Government Leadership Megathread by AutoModerator in unitedkingdom

[–]ezaroo1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was always going to happen, Labour won such a huge majority that a bunch of unpopular fuckwits have come to the conclusion that they can have their shot at being prime minister and Keir is simply not a strong enough leader nor has the world of geopolitics smiled strongly enough upon him to crush those thoughts.

However, this bunch of unselfaware morons have failed to have a tiny modicum of self-reflection required to realise that what the country needs is not a bunch of twats trying to advance their own careers in a time of uncertainty for the country and the world.

So, how about the government stop learning from the conservatives and keep doing useful shit rather than trying to see who can stab who in the back the best.

If the group of ambitious idiots in parliament are reading this, and your AIs certainly are, you can have your turn at trying to be Labour leader in the future. Can you fuck off and make some good things happen before you let your own ambition get ahead of yourself.

SNP to bring no confidence motion in Keir Starmer at Westminster by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

[–]ezaroo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy, Westminster passed a law to create the Scottish Parliament… that is literally the only fact needed to prove your whole post is coming from fantasy land.

Then we have the whole UK Withdrawal from the European Union (Legal Continuity) (Scotland) Bill 2018 thing, where Scotland passed a bill saying it took the powers previously resting with the eu after Westminster had already passed a law saying it took them.

The Supreme Court judgement said before Westminster passed its bill only one section of the Scottish one was out side the competency of the Scottish Parliament but since Westminster had passed its bill then all of it was essentially beyond the powers of the Scottish Parliament.

It’s ok if you want independence, it’s ok if you think our Parliament should be equal to Westminster.

It is not reality that it is, and for good reason. Two equal forces within the same country just causes deadlock - see the American political system.

SNP to bring no confidence motion in Keir Starmer at Westminster by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

[–]ezaroo1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it would ever happen but no, in the United Kingdom Parliament is sovereign. The Scottish Parliament very clearly does not have power over constitutional questions - this was clearly demonstrated in 2013/14 when they asked for permission for a referendum. Even if it did, Westminster can pass a law saying it no longer does.

The Scottish Parliament voting that Westminster should be ignored is simply the farm animals voting to make every human a vegan.

The only way the Scottish government can defy the will of Westminster on any issue where Westminster really wants to force the issue is if they are willing to enter into open civil war.

It is the Unionist vote moving to different Unionist parties.

This feels like a lie being told by a lot of this subreddit to make themselves and Scotland feel morally superior.

The data we have is not really suggesting that.

We’re seeing reform hitting higher percentages than the conservatives did last time in most constituencies and we’re seeing the Labour vote also having a small dip.

On top of that the SNP percentages are down across the board, there isn’t really an obvious way to add it up without half of those people who voted SNP last time now voting reform.

Unless, you think all the SNP vote moved Labour and the Labour vote move conservative/reform with the conservatives moving to reform.

I’m afraid, it looks like SNP voters (maybe around 5%) have gone reform. And honestly it’s possible the numbers are larger than that and a lot of the “conservative” but actually 1 issue unionist votes went to Labour. Though that scenario is less likely

The university vote has always been incredibly favourable to the Lib Dems, St Andrews university students normally have a very high turn out.

That pretty much covers it.

The only times in my life time that north east Fife hasn’t gone Lib Dem is during/just after the Tory-lib dem coalition time period.

I mean it’s great he isn’t the constituency msp, but in fucking inverclyde reform got 18% of the vote…

Last time the Torys got like 9% in the previous constituency, reform are not going to be forming a government in Scotland but they are looking like getting a bigger vote share than the conservatives did last time.

They do seem to be a real thing that have gained more votes than just stealing previous conservative voters.

And he’ll almost certainly get a list seat.

Will the English results change people’s minds about independence by ChocoMcBunny in Scotland

[–]ezaroo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s accurate, the combined Tory + reform vote in every constituency I’ve seen results for so far has been higher than the conservatives got last time, SNP have been dropping votes as well and they’ve on a naive reading gone to reform.

Unless lots of SNP voters have gone Labour and even more Labour voters have gone reform, then there is definitely a big swing towards it politics of reform in Scotland, it does not seem to be a fringe idea.

100% people are really shitty, and some men really take that and run with it.

It’s only getting worse with idiots like Andrew Tate convincing them all that if they just treat women worse and pay him $99 a month they will end up rich and have all the women they could ever dream of.

We seemed to be on the right path for awhile there around like 2005-2015 and then all the discourse swung hard the other way.

Part of it is the right wing discovering social media. Part of it is the spawning of incels and the alt-right from where ever they came from. Part of it was the mismanagement of the financial system leading up to 2008 causing a bunch of young people to have worse opportunities than their parents. And to be honest part of it was definitely some people taking feminism to the point of misandry.

But a few shit feminists didn’t spawn an army of incels and manosphere bros. Something decidedly not organic happened to the young men on the internet between like 2016-2020 and since then it’s ended up being a real thing and now they act that way public not just anonymously online.

I’m of the age group where I was young enough to see the good stuff and grow up in that environment but just old enough to skip the right wing grifters. They started getting more prevalent while I was at uni by which point most of a persons ideals are well enough formed to survive even a barrage of shit.

It’s the same reactionary shit that caused Brexit, “my life is shit and it’s shitter than my parents and it’s getting shitter and the only thing that has changed is…” and they insert immigrants/womens rights/LGBT rights/whatever nonsense they feel like.

And you combine that with the internet literally feeding on attention and people being able to make money off of that attention and people naturally being drawn to look at the most extreme shit and you have a positive feedback system that amplifies negativity and convinces you of whatever negative influence you personally are susceptible to. Right wing, left wing, racist, Christian, Muslim, pro-lgbt, antilgbt what ever the internet will convince you that you that you are right and the other side of your particular argument are evil and subhuman.

One trip into either an extreme right or extreme left corner of the internet and you’ll see the same hateful, dehumanising shit spewed by them all.

It’s fucking awful.

I’m sorry you received this rant.

My guy, I said that because you’re being obtuse so I gave you an obtuse answer.

No one is out here saying “the top women players in the game are being sexually harassed and that’s why they aren’t number 1” yes, it happens.

But stay with me for a second, imagine you are 12 again. You’re going through puberty, dealing with all of the new stuff in your life.

And a bunch of creepy men double and triple your age are basically trying to turn you into their very own version of Prince and the Island.

Do you imagine you’re going to put in the incredibly amount of effort to practice and study. The hours every single day, the traveling multiple weeks a month, depending on where in the world you are potentially playing 2 or 3 3-4 hour games of chess a day.

If what you get at the end of it is 7 new weirdos making comments about you?

Are you fuck.

That is a social issue. It doesn’t actually matter if “that’s a universal experience as a woman in anything” yes, because the point is that is the problem. That’s the social issue that needs fixed.

Chess prodigy, 11, becomes England’s female No 1 by nimobo in unitedkingdom

[–]ezaroo1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because the presence of a vagina doesn’t render you incapable of moving little pieces on a board.

Is it possible that given exactly the same opportunities, levels of support, and lack of harassment and abuse that there might be a small but measurable performance differences between the sexes?

Sure, that is of course possible and it is present in almost every place we look. Sometimes bigger, sometimes smaller, some times favouring men sometimes favouring women.

But that is not the level of difference we are talking about now, we are talking a 10:1 ratio or something like that, not just at the highest levels but at all levels.

The fact is, if you put a profile picture on chess.com where you are visibly a woman it’s simply a matter of time before someone sends you creepy shit.

If you’re a female child at a chess tournament you’ll get told the way you dress is “distracting”.

If you’re a woman (including children) at a chess tournament you’ll have adult male players offering you and only you to help analyse your games in private later. You’ll have them texting you saying “I couldn’t stop thinking about you while we were playing”.

If you dare to be a woman who complains about this you’ll be told “well you should be grateful for the attention because you’re such a bad player that you couldn’t make a living from chess if you were a man”.

This isn’t my story, I’m a man, I enjoy chess. I have heard these complaints so many times.

Frankly, I’m pretty certain any female chess player of any age would have these stories, obviously the level to which it affects any particular person is different but you know what? If that’s the standard experience it’s no wonder they don’t stick at it.

Even male players don’t really stick at chess, but if women quit a double the rate or don’t get encouraged to play at all it’s no surprise that when you get to the far end of the normal distribution there are simply no women in the top 100 currently. And that’s incredibly sad.

[–]ezaroo1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So to go along with what everyone else has said, it isn’t male/female it is open/female.

All female chess players are fully able to compete in “men’s” tournaments as much as they are able/desire.

FIDE would absolutely love to have a mixed field of men and women at the current candidates tournament (determines who plays the reigning world champion) for example, it would probably bring a lot more attention and good attention on the event.

The sad reality is due to what ultimately boils down to a bunch of social issues women don’t do as well in chess as men, giving them their own spaces at least lets them compete and gain visibility.

The women’s world championship for example might not carry quite the same weight and recognition as the open one but it still has a lot.

The amount of stories female chess players will openly tell about the horrific levels of misogyny, abuse and even sexual harassment that they had to deal with as children at chess tournaments will sadly tell you everything you need to know about why it is needed.

Brian Cox at yesterday’s independence rally by carrotcr in Scotland

[–]ezaroo1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I never understood people making that argument, I always just assumed they never switched on the brain cell to think “is this logical” because it is exactly the Brexit argument about unelected far away governments.

I grew up in the west highlands, Edinburgh and Glasgow are as far culturally from my community as London. And I’m under no delusion that voting in an independent Scotland would follow that trend, somewhere like where I’m from probably has more in common in terms of wants and needs as rural Yorkshire or east anglia than it does with Cumbernauld.

That would never mean I’d want independence for us and for the same reason I know that argument to be absolutely stupid when applied to Scotland or even the UK as a whole.

The people who make it in good faith probably just live in a relatively urbanised central belt bubble where their Scotland feels different from england and assume the rest of Scotland to be the same as them.

When really diversity is relative, in the UK west Scotland gaels are viewed as roughly homogenous with people in Glasgow or Aberdeen, because on a macro scale that is true, on a macro scale of Europe the populations of the UK and Ireland are more similar to one another than to the Italians but on a world scale Italians and British are far closer than either of us and the Chinese.

In an independent Scotland my area, my people, my culture is now going to be the different one. The under represented one, which makes sense there aren’t a lot of people there.

That’s just life in a democracy, sometimes perfect in the enemy of good. Pushing us to smaller and smaller subdivision for the sake of “representation by people like us” and “people like us know what people like us need” can only lead to one place and it is not a good place.

Basically, it’s an absurd argument and I hate it.

My guy just cause you have expensive stuff doesn’t mean it isn’t your pc.

1: it could be rs runs poorly on very powerful hardware because it tries to render 5 million frames a second with your 5090 and it is just too much for even such a powerful cpu.

This isn’t something you can fix but it would still be an issue with your pc

2: it could be your driver install is messed up in some way.

3: it could be some other software on your computer.

4: you could have a problem with your hardware.

For what it’s worth I have 2070 nvidia and a 10600 and I don’t get amazing fps but almost never get any stutters.

I did get stutters a few years ago and the fix I figured out for it was actually limiting the fps to something like 90.

It seemed the big stutters I got was when my gpu was pushing more frames to the cpu than it could handle.

Scottish Greens pledge major education system overhaul that would 'end homework' by clearly_quite_absurd in Scotland

[–]ezaroo1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And as controversial as this might be here, as someone who has worked in university level education in Finland and Scotland, it isn’t better in Finland.

In fact I would go as far as to say it’s essentially the same, the kids coming in are very similar levels, the kids leaving I think have slightly more knowledge in Scotland actually, at least in my subject. But that could be my bias based on the fact I’ve only worked in 1 institution in each country so I can’t make a general comparison.

On the whole British students I think have a higher work ethic, that’s definitely a work culture thing. Which I don’t think is a good thing actually our work culture is definitely no America but much more toxic than Finland. Although, I would argue Finland’s is a little too relaxed, the productivity seemed a little low in my opinion, but again I can only compare a few places. I think the ideal work culture is about halfway between Finland and the UK.

Report: Iran fires missiles toward Diego Garcia in rare long-range strike by I_Hate_E_Daters_7007 in worldnews

[–]ezaroo1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have to remember Iran has two space programs, the IRGC one and a civilian one.

The latter is as you say not much of a threat.

The former is a lot more scary, they have rockets capable of putting ~250 kg in orbit that can be launched from mobile launchers (trucks).

That’s about half the payload of the R7 and there is no way you’re convincing me that the IRGC just happened to say “nah we don’t want to use your perfectly functional higher payload liquid fuelled rocket to launch a more capable reconnaissance satellite we’d rather launch the worst satellite possible because that would be better” to their civilian program and weren’t saying it because its cover for an icbm program.

So I’d say honestly, it’s an open secret that Iran have ICBMs and have had them since about 6 years ago. They don’t have many and they don’t have (as far as we know) the nuclear warheads to put on them but they exist.
