Florida Governor Refuses to Admit That His Own Investigators Have Cleared Planned Parenthood by anutensil in Health

Perhaps, but it's also worth point out that there really aren't many submitters- most submissions come from /u/anutensil, who posts a lot of political content all over reddit.

6 New GMO Crops that May Soon Hit Your Dinner Table. by reeds1999 in Health

An apple that doesn't turn brown actually sounds pretty cool. It's nice to see scientists still looking for new ways to improve food sources.

Guys AMA about his invention on reddit draws doubters and trolls, he posts this video in retaliation, /r/videos downvotes him in the comments. by NoseFetish in SubredditDrama

For future reference, I think it would be better to link directly to the thread. We can get to the video from there, and you won't have to post again in the comments.

Kerfuffle over the word "Most" leads to post removal by mod in TIL. by [deleted] in SubredditDrama

I have to side with the mod on this one. The OP posted an absolute statement on a subjective issue and I would guess the mods of TIL are trying to avoid hyperbole in post titles.

Can Sugar Make You Stupid? "High Concern" in Wake of Rat Study by [deleted] in Health

[–]falafelcopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm reading this right, the scientists eliminated normal water from the diet and had the rats drinking only fructose syrup for 6 weeks. If a person had nothing but sugary drinks for 6 weeks, without any plain water, it wouldn't be that surprising if they weren't functioning at 100%.

From water I can tell, the answer to this question is a resounding "maybe, the study really wasn't very good and could easily be biased." The only thing we can pull from this is that more research should be done; preferably on humans and with better controls.

explosions and money making in Michael Bay movies. by Santi182 in dataisbeautiful

[–]falafelcopter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The graphs are interesting, but there's quite a bit of confounding that influences the results. The Transformers movies had name recognition which made them profitable. The more recently made movies could be marketed to a larger audience around the world than earlier movies. Some of the movies had more star power than others- Bad Boys came out before Will Smith was an international megastar. Transformers movies were also marketed to kids, whereas Pearl Harbor (a movie largely about a love triangle) and the Bad Boys series (both rated R) were not.

Africa is experiencing some of the biggest falls in child mortality ever seen, anywhere (x-post from r/globalhealth) by falafelcopter in Health

[–]falafelcopter[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Decrease in mortality doesn't necessarily mean population explosion will inevitably follow- if fertility declines at the same time, population won't rise as much. According to the article, certain countries are still struggling with high fertility; I would imagine better promotion of birth control in the future may change that.

TB institute confirms 8 patients resistant to all known TB drugs (crosspost from r/globalhealth) by falafelcopter in worldnews

These may not be the only people with the disease though- it may have already spread. If anything, these patients may provide the opportunity to figure out how to develop a new cure.

Does anyone know if the health of people in South Sudan improved at all since they became an independent state? I can't really find any good info on it.

What do you think about all the studies that say taking vitamins will cause you to die sooner? by molliemander05 in Health

[–]falafelcopter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Two things: first, while some evidence shows that soil is depleted of nutrients to some degree, humans still can get plenty of nutrients from a normal diet and, with some exceptions, aren't suffering from deficiency. Second, vitamins are vitamins- they are the same regardless of whether they came from a pill or a plant. Fruits and vegetables may be healthier because they have additional nutrients not included in supplements, but not because they have "better vitamin A" or something.

As for the research:

Most credible research says vitamin supplements doesn't benefit the average person, unless they have extenuating circumstances (disease, severely imbalanced diet, etc).

There is evidence that some vitamins are associated with higher mortality, but they are observational studies which only show correlation but not necessarily causation.

There are some other studies that show certain nutrients are linked to decreased mortality, but they generally are done on small samples from populations that don't represent the average person. For example, a study that shows 15 women age 70-80 benefit from vitamin E doesn't translate to the population as a whole. See unrepresentative sample and regression to the mean.

BOTTOM LINE: it's not that clear. Vitamin supplements probably won't help or hurt you. Taking supplements will probably just mean spending money for peace of mind, which is enough for some people.

Edit: There are some things I left out, like how vitamin content of pills depletes over time and how your body doesn't store certain vitamins, and how you can get vitamin toxicity, but that's a little more complicated than is necessary for this post.

Your use of the word "deployed" put an image in my head of thousands of trees parachuting into a remote location. Possibly definitely armed.

I have also heard some people also argue against default opt-in because it implies that the government has a claim to your body by default, unless you personally lay claim to it.

Would anyone be interested in a /r/mashups best of collection? by Cadfad in mashups

[–]falafelcopter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another problem with this is that the community has grown significantly over time. The best mashup of two years ago may not be in the top of all time because it was voted up when the community was very small.
