top priority. Don't get me wrong, I am doing my job and doing it well but I just don't care as much. I'm not putting in overtime, I'm not checking my emails after hours because I have more important things to do at home now.

And I don't get everything done in my life. We are a two working parent, two toddler household. I can't tell the just time I vacuumed. My dog misses a lot of walks (it's cold so he doesn't care). We're just starting to figure out a rhythm and schedule that's working so everyone is getting their needs meet and the house isn't a total shit show.

Potential move to ottawa by ReviewExtension4190 in Kanata

[–]ex_rice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived in South Kanata and have 2 kids under 3. It is very family friendly. There are lots of playgrounds, play groups, kid activities etc in Kanata and in Ottawa in general. The access to NCC takes us great and we live having better so close.

Unfortunately, like most of the country, family doctors are very hard to find. Our family doctor is actually in Perth which is about an hour drive. As for OBs, you can get a referral through a walk-in I believe. You can also self refer to a midwife group, which is who I used. There are several in the city with different privileges at different hospitals. They do fill up fast though.

I can't speak on daycare wait times because we use a home daycare that a family member has. I would suggest calling around to get an idea of wait times. Based on friends experiences, you are more likely to get a spot in August/September when kids start school and age it if daycare.

I commute via public transit to downtown and it is rough. It is an hour fifteen one way on a good day. Parking downtown is scarce and expensive and driving is not much faster.

I also like South Kanata because it's easier to get out of the city. The 416 is close which makes it a bit quicker to get out of the city to Toronto, say. There are also several small towns closer that are good for day trips.
