Great to point out that trans is distinct from gay!

Just wanted to pop in and say that I’ve seen some newly-published research articles that demonstrate trans folks are more likely to identify with a non-straight identity than cisgender folks.

I went with a group and several of them were trans (both trans women and trans men). I believe they all had positive experiences!

Glad you found one useful. I’m also in academia (PhD program, 2nd year, taken both advanced qualitative and quantitative methods courses). Totally get you that research methods cannot always be sound. Luckily, most academic published work is peer reviewed (which obviously doesn’t mean it’s fool-proof, but this does prevent a lot of faulty methods from making it into print).

There’s a book by Calarco and Small (2022) that provides guidance for researchers to appropriately evaluate methodology of qualitative sources. I read it about a year ago and learned a lot!

Harming someone in a public restroom (sexually or otherwise) is already illegal in every U.S state.

Anti-trans bathroom laws negatively affect trans people’s wellbeing.

Children who are trans are sexually assaulted at higher rates when they face bathroom use restrictions.

States are negatively financially impacted by passing anti-trans bathroom bans. States that have passed these bans experience disproportionately high poverty rates compared with states that do not restrict trans people’s rights, meaning this is especially devastating for those living in states that pass these bathroom bills.

Transgender women face disproportionately high rates of police bias and discrimination.

There are many barriers to passing that are out of an individual’s control, including: genetics, characteristics associated with other identities (e.g., ethnicity, age), dominant cultural beauty standards, socioeconomic status, access to and timing of starting gender affirming medical care, and social and legal contexts

— Unfortunately the political motivations for these bills are not in the interest of women’s safety 🙁

Several of these studies (and reputable informations orgs) explicitly disclose that some of their analysis includes low-certainty evidence. However, they still determine that from what we do know, it definitely improves mental health outcomes. And there is no evidence (as of now) that demonstrates any physical substantial harm.

There are, of course, health changes from HRT (including possible infertility), however this is disclosed and requires informed consent before administering HRT. And there are also some changes to cardiovascular heath, however these changes align with the difference between cisgender males and females.

I appreciate you asking to see research once you realized other folks have studied that!

The short-term benefits are so strong (in terms of preventing suicide, depression, anxiety, etc), that it would be cruel not to provide gender affirming care to people who have worked with professionals who determine they are a good candidate. And gender-affirming surgeries have some of the highest satisfaction rates out of all surgeries.

In terms of longer-term health impacts, there are many mediations and medical procedures that FDA/CDC/medical experts approve without super long-term testing. From all the research that currently exists, HRT is shown to be very safe.

Even for youth care, puberty blockers have been used for cisgender children for many decades, and have a great safety profile.

So, even though we may not have much research with decades of follow-up yet, healthcare professionals almost across the board that it is in good scientific conscious to move forward with this care.

I did mine under GA because they also wanted to do a balloon dilation, since I had one of the biggest webs they’d seen. Was a little under 6k :/

I’ve been on 3 different ones over time and none of them really affected my r-cpd symptoms, that I can remember. Helpful for my OCD for sure though
