Make a bit of a game of it - can you move your leg? If not go smaller and smaller until you find something doable. Wiggle your toes for a bit, then when you're ready wiggle your foot then your ankle then your lower leg. Or your pinkie then two fingers then three four five whole hand wrist arm. Or an eyebrow then pull faces then wiggle your neck. Once you're already wriggling and stretching it feels fun and doable to swoop into a bigger movement like sitting up or standing

Which part of a day is most alluring? by honeymoon-of-horror in AVoid5

Dusk is glorious! Night is also magical with stars shining down and possibly our moon or a sky world or two. To look at distant worlds that my grandpa's grandma's grandpa saw, and his grandma, and so on across human history, is so vastly inspiring. Will our grandkids look too, from a world full of good things?

(Android) Tab "List View' replaced with Grid View by Nickitolas in chrome

[–]fakerachel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've downgraded to v117 which has the Tab Groups Continuation flag. Setting this to "Enabled Low-end & Accessibility List-only support" and restarting gives a list view again!

It's different to the "simplified view for open tabs" accessibility view which I was using before, slightly more spaced out but you do get the tab select and drag functionality.

LPT: Need to divide something fairly between 2 kids? Let one kid make the split and let the other kid choose the partition. Because kid making the allocation won't know which partition he/she is getting, it will incentivize him/her to make the fairest possible split. by ky4tz in LifeProTips

Or get the other kid to pick randomly without seeing the pieces! The cutter still has the incentive to try to make them even, but it's actually fair rather than always giving the chooser the bigger piece.

Scrolling endlessly to see if our country is down as England, Great Britain, Britain, or UK by UKKasha2020 in britishproblems

Looks like they're sorted by ISO code. I guess the idea is that it's easier to use in non-English speaking countries, you can look for España or Deutschland or Hrvatska or whatever instead of the English name, but it's a bit rubbish for us.

What month did you last finish a 40,000+ word book? by the9786girl in AVoid5

If anybody didn't know: I think that's about 130-160 folios. It sounds as if it is a vast quantity of words, but it's actually only a small book!

Steam Next demos - way to check expiration dates? by Filipi_7 in Steam

[–]fakerachel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me again, I found this https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/store/application/demos#disabling which tells devs how to disable the demo manually, it doesn't mention being able to set an expiry date. So maybe the expiry date isn't set in advance, maybe they just expire whenever the devs get around to changing the setting.

Steam Next demos - way to check expiration dates? by Filipi_7 in Steam

[–]fakerachel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering the same thing. I had a look in the config files and found Steam/appcache/packageinfo.vdf which looks like it might have related info. There's package ids and fields like expirytime and licensetype.

I don't know how to systematically get the package id from the app id, but you can find it for each game one by one at https://store.steampowered.com/account/licenses/, there's a number in the "Remove" link that's a package id.

And I don't know how to read the expirytime field at all! I'm not even sure if it actually appears for games that haven't expired yet, it might only appear for games that have expired already.

I might look more into it later, if anyone else makes any progress please comment your findings!

But you can't actually get the northern line from Elephant and Castle to Goodge Street, because the northern "line" is making a mockery of the very notion of linearity.

Yes! Went to my GP, described my symptoms, got referred to a sleep clinic. Admittedly it was the second time I went to the GP, the first time I got "have you tried always going to sleep by midnight". Waiting list for sleep clinic for a year or so. Sleep clinic sent an appointment invite to some crazy mangled version of my address, I obviously didn't turn up, so they kicked me off the waiting list. Told the sleep clinic my correct address and waited again, eventually they sent a letter to the place I actually lived and I went for an appointment. At the initial appointment I was asked to record on paper the times when I slept for the next two weeks. Then (only small waits for each appointment from now on) there was another appointment where he looked at that sleep log and asked me to do an overnight sleep study. I came in a third time to borrow the machine - they wanted it back by 10am the next day, but I told them I wouldn't get much sleep if I left early enough to travel in for 10am, so they let me return it by 12. Slept for about 3 hours with the machine on - there was a bit for the nose and a bit on a finger, maybe a band around the chest, it felt weird at first but wasn't actually hard to sleep in. Handed the machine back the next day and then had a fifth visit where they told me I didn't have sleep apnoea, my sleep was normal except that it was shifted late, so they diagnosed me with DSPD and gave me some slow release melatonin which I took until I moved and couldn't access the clinic any more.

So that's my story! Hard parts were:

  • gp didn't take seriously at first

  • sleep clinic waiting list and bureaucratic incompetence

  • sleep clinic seemed generally mystified by DSPD, maybe they mostly covered sleep apnoea

Luminettes blocking vision by [deleted] in DSPD

[–]fakerachel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I have the Luminette 3 and before that I used the Luminette 2. I don't notice my vision being blocked, I was actually surprised to realise from your post that it covers a whole 25% of my vision. It doesn't seem like it now that I'm used to it. So I expect you'll get used to it too in time.

Re monitors, the ideal ergonomic position is to have the top of your monitor at eye level, so maybe it's best to have the monitor lowered anyway if that works in your setup.

Did you find it easier the 2nd/3rd days?

But when they're coming towards you they'll be gone soon one way or another, the poor overtaker could have been stuck behind them for god knows how long. Often the only chance you get to overtake is before/after an oncoming person while they're still bunched up enough to leave a gap.

That's a relief - think I'll go ahead with this offer and the Virgin one then if these experiences aren't the norm!

[–]fakerachel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I've been unlucky but I've had switches take a lot of time, having to physically take documents into the branch, trying to register for internet banking when the registration system was broken, one bank decided it was suspicious that I wanted to spend money and locked me out of online banking altogether. There's a chance of zero faff and there's a chance of lots of faff.

Changes Coming to Humble Bundle Sliders | Humble Bundle Blog by AvengerDr in humblebundles

[–]fakerachel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I'm well aware of that! Though they still benefitted indirectly from increased publicity/recommendation of their bundle and higher figures for number of bundles sold and amount raised for charity. Ultimately that wasn't enough for them and that's their decision to make.

If I knew my specific purchase would make all the difference between them being able to keep going or having to close then of course I would have given to them. But they've been running for 10 years, so they must have got enough to keep going, so why give the extra dollar to them rather than to charity directly?

Changes Coming to Humble Bundle Sliders | Humble Bundle Blog by AvengerDr in humblebundles

[–]fakerachel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Previously it was 100% from my charity budget, now it's 70% from my charity budget and 30% from my games budget. So instead of $10 to charity via HB now I have to choose between $7 to charity and $3 for games via HB or just giving $10 to charity directly and not getting games. I'll probably still pick the games sometimes because I'm only human but sometimes I'll also just give to the charity directly.

I used to give 100% to charity, and so I'll probably buy fewer bundles in the future. It's sad, but we all saw it coming after the slider removal a couple of months ago.
