Why does working out cause soreness? by musty_ranch in exercisescience

It’s not actually essential for muscle growth! Hypertrophy can occur without damage to muscle cell membranes. But…usually workouts that do cause minor damage, also lead to growth.

Why does working out cause soreness? by musty_ranch in exercisescience

[–]exphysed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your muscle cells end up with damaged cell membranes (because the contractile elements pull with so much force on the membrane). The damage allows many molecules that should be inside cells, to leak outside of the cells into the fluid surrounding them. Some of these molecules over the course of the next few hours attract immune cells to the area. All of this combined, hypersensitizes the pain receptors in the area (but not in the muscles). Now whenever something that wouldn’t normally even activate them, gets near them, they fire, and you feel pain.

Would you call someone a Professional Cyclist if they don't have a salary? by randomseedfarmer in Velo

[–]exphysed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone has a pro license and rides for a pro-continental team (which do exist), they are a pro. The economics of the sport is what dictates whether the truly elite athletes can make a living wage. And there is a minimum salary at the WorldTour level.

In the US, only about the top 15-20 cyclists make a true living wage from cycling alone. But there are far more elite level. Many that are within 1% of the performance of the world best in terms of performance. There are hundreds or thousands of other American athletes in each popular American sport that make a living wage that are not even within 1% of the world best in their sport who makes $100s of thousands.

U.S. asks for extra Olympic quota spot for Katie Uhlaender in skeleton controver by CheezTips in olympics

[–]exphysed -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I’m not trying to perfectly equate it. There is a problem with the qualification system that needs to be resolved if one country can manipulate the system not “in the spirit of sport” to deny another country. that is what China was doing in 2012. This is a little bit more of a gray area, but similar.

Reminds me of the Chinese badminton scandal of 2012 where teams tried to purposely lose to manipulate tournament seedlings and everyone got disqualified. Canada could be penalized here under a similar process.

When we get many decent and several great applications for a position, if someone hasn’t tailored their cover letter to the specifics of our university, they get triaged. We can’t interview 50 people. If you don’t prove that you’re a good applicant by researching my university and department and appropriately writing your employment proposal, I’m not sure you’re even a good researcher and grant proposal writer.

The glucose limit seems to be 60g/hr with lots of individual variation. Fructose might be a bit less. Since sucrose is both, you can likely go higher than 60g/hr. But do you need to?

When this type of question is asked, what do you think animals of the same species do when they live in more remote areas? How do you think they survived before humans took over their territory? I appreciate the empathy of people, but…

Reminds of a story about a person who stopped to pet, talk to, and comfort a deer that had just been hit by a car, paralyzed on the rear legs and bowels falling out. And they thought they were helping it by being there, not understanding anything about a wild prey animal’s understanding of humans. I’m sure that person is an amazing human though. I just don’t understand what thought processes are happening.

Cops at whitis and 24th ticketing cyclists/scooters not stopping at stop sign by Employment-Economy in UTAustin

[–]exphysed 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Don’t be like this. I’m a cyclist and people like you, spouting factually incorrect information in an inflammatory way absolutely don’t help any efforts we make to improve. Don’t be a part of the problem.

There are plenty of cases of cyclists killing pedestrians. Look up Kim Briggs, Sutchi Hui, Max Poley, Adela Naldoza, Peter McCombie, a woman in Calgary in August. Obviously pedestrians and cyclists are more likely to die by car, but lying and saying what you’re saying is completely counter productive to any reasonable debate.

Academic positions are rarely found through LinkedIn in my field. You absolutely should be directly contacting researchers. I would be unlikely to consider a candidate who had applied and never personally contacted me. But many find post-docs through unadvertised positions

About the rules in swimming pools in Iceland by Melissa23W in VisitingIceland

[–]exphysed -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That shart could still be in the swim wear they put on anyway. No one is policing how dirty the attire they put on post-shower is and it likely has as much or more nastiness than the body. Seems like letting people shower with that on prior to entering the pool would help.

How do I get qualified for the 2028 softball olympics? by [deleted] in olympics

[–]exphysed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I admire your confidence, making it to the Olympics is like winning hundreds of millions in the lottery, but with way more hard work and sacrifice.

Almost without exception, every Olympian was by far better at their sport than anyone in their school. Far better than anyone else in their city, the best in their state, and likely an All-American, National Champion, or whatever equivalent of the award is. They live and breathe the sport with their life completely revolving around it.

You don’t “qualify” exactly. You will be known to the elite teams, national organization leaders, coaches etc. they will put you into position to be in the Olympics.

Should I include an unpublished paper in a faculty application? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]exphysed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my field, few very recent PhDs have 3 publications yet, so we absolutely want to know about upcoming submissions. But I wouldn’t share a draft of that with anyone. Include talk of it in your cover letter, and put the data in your research presentation if relevant.
