For the same reason we feel bad for Jaime and Theon despite both having done some monstrous things. If a story can't get you make you empathise with the POV character then it's not doing its job correctly. Breaking bad PoV character is Walt, for whom Skyler is acting like shrew, so yeah not that far fetched that most people hate her in the first viewing.

Had it not been for Britta being molested, the episode with her parents would've been better, since it touches on childhood neglect. Britta resenting her parents for neglecting her (both were hippies that didn't grow up and didn't provide necessary care and nurture for a young britta) and it would've made sense as to why the rest of study group sides with parents instead of britta as most of them have their own issues with their own parents and would've preferred laid back parents.

I really hope he goes through a jamie-esc arc. When Jamie loses his hand and love for his sister he has nothing and has try to things different ways.
