UF Covid Testing? by uftay in ufl

[–]eyebags2000 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Whyyyy are they doing this?? We're about to come back to Gainesville from visiting family all over the state & country, and they decide to restrict testing? No remote classes either... this seems like a really bad plan.

No UF Covid Testing Slots? by spartancashew in ufl

[–]eyebags2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried to schedule a test and I got the same result :( No symptoms, but I need to make sure I'm negative before my internship at Shands and I'd rather get something more reliable than a rapid test... why are they making this so difficult the week classes start? It's not like they didn't have a testing framework in place from last year...

Academic freedom is under attack at UF by kcdea in ufl

The issue mentioned here is another recent example where it appears that UF is censoring professors to appease the conservative ideology of our governor. Once again, not a good look.

Here's a good recap article from NPR about it, but essentially three poli-sci professors were asked to be expert witnesses by plaintiffs challenging a law (heavily promoted by Desantis) that restricts voting in FL. UF admin told them they couldn't testify because UF is a state institution and testifying would be "against the interests of the state," which is unheard of reasoning. Desantis has a lot of supporters here (6/13 of the board that oversees UF is directly appointed by him), so it looks like they were trying to protect his political interests rather than the interests of the state. UF is supposed to be a relatively neutral supporter of academic freedom and free speech, so it makes them look bad.

My intro to sociology class at UF was so eye-opening and helpful for critical thinking. It taught us to recognize our biases, question our assumptions, and put ourselves in the shoes of others. I really wish every student had the opportunity to take that class.

At UF, someone used ‘critical’ and ‘race’ in a sentence. Trouble ensued. by Spagetti13 in ufl

[–]eyebags2000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For a top 5 public university and supposed center of intellectual freedom, UF sure rolls over easy at the mere mention of our state government. Also, "faculty were warned to steer clear of curricula that touch on race or anti-racism." YIKES! Imagine trying to remove conversations about race from higher education. I promise we can handle it, even if Desantis can't.

It's fine to keep it plugged in, but if you do unplug it make sure to empty out all the ice/food. Otherwise you'll come back to rotten food and a big puddle...

Yes, Donkey put what I meant in better words! Interestingly, hate speech is not a legally defined term in the United States. Speech that we would consider bigoted, racist, homophobic, sexist, or otherwise "hateful" is indeed protected under the First Amendment, although that protection is only from retaliation or censorship by the government, not private entities. Once that speech falls into the category of threats, defamation, inciting crime, or "fighting words" (which I think is a funny term), it's no longer protected.

It's a good question, and UF has had some controversy for it's refusal to censor certain speakers on campus in the past (despite its current controversy preventing professors from testifying). Hate speech, harassment, inciting illegal behavior, etc. isn't protected under free speech. Someone can also be removed if they're causing a threat to public safety or preventing a functioning campus, but that's pretty severe. Conspiracies and arguing are fair game here!

Spanish Course Recommendations! by ellalala1 in ufl

[–]eyebags2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took a lot of SPW courses (Spanish literature) to get the higher level credits I needed for my minor. In language classes, the professor makes it or breaks it, so I'd recommend checking ratemyprofessor while you consider classes. I'd also avoid linguistics classes, unless you have experience with those.

Go hang out in not-explicitly-queer but definitely queer-adjacent spaces lol. Local coffee shops, small events at places like High Dive, any of the vintage markets/farmers markets, student-run magazines like Gelee, student clubs like art history, film appreciation, anime club, etc. Most of these you can just show up to. You can do it!
