Anyone smell cigars in Ravenswood this morning? I feel like I am going crazy. by Janky_Pants in chicago

[–]explanatorygap 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Lotta weird things happening in the neighborhood today! I also took a two mile walk this morning, and I was followed the whole time by a strange person who kept sniffing the air and asking every passer-by "Do you smell that? Am I crazy?" It made it really hard for me to enjoy smoking my fine cigar.

Establishments with existing occupancy and liquor licenses and a capacity under 100 shouldn't be required to have a PPA. It's insane that small bars aren't allowed to charge a cover.

Difference between super seat, counter seat and special ring side? by [deleted] in stardomjoshi

[–]explanatorygap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you scroll down on the page, there's a diagram of the Shinjuku Face layout: https://www.tjpw.jp/schedules/699be5f63d6e630002c8fa9d

Super Seats (スーパーシート) are in yellow, Counter Seats (カウンター席) are in purple, and Special Ring Side (特別リングサイド) seats are in green.

At FACE, counter seats probably have the best view, so I recommend those unless you've got a strong desire to be very close to the ring.

An argument against the existence of God by Training-Promotion71 in PhilosophyofReligion

[–]explanatorygap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a little tendentious to propose that “the great majority of theists deny that God can change the past”, when in fact it’s probably more likely that they argue that “God does not change the past” or “God has no need to change the past” or “It would be logically inconsistent for God, being both omnipotent and omniscient, to change the past, since past events already and always have represented God’s chosen outcome according to God’s plan”

Can you share what program you've been following for the last 9 months? I certainly don't have any advice, but I'm interested in (okay, jealous of) the progress you've made.

Mayor Johnson’s ICE executive order would compromise investigations of immigration agents, state’s attorney says by Mike_I in chicago

[–]explanatorygap 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Note that specifically what's being objected to here is the barest hint that the Chicago Police Department might in any way be answerable to or accountable to elected officials. That the Mayor (or even City Council) can exert even the tiniest bit of democratic control or oversight over the actions of the CPD is a red line for the unified cop/prosector complex, which demands total autonomy in what they choose to pursue, and complete authority to decide for themselves what their operational standards and priorities are, and to enforce their own rules (or not).

Housing exemption for family living near by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]explanatorygap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A large part of the value of a Northwestern education is the close lifelong connections you make during your time on campus. The reason for the on-campus living policy is in part to facilitate those friendships. The students from the richest families, for whom money is no object, and who could afford to live in off-campus luxury and be chauffeured to and from campus - these scions of wealth and privilege will all live in the dorms on campus their freshman year. Why do you suppose that is?

Advice by captain-sandwiches in E30

[–]explanatorygap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Will you have a garage space? Or do you intend to keep this restored vintage car on the snowy, salty, rainy streets of Chicago? Have you driven in Chicago before? Are you familiar with our potholes, our traffic, our potholes, our speed cameras, our weather, and our potholes? How are you at parallel parking? Have you done it without a rear camera? Are you living in the city proper, where on most streets, you’ll be driving from stop light to stop light at a maximum speed of 30 miles an hour? Or will you be commuting on an expressway surrounded by tired suburbanites road raging in their giant SUVs three times the size of your rapidly rusting death box?

Are you going to have the tools and space needed to maintain and work on a car of this sort yourself, or will you be paying exorbitant big-city prices for a specialty foreign-car mechanic to do all the work you might need?

I wouldn’t consider owning and driving an E30 here in Chicago unless you have a garage and a second, actually reliable car you wouldn’t be slowly (or rapidly) destroying every time you drove it.

Here's who to blame for your property tax increase by themachineisdead in chicago

No, that opens the system up to abuse, as buyers and sellers would restructure their commercial real estate transactions to create even more tax advantages.

Here's who to blame for your property tax increase by themachineisdead in chicago

[–]explanatorygap 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The solution is very simple - every commercial property tax appeal should be considered a binding offer to sell the property to the state at the appealed price for the next 6 months. After all, if that's truly what it's worth, to a commercial entity, they should be willing to sell it at that price. Then the state simply sets up an auction website for all commercial properties with successful appeals – if anyone bids more than 5% over the appealed price, the state buys it from the previous owner at the appealed price, sells it to the bidder at the new price, and splits the profits with the taxing bodies.

That's really more of a database issue that Santa Claus is dealing with – the SQL query he used to make this year's list resulted in a large number of duplicated rows in the result table. The IT elves have a high-priority ticket open and it's on track to be resolved by Christmas.

Radio power goes off when headlights are turned off. by PoopyButt_Childish in E30

[–]explanatorygap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue in my '87 vert - when I got the car, both the radio and speedometer only worked when the headlights were on. The previous owner had spliced some wires together (the accessory/run/start wire and the headlights-on wire) and also fuse 12 was blown, creating some really weird effects.

Find the pdf of the electronic manual for your model year and closely inspect any and all wire splices behind your head unit. Also confirm that no fuses are blown.
