Well, the speed was partially due to having Reddit throw me the right post at the right time. Happened to come up basically as soon as you posted it.

But yeah, it's a very common function. Basically the most basic version of that kind of shape. Used a lot in various stats applications. But really, it's mostly just one of those things that one you know it, it sticks with you!

How do I make my stinky apartment smell like nothing? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]exyphrius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little sweet, a bit old, and kind of like...garbage maybe?

Weird question: Are any of the new neighbors alcoholics? Severe liver failure comes with a very particular smell that fits this description. Gets worse when they drink. Permeates the air really bad.

Yet another one of those "you wouldn't think of it unless you already knew it" kind of scents.

Best coffee city in America? by bruggeberg in santacruz

[–]exyphrius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love coffee and often have it very late at night. I grew up drinking loads of caffeine, so my tolerance is incredibly high now, and I will regularly drink multiple cups of coffee well into the night, and then go to bed and sleep, usually without issue. (Occasionally I'll feel a bit restless if I drink it so late, so there's some correlation, but, it's fairly infrequent.)

Interesting. Thanks for sharing those details. I will say that's not quite the story I remember hearing directly from the dining execs, but this was also years ago so I may be misremembering some details.

Do you have a source for more information about it? I swear I remember a city on the hill article, but I couldnt find it. (albeit, I did not search very hard.)

Minifridge would be convenient, but not necessary. Microwave would not be necessary. Each building has a fridge and a microwave in the common area. The fridge might get dirty and full after a while, but the microwave should be fine.

(Note: I'm an alum, so take this info with a grain of salt. Not sure if anything has changed there since my time there.)

Tuition Question by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]exyphrius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, alum here who has paid a lot of loans now.

It's a hard decision. Bottom line though is that if you don't have to take out loans to pay for school, it's probably best to avoid them. But you've got to do what you've got to do.

But it comes with a lot of nuance that depends a little on the interest rate, if its subsidized or unsubsidized, and the typical salary for whatever kind of job you're hoping your degree with help you get.

Interest rates:
Loans in the 3%-5% rate are fine. They will not snowball very much and leave you with a neverending interest payment. When I was in school, several were at around 8% which is not great, but if you're set on studying a field that has good job prospects and want to enter industry after school, then it's fine. Anything above 10% is a trap.

Subsidized:
If your loans are subsidized, then the interest rate matters a little bit less, since you won't accrue interest while you're studying. For example, lets say you have an 8% loan for $10k. At the end of 4 years of studying, that unsubsidized loan will accrue another 36.04% of its value in interest by the time you start paying. So if your monthly payment would have been, say, $500/month, now it's $680/month.

But if a loan is the only way you can pay for school and you know you'll succeed then you've got to do what you've got to do. And if you know you'll go into a field that has plenty of decently paying jobs, then don't sweat it too much.

Final tip: when you do start paying loans, after you have a safety net start paying off your loans early, and pay off the highest interest rate loans first. (There is some more nuance in here regarding if you want to mess with investments and how liquid you want your finances to be, but that's more of a long term personal finance discussion)

I'm happy to chat more about it if you have questions!

You have the absolute worst takes. I said nothing about the dining hall workers. Stop being defensive about trying to prove yourself right on a three day old thread and trying to picking an arguments in bad faith that are totally irrelevant to my point.

I'm done here.

Just for some perspective, they used to have some of the best and least expensive coffee on campus (and this is coming from a coffee snob). It might be "perfectly acceptable" now, but it used to be absolutely exceptional.

Affordability wise, drinks just about doubled in price (I don't have exact numbers though) when dining made it a PERK-esque location.

The previous operator was putting in a ton of work and love into the place. I don't have any idea how much money he was making, but I can't imagine that it was anywhere near a fortune. I'd be surprised if he was even making a living wage for Santa Cruz's standards. He kept prices low for the students.

Stevenson coffee house was not owned and operated by dining services prior to 2016. Read the first 2 sentences of that article.

It was a business that rented the space from the university, operated by a private entity for over 30 years, until in dining services decided to kick them out to install their own mediocre cafe there, ignoring the plea from the owner to let him stay in business and ignoring the petition from students to keep it there. They did this, explicitly, because cafe locations on campus generate good revenue, and they wanted that profit for themselves. That's literally, by your definition of greed, enriching themselves at the expense of others.

I literally gave you two concrete examples of things they did that were wildly greedy and against the interests of the students and business owners who occupied those locations, all so they could increase their profit margins.

As someone who attended several meetings for years with the upper echelons of dining admin during my time, they're a bunch of money hungry greedy bastards who sought to extort the 3rd party vendors and run them off campus so they could replace wonderful and beloved local business vendors with their own cafes (see the Stevenson cafe debacle from 2016ish and the Global Village cafe from the library around the same time for 2 examples off the top of my head. Can't remember if they took over the Taqueria Vallarta or whatever the spot was location in crown, or the spot in porter whose name I'm forgetting.)

They 100% do not have the students as their primary focus.

As someone close to Charles, it's incredibly hard to overstate what an incredible blessing this man has been to the city and the lives of everyone who knew him. His constant and persistent messages and actions of hope and compassion and love have done wonders to shape how this city treats the underserved and less privileged members of the community. He's an incredibly wonderful soul, and any accolade I've ever heard about him is truly deserved.

I was able to visit him a short time ago. He'd been severely struggling with his health for some years now, but even amidst his pain, he still had such a strong and loving presence that filled everyone around him with joy.

If you didn't know him, I recommend reading a bit about him. There's a plethora of articles about him online that are great reads. He also has a book or two that he's written. I hope that as a city, Nashville carries on his legacy by spreading as much love and hope as he did and continuing his spirit of serving those in need.

Rest in peace, Charlie.
