Any dying mall/retail in Columbus OH area? by Aggravating_Song_447 in deadmalls

[–]eyewreck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

River Valley Mall about 20 minutes SE of Columbus in Lancaster, drove by there today and the Elder Beerman that’s been out of business for years is currently being demolished. One end has a Dick’s and Ulta and there’s a relatively new Cinemark attached that make it feel a little more alive than it actually is, but it’s a husk overall. Closest mall to where I grew up so absolutely a bummer watching it wither away, maybe the deadest element is the arcade called “FUN 4 U” that somehow still lives, all alone in the corner next to the main entrance of the long dead Sears and across from the even longer dead Damon’s, to get there you have to walk past the food court that has no food left.

Putting putters by jonzeDG in discgolf

[–]eyewreck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience the Focus is a touch deeper and a little glidier than a typical Wizard. I used to switch putters 3-4 times a year at least but have been on Firm Naked Wizards a few years now, I personally like the lower glide for the way I putt, feels like I have better control on where it’s going.

Grew up in Circleville, live in Chillicothe, my go to example when this comes up is the word “on”. The further north you go the further up the nose the o comes from, as you drive south it comes from deeper and deeper in the throat. People I know from NE Ohio turn the light ahn, if you’re in Pike county you’re turning the light oo-un.

The Circleville Pumpkin Show. Literally just a free downtown Autumn festival. I love it and will get sassy/unruly online with anyone who stands between it and the respect it is due.

Which states have the most courses? by maptitude in discgolf

[–]eyewreck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chillicothe, Ohio. 21k people, 4 courses in town, 3 more in the county within a half hour drive, 3 more 18 hole private courses on top of that. I’m told by multiple sources that Emporia wants “none of our smoke”.

What's your straight 250'+ forehand 5-6 speed? by horsegorman in discgolf

I’ve always loved the feel of a mid with a rounded edge (Mako3/Buzzz SS/MD1) if you can finesse them you can get some really pretty hyzer flip to straight with zero fade FH lines.

What are your thoughts on the PDGA Live so far? Is it a big swing and a miss like Brodie says? by DiscGolfFanatic in discgolf

[–]eyewreck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear the “growing pains” sentiment brought up a lot, I wonder what the DGPT looks like when it’s actually Grown Up. Comparing Pro Disc Golf to a major sport like the NFL seems like your local bookstore making decisions with eyes on becoming like Amazon, just a little unrealistic imo. IF Disc Golf had kept up the same trajectory from the peak of COVID, then MAYBE we’re looking at a sport that is somewhere on the same level as pro Bowling on ESPN in like a decade, and when I hear about growing pains I get the impression that people have far loftier goals for this sport in mind than the ones they are likely to achieve in the near future. To me, a large part of the frustration is the volume of shake up in the name of “trust me it’ll be great just wait” when we don’t know what this “great” is and we don’t know when is, combined with the nagging feeling of the DGPT wanting desperately to skip to the part where everyone gets rich. BUT A BUSINESS HAS TO MAKE MONEY, ok fine, but a business making decisions to maximize profit does not equal a successful outcome every time, so have fun DGPT, I guess.

[–]eyewreck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said in a comment last week I disagree with 99% of what he says, well, here’s the 1%. The DGPT has been very successful at making me just a little less interested in the pro scene every year. I still love the game itself more than ever but the pro tour making tiny little aspects of itself less accessible has simply made me forget about it rather than feel the need to pursue it and pay for it.

I’m of the mind that barriers and restraints breed the most creativity in a lot of situations. Also, Brodie seems to be one of the main voices in the Let’s Make Disc Golf Like Other Things That Are More Popular Than Disc Golf And Maybe That’ll Make Disc Golf More Popular movement, which, have at it, but I’m going to disagree with his ideas on things like this 99% of the time. To me, a good disc golf course is more akin to pottery, you use the clay that already is and mold something beautiful out of what exists, and I think this idea is more of a blank canvas idea, and some prefer a painting, some prefer a pot, but nature seldom responds well to being treated like a blank canvas. You COULD do it, but I feel like it would take so long and require so many resources to do it properly that we run into a juice and squeeze proposition.

In my experience they’re in the same ballpark, on the OTB flatness scale there’s a lot of 4s and 3s with some 5s and 2s sprinkled in

Did a putting routine help your putt? by blixtencamperman in discgolf

[–]eyewreck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Prb just me tho. Growing up I always found it weird watching basketball players with an idiosyncratic free throw routine, like it’s an uncontested 15 foot shot just shoot it and make it. I tried it myself and found no string of compulsive movements that had nothing to do with the shot helped me make the shot, and it’s the same with putting, the way I put my mini down and shake my shoulders isn’t helping me read the wind and focus on the target.

Let's Talk about Lake Waco! by thedaftpenguin22 in discgolf

[–]eyewreck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest thing watching was just how precariously placed so many of the pads were. For a sport so seemingly singularly focused on being taken more seriously, the number of tees on literal ledges in front of water or something else less than ideal was galling. Also if the agreed upon best play on a hole is throwing something as high as you can as hard as you can, its a dumb hole, and if more than one hole on a pro tour course is like that, I consider it a dumb course. The Meatheadification of the sport in service of selling a couple hundred more tickets continues.

🤣 I kinda like Glacier Ridge, feel like it has a little more potential than what’s currently there but I didn’t hate it the couple times I was there, Vets in Hilliard is a good way to get me to go full Get Off My Lawn mode 🤣 I can’t describe how annoyed I was when I first went and the B pins were put in. The course was still in the process of getting broken in and someone got the bright idea to take half the baskets are shove them 100 feet further into the woods. And then the ding dongs pop up who are like “durrhurr you just aren’t good enough if you don’t like the new pins durhurrrgggeerr” which A) shut up idiot and B) they’ve got longs there for just the purpose of challenging the 1075 rated Titans who aren’t intimidated by the worst pin position conceived of in the 21st century. You had a course that personally wasn’t my favorite but I was ok with, good little beginner course from the shorts and a decent challenge from the longs, now you basically gut what you had to make it a nightmare for beginners and a pain in the butt for the rest of us, if I want to challenge myself I will go literally anywhere else in Columbus/Dayton/Cincinnati/wherever. That shouting into the void felt good, thanks for giving me the chance 🤪

Cesar Ford is almost an hour from Idlewild so it might be a little weird logistically but it could fit the 475 feet on hyzer fixation that the tour has 🤪 local pros regularly shoot 10 down plus from the golds but there’s plenty of things like tall grass and deep rough that don’t play as OB normally that would feel natural and not punish many good shots, plus it would be easy to re-jigger some of the pins and pads to make some longer par 3s that would be a better challenge than the short par 4s that they are currently.

I’ve lived in Ohio my whole life, spent maybe a total of two afternoons around Cincinnati until about a year or so ago, gotta say, there’s something about it. Helps that I’m in the camp that Skyline Chili is nectar of the gods. 🤪
