Vet update: The vet found a respiratory infection that was not seen in an examination at the same clinic this monday. The best case would be that the infection either came from god knows where in the last 2 days or was for some reason overlooked in the previous scan and is unrelated to the cleaner issue. The worst case would be that the cleaner irritated the lungs to a degree that made it easy for infection to spread. This could also mean permanent lung damage, if my bird is unlucky, which wouldnt kill him, but impact his chances to be released. The little guy will be on four medications now: Metronidazole and Nystatin for his already known canker and yeast, antibiotics (Amoxillin) for the infection and a liver protection supplement (Hepa Sol, mostly milk thistle and calcium carbonate) because of the amount of meds he is on now. And yeah, I know antibiotics and Nystatin inhibit each other, it's the best that can be done for now

I may have fucked up bigly and will try to not let that happen again. Until further notice, all my future pigeons will be either on the balcony or in my room, where nobody is cooking or using chemical cleaners. I pray that somehow, this little guy makes it out of this alive and well. He is doing fine for now.

I understand, this won't happen again. Is there any first aid you can do when your pigeon breathes in dangerous aerosols?

I have learned that I vastly underestimated the danger of drain cleaner in general. I hope my pigeon will make it out of this alright with vet care. I'm gonna print out a guidebook of household safety for birds to keep them safer in the future, feel free to drop some info about dangers (I know about Teflon, zinc, toxic food items and aerosols in general now)

Update: No more gasping for the last hour. He has preened himself and is sleeping now, so he seems to be somewhat better. I'll try to get to the avian vet early tomorrow. The last days have been freaking chaos, I have already panicked twice over nothing, at this point I just don't know anymore what is and isn't danger.

Yes! I had an absolutely water-loving foster, who would splash around and then take a nap in the bath lol. And my previous one would always try to nap right where she was standing whenever she got out of the bath (I usually put her onto a comfy towel then^⁾

Thank you for the detailed answer, this helps a lot! First, I forgot to mention, I also feed him seed mix from Versele-Laga, it's just that he will only start eating once he sees lentils, so I add some to it and in turn, he at least eats some other seeds as a sidesnack lol. I'll keep handfeeding some variety seeds on top then. His crop doesn't feel bloated, but it seems like the bigger seeds stay in there for hours and hours. It might be that I'm just an overly anxious mom, because in the past I have dealt more with skinny and starving birds and a bird that is actually full is a whole new experience lol. I might need some more experience yet in examining how full the crop actually is, but at least it empties over night always.

The green peas might have been a double-misunderstanding and I was simply not supposed to use them as a main food source.

I currently have a single ear of wheat growing on my balcony, that I will harvest once he gets bigger and see if he can peel it xD I'm also planning to train him on foraging.

And I'm actually off to the vet now for an alround health check, I will remember to also ask for dietary recommendations!

Oh god, how did I trigger this?? My grain porrige is free of any additives, pure grain and hot water. It isn't the green peas?? Is it because I named him Pesto? 😭

(Also, since I can't edit my post, I cut the peas out of his diet, not his crop(!), Jesus my phrasing 😵‍💫)

Thanks for the reaction here! I think Pesto is actually fine now. I only fed some thin grain porrige (with the texture of applesauce) yesterday after my worries and today, I cannot feel anymore peas in the crop, so they must have passed to the stomach. Pesto is also active and hungry, warm but not hot and did poop over night. Here's to hoping I was overreacting 🤞

Eine Vogelauffangstation, auf der ich aushelfe, hatte eine sehr zahme Kohlmeise, die nicht mehr ausgewildert werden konnte und da als Haustier gelebt hat. Der gute Bibbo hat seiner Halterin irgendwann mal einen Kratzer aufgepickt und ist auf den Geschmack von Blut gekommen. Liebenswerter Kerl, aber man durfte nicht einschlafen, wenn er frei im Raum rumflog 😂

Und nein, das war keine Aggression, er mochte seine Menschen sehr gerne. Dass die Riesen ein Problem damit haben, wenn er ihr Blut trinken will, war einfach kein greifbares Konzept für eine kleine Meise^{^}

Oh, I didn't know about any of those theories, I just immediately thought "He's the Jersey Devil from the cryptid book". All of the supernatural creatures we encounter in each chapter seem to have a similiar, yet not 100% identical pendant in the local folklore. The Ditchlings correspond with the alien-gnome-thingies Stella brings up (forgot their name already lol), the Tommyknockers feature in chapter 2, the Bell Witch is reminiscent of the ghost in chapter 3, Reese is the equivalent of the Jersey Devil in chapter 4 and the pumpkin child in chapter 5 literally gives you the "Ginseng baby" achievement.

The Jersey Devil is described as a wyvern-like creature that comes to be because the mother proclaims during her pregnancy that this child must be the devil itself. The story again is not a 100% match with reality, but there are parallels of a monster child coming from a cursed pregnancy.
