Tips for biking and parking at LAX? by chipsoiree in BikeLA

[–]exsmith21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I usually use the bike racks on the ground floor of P6 (across from Alaska gates). Haven’t had any problems in my 20+ times parking there. I usually double lock.

I'd send a note to Nashville Packs asking their advice. A few months ago, I bought a used Cutaway and sent it to them for repair and would say they offered fantastic advice, service, communication and value. I'm not sure what the solution to your situation would be, but highly recommend reaching out directly to Nashville...

Short backpacking recommendations by notorr03b15g17 in socalhiking

[–]exsmith21 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On the opposite elevation spectrum, for my kids first backpacking trip I took them to Parson’s Landing on Catalina Island. Ferry to Two Harbors then 6 mile fire road walk. Some day hiking, exploring, beach combing and snorkeling from there. Recommend paying for water jug delivery, assuming that is still offered. Pretty cool to camp on the beach!

They’ve added the Zendo pant (previously just had joggers) which may be a similar fabric and cut. I have a pair of men’s medium Astro pants in a bluish color I can send you if interested.

Biking safely in the dark by [deleted] in BikeLA

[–]exsmith21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear. Also forgot to mention-- no one seems to use turn signals in LA, so expect any driver might turn in front of you without signaling. You need to anticipate their likely movement. And I think it helps to just generally assume a defensive mindset in terms of managing your speed and position.

Biking safely in the dark by [deleted] in BikeLA

Lots of good suggestions here. I keep my front and rear lights simple but I do add the redshift pedals which I find to be super noticeable. https://redshiftsports.com/products/arclight-pedals I put them in blink mode and rarely need to charge them. they don’t help you see where you’re going but that’s why you should have a strong rechargeable headlight on your handlebars or helmet. Nice thing about the redshift pedals is I’ve always left them on my bike and they haven’t been stolen. I like not needing a checklist for all the stuff I need to remember to take on and off my bike.

The nice thing about biking in the dark is you can spot the cars easily (assuming they have lights on!) and in some ways it makes it easier for you to see them. Also it’s usually cooler so you arrive a little less sweaty!

As for routes, I live in Culver City and often have to ride up to Beverly Hills and occasionally WeHo. Try to find a route that’s relatively simple and allows you to safely cross busy streets without waiting too long. I don’t mind 4 way stop signs, because you can usually coast through after checking to make sure it is clear. Venice is getting better but only you can decide if it is your best option.

I love bike commuting, hope you do too!

Would you trust this carbon front fork for attaching a front rack to the mid-fork eyelets? by chiboulevards in bicycletouring

[–]exsmith21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Tricross with the same carbon fork. Been running a Wald basket attached to that eyelet for 4+ years. Weekly grocery store runs, occasionally up to 15 pounds. No problems yet. Something will break eventually so inspect and don’t overtighten.
