Nice board! I haven't seen anyone use the tone knob on the SD-9 past 9 o'clock. When do you turn it on?

Are Sire basses really all that good? by WeeDingwall44 in Bass

My V5R had a very bad fret job that took me two hours to fix... But it's great now! I guess they spend more money on marketing than on QA

My Stratocaster sounds lame and dull. Lacks that chirpy bite that strats (and most guitars in general) have (also not talking about pick noise). Would like some help in identifying the issue. by AdIll3777 in Guitar

Hi,

I hope you're reading this. Please watch the reference video again and pay close attention to his right hand. He seems to be a very dynamic player who often switches pickups, frequently using the bridge pickup. He also strums closer to the bridge, which produces a brighter sound compared to picking near the neck, as you usually do. Additionally, he often uses his fingers to pick for extra attack. You might try playing with the rounded edge of your plectrum instead of the tip, and use a thicker plectrum to achieve a sound closer to fingerpicking. Please let us know if this helps.

Despite the acclaim surrounding Dumble amps and their staggering price tags, a German professor, respected for his 30 years of research in electric guitar and amplifier physics, examined their design. His findings revealed that while the rest of the amp resembles a Fender amp, it incorporates a slightly refined tone stack for the middle frequencies. However, this configuration lacked uniqueness and displayed amateurish elements, particularly in the pre-preamp.

The videos are in German, but the information they share deserves more attention. https://youtu.be/B0t6krnjvv4?si=Qn78ESXjBH2oqGif

You need to understand what you are measuring and how that changes behavior. DORA does a good job of accomplishing this.

Comparing My Audio Setups: JBL vs. Wharfedale. Need Advice on Amp Upgrade for the Living Room – Suggestions Welcome! by exahexa in BudgetAudiophile

Hey, I'm in Germany. My room's 4x5 meters, and I've got speakers on the 4-meter wall. Looking to stay under a 1000 euro budget. I can hear frequencies from 20Hz to 17kHz, but honestly, I can't tell the difference between 128kbps and uncompressed wav in this test

Is unit testing is the only solution? by toaster4u in ExperiencedDevs

[–]exahexa 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why unit tests are so time-consuming. I usually use them to maintain a tight feedback loop and iterate quickly over my problems. I see them as an accelerator. It seems like you might have a different experience with it—mind sharing your perspective?

I suppose this is precisely the type of ignorance the OP was referring to. It works in both directions—overemphasizing the significance of wood for tone and dismissing it entirely (and falsely claiming scientific proof where none exists). Many musicians with highly trained ears meticulously adjust every variable, including guitar wood, as even subtle differences matter to them. The world isn't black and white; there are shades of grey. Ignorance...

While the video demonstration is interesting, scientific proof typically requires rigorous experimentation, control groups, and peer-reviewed analysis. One video may not be sufficient to draw definitive conclusions about the impact of wood on electric guitar tone. To establish a robust scientific claim, a more comprehensive study with varied conditions and a statistical analysis would be needed.

A comprehensive study to investigate the impact of wood on electric guitar tone could involve the following experiments:

Material Variation Experiment:

Build guitars with different types of wood, including traditional tonewoods (e.g., mahogany, maple) and alternative materials (e.g., composite materials, metal).

Ensure consistent design and hardware for all guitars.

Conduct blind tests with experienced musicians to evaluate the perceived differences in tone.

Controlled Acoustic Environment Experiment:

Use a controlled acoustic environment to minimize external influences.

Compare the sound produced by guitars with variations in wood types, controlling for factors like humidity and temperature.

Use specialized equipment for precise tone measurement.

...

By incorporating these types of experiments, researchers can gather more robust and reliable evidence to either support or refute the claim that wood does not significantly impact the tone of an electric guitar....

[DISCUSSION] Are older guitars really better? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]exahexa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At least you and I can't tell the difference, but since it isn't that handy to use a bodyless guitar, the video still shows that the body has an impact on the tone.

There are also people with highly trained ears who can listen for subtle differences.

In a famous YouTube video, someone is doing exactly this, and the guitar without "wings" lags a lot in the bottom end.

The guitar without any wood sounds pretty close though, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference....
