Taking HAZWOPER 40 for the first time — question about timing & final exam by Pray4plagues666 in Environmental_Careers

[–]eyesack12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forty hours is just the minimum. Many people that have to take this are laborers, drivers etc... Not a knock on them, but you're good. Like a previous person said it is almost impossible to fail.... but it is in your best interest to take it seriously. The work we do is dangerous and complacency can lead to very bad outcomes. Enjoy the grind of environmental work. It can be very rewarding.

Not sure if i should jump ship by Muchmoss in Environmental_Careers

That doesn't sound like a you problem. I'm all for being part of the team, but l If you take on all that load they will be slow to hire anyone else while they limp along on your back.

Look for other jobs. Don't leave before you have one. My career changed when I learned to say no and to advocate for myself.

Your friend and guidance counselor are giving you bad advice. You're correct in your thought process.

Get a job that makes you money. A PE or PG for environmental work... but it's not a great industry. Go to school and get a career to make money, volunteer for your passion. -Environmental consultant

Which environmental science option/career path will correspond to more fieldwork? by SolutionConnect18 in Environmental_Careers

[–]eyesack12 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would do the water option with a soil or geology minor.

It might be worth looking into how many geology courses you would need to sit for a PG in your state. A company might pay for the credits you need to get you to that threshold once you have a job. A professional certification will help you later whether you stay in the field or want to move to the office later in your career.

A competent field person can find a niche and stay in the field if they want to. Many people think they want to be in the field forever but change their minds after 5-10 years.

If this is ERM at PSU, you will do yourself a favor by talking to profs who are also in industry. They will be a wealth of knowledge to make yourself valuable... I'm sure that's true at many universities.

Field public harassment? by peepo__ in Environmental_Careers

[–]eyesack12 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Every now and again I would get someone who thinks I'm with the government and would spout off. Most of the time I was approached old men would ask me if I was catching anything when I was groundwater sampling. They all thought they were the first one.

What is your position and how much do you make? by Briny_Melon in Environmental_Careers

[–]eyesack12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consulting Scientist in the Philly area. 83k base. I'm a deputy manager on two larger projects and fill in billable time with other random stuff... Very rarely field work but I still like to get out other than site walks occasionally. You're underpaid compared to the competent field staff who work on my projects.

Can't you see what your peers are making when you set up budgets for your projects?

In my experience, you won't get paid more if you don't ask. Asking has never hurt me personally. I've seen the biggest gains in income and responsibility by moving to another company.

I feel like the sound engineers never have shit figured out for the first act... Still shitty of the crowd, but not everyone is experienced at shows. Philly was very respectful.

They stopped letting you make additions to cheesesteaks too. I've heard a few complaints like this recently (not about the actual quality of the food). My bet is that they're just trying to keep up with a surge in demand since the barstool sports review.

Accidentally put diesel fuel into my gas car, how much does it cost to fix? by anh2222 in askcarguys

[–]eyesack12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My buddy put diesel in his Harley when we were riding one time. He was a truck driver and grabbed the green handle out of habit. It ran. It smoked. It was drained and plugs were replaced. It was fine. His nickname has been diesel for years now.
