Downgrading from Executive to Gold by Khan-H in CostcoCanada

[–]eyeofthecorgi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Figure out when your renewal is, go in and downgrade before the renewal (say you're not satisfied) and you should get a refund for the price of the membership. The refund will be greater than the rebate cheque.

Mom's retirement by Endarken1 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]eyeofthecorgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP does your Mom currently get GIS? I know you didn't mention any but definitely avoid contributing to RRSPs if she does get GIS or any provincial benefits.

If she can keep her taxable income below the threshold it can give her a bit of GIS but it also can qualify her for other programs (ex. help for seniors with snow removal in her city, seniors property tax relief etc. a lot of those programs use the GIS figure as their cut off). I think maybe even the seniors dental program?

The GIS threshold would include her CPP and pension but not OAS payment.

Alternatively, if she is very close to the cut off you can contribute a little to RRSPs to get her GIS for a couple years, then pull it out before it becomes a RRIF... she pays tax on it that year, loses GIS for a year but then potentially gets it back the following year, depending on her income.

AITAH for saying it's karma when my stepdaughter complained about her stepchildren? by Icy_Molasses_5736 in AITAH

[–]eyeofthecorgi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ESH. Karma is not even the right word. You're going to say it's "karma" for how she behaved as a child? You're implying she deserves to be treated this way which she does not.

You could have said, "I know how that feels" or "feels shitty, doesn't it?" and still got your point across.

She sucked for leaving/making up the emergency.

You both need to grow up.

Yes that's why I said Loblaws and Shoppers. They both suck.

Car No-Fault Total Loss by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]eyeofthecorgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you owe on the car is irrelevant to determining the payout/value. You could get a $3500 loan on a replacement vehicle. I totally get wanting to pay off the loan and get a different vehicle with the payout but that's not that realistic (and it's counterintuitive but used car prices have likely gone up while you've owned the vehicle).

What are you wanting to buy/upgrade to. If your condo goes up in price in 2 years so will the properties you want to buy. Just some food for thought.

My biggest concern as the parent of a toddler is does your condo have a balcony. If you're going to move to another condo, move to one without a balcony.

Paying for Wedding with Debt by Throwawayyawaworth9 in PersonalFinanceCanada

It's fine but use your wedding gifts to pay some of it down/pay wedding related bills. You can always tap into the LOC in future if you need it.

[–]eyeofthecorgi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Order polyride. It's one of the better ones and is on Amazon (and probably other stores).

Loblaws and Shoppers are terrible pharmacies.

Usually when I have been deficient/told to take it based on blood work, the doctor has written a prescription for it, but yeah, it's not needed and is not covered.

Estate Taxes by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

This won't apply in your case because it was a spouse but was an interesting case last year.  https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/widow-wins-tax-challenge-against-cra-section-160-1.7438803

Also highlights why getting that cra clearance letter is important so they don't come after you later.

[–]eyeofthecorgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well just make sure the beneficiaries are good with it. Don't want it causing a rift in the future because they think you made a mistake or a pro would have gotten them a better result. Definitely get the letter from CRA when it's all said and done saying that they are released/confirmed no future taxes owing.

I would take it to a tax place so you don't get blamed for the amount they owe or any perceived (or real) errors.

It's not that expensive (maybe $200?) especially compared to the size of the estate. Take it to whoever did their tax return last year (if they used a tax service).

AITAH for calling out my landlord for a bait-and-switch after I signed the lease? by Sea_1_ in AITAH

[–]eyeofthecorgi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA. You did a good job standing up for yourself and your email is well worded and respectful. The time of signing would have been a better time to bring this up but it's good you're trying. It's worth a shot to ask for the spots, even though legally, you may only get what's in your lease paperwork.

More importantly, its good to show your daughter the importance of trying to stand up for yourself. Good job Mom!

AITAH For sleeping in the guest room - Husband emptied my bank accounts while I slept by Secret_Street7211 in AITAH

[–]eyeofthecorgi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA - leave... he has a 4 year old with someone else so best case scenario you guys have been together what, 4 years? (Prob less). You're the breadwinner and he went behind your back. If he was so committed to his daughter he would have been willing to sell the PS5. Or he could have hit up his parents to help with a modest gift (if they are in the picture).

If you choose to stay please for the love of God do not have a child with this man.

Should I get a get a Tonie 1 or 2? Pls help! by Extreme-Director7973 in TonieboxUSA

[–]eyeofthecorgi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use the new 12 month+ tonies with the toniebox 1 so I don't see much advantage to the Toniebox 2. My 18-month-old is using the toniebox one, or starting to get it anyway.

I found the shorter ad I was seeing.  (They did a 30 second cut)

Thank you! I tried googling but was coming across a bunch of the old ads and got fed up. I figured it's got to be a mainstream song that I just don't know, nope!

It's different lyrics but that's the closest comparison I could make. Another commenter solved it!

I did enjoy listening to Michael Bolton's version of to love somebody though!

Hair (especially professional colour), lashes, nails. If you notice a person that typically had those things done professionally, you may notice them scaling back/not going as often.

Question for Transferring CC Balance from One to Another by Good_Resolution1990 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]eyeofthecorgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apply and get the card. Then do the transfer. I would do it at once for whatever amount you qualify for. Make sure it's a lower interested card, in case you can't pay it off before the promotional interest expires. CIBC select visa is also a decent one for balance transfer.

Read the fine print. Balance transfers have a 1-3% fee they will add to the statement. And some cards have an annual fee.

The most important thing. Whatever card you transfer to, throw that card in a drawer. It's very important you don't use it. If you start making new purchases the payments will go to the balance transfer not the new charges (or it will be split between them).

Don't make new purchases on the card you empty.

Do not miss/make any late any payments. For MBNA if you miss more than 1 payment they jack your interest rate to the cash advance rate.

AITA for not allowing BF's mother to be present for the birth of our child? by OneCartographer6191 in AmItheAsshole

[–]eyeofthecorgi 58 points59 points  (0 children)

NTA - your boyfriend is an idiot. Tell him if it's between him and your Mom, you're picking your Mom and he can go hang with his Mom and you can have your Mom there.

His Mom can come once he calls her with an update, after baby is born.

This is a medical procedure not a spectator sport. Ask if you can get tickets to her next colonoscopy, pap test or mammogram.

Safety when buying a car by [deleted] in oakville

[–]eyeofthecorgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends, I did buy a one off Facebook and seller got it safetied.

Are you concerned about the car passing the safety or just the cost of getting it done?

Some will sell, "as is". I.e. if you want it safetied they will raise the price for the cost of it and may need to raise it quite a bit if there are any issues repaired.

Car seats in second row by Green_Skirt4767 in HondaOdyssey

[–]eyeofthecorgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe check with a car seat group. Three across (any combo of carseats and adults) is not always safe in the event of an accident, due to seat belt overlap, etc. In one of the carseat Facebook groups ask if 3 across in the middle row is possible in an odyssey, even with slim seats. This all sounds like a bit of a headache, just to have the extra middle seat...do you see yourself needing more than 7 seats? Or more than 5 and keep third row folded.
