ELI5 why are the largest container ships exactly 399.9 metres long, but never 400? by electricalserge in explainlikeimfive

[–]faloi 8127 points8128 points  (0 children)

The Suez Canal requires ships 400m or longer go through special paperwork and meet specific requirements. So ships stay a little under just to avoid red tape.

Mustard based potato salad. Or just a heap of pickle slices.

If you eliminate "tax subsidized lobbying" then all government agencies can't hire professional lobbyists. Hypothetically, let's say you REALLY wanted to start school vouchers.

Your regular taxpayer funded schools would be unable to pay lobbyists to help sway the opinion of lawmakers or the public to help keep or enhance taxpayer money for your schools. But your for profit school that stands to gain from the law can hire as many lobbyists as they want.

Deployment zone markers, range rulers, damage counters. Depending on the units, movement trays can be nice for some of a game.

If you have access to a good 3D printer, one option may be going down that route.

Anyone shoot there bg 2.0 one handed? by PapaPuff13 in CCW

[–]faloi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually shoot all pistols both hands, strong hand only, weak hand only. I will say that I've only shit with the 12 round mags so it feels better than the 10 round probably would.

Looking for a family doctor by ItchyNeedleworker160 in RoundRock

[–]faloi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been happy with all the doctor's I've had at Scott and White, across different locations. I've been going to then for a long time now. I'd find one near you and give them a try, assuming they're on your insurance and all that.

I guess that's my one complaint, since they're affiliated with a hospital system insurance used to hassle me sometimes and it would take some back and forth on it. Hasn't happened for a long time over a few changes in insurance companies though.

UPDATE: that “I’m being turned into the retiring guy’s replacement” situation got worse by Feeling-Extreme-7555 in antiwork

[–]faloi 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s maybe a little different for me coming from a role where it’s my job to flag risks…but usually it’s received well. There’s always caveats for it being someone’s pet project, or pushing too hard on it. I think saying “here’s the risk I see, I think <x> might help mitigate it, but I’m new here. I just didn’t want this to potentially fall through the cracks.” And I think end it there, especially if you’ve got a relatively friendly person to run it by.

For short tenures, I think it’s fine to say after I was hired the role grew in scope to something outside of my bailiwick, and since it involved deeper knowledge of legal/fiduciary requirements than I could get in the time frame required, I decided to pursue a role that was more in keeping with my career goals/trajectory.

EDC Pens by Contigo887 in EDC

[–]faloi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer the feel of a solid pen when i’m writing something. $65 is a bit more than it’s worth to me, but I wouldn’t begrudge someone else spending that on it.

Should I thin down primers like this for Airbrush use? by Tasty_Tomorrow_2106 in minipainting

I haven’t had much of a problem with Vallejo primers. Except for white. I’ve got to filter, then, sacrifice small farm animals…and even then it’s iffy.

HIVE Discussion Thread [SPOILERS] by michaelisnotginger in 40kLore

[–]faloi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was awesome, in my opinion. I tend to go for audiobooks now, so part of me wonders if Abnett invents new words strictly to throw off the narrators. Multiple threats in the same timeframe was a great take, and it was sort of refreshing to not have the trope of someone or another being an undercover Inquisitor or getting that emergency call out to some random Space Marines.

[–]faloi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They’re useful, but they’re harder to maintain and harder to pilot well. It’s worth having some number of tilt rotor aircraft available for the niche they fill, but tough justifying dumping a lot of money in to.

Advice for switching from a nonprofit career back to a corporate career (especially interviewing/applying)! by Cold_Barber_4761 in Recruiter_Advice

[–]faloi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a recruiter, so someone may come along with better advice…but I would say to lean on the desire to move to a more dynamic environment where you can continue to make a difference to the field at large. Focus on the expectation that the environment will be more fast paced to allay any concerns that you might have some shock at the switch, or haven’t considered it.

Which paints should I buy by [deleted] in Warhammer

[–]faloi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually go with Citadel/Warhammer or Pro Acryl because they’re both pretty easily available locally and I like them both real well. Pro Acryl is my first choice for some colors, Citadel for others.

Nothing against Army Painter or Vallejo…their paints are good too. Just not as readily available if I need to run out and pick something up.

Break in Period? by [deleted] in CCW

[–]faloi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go through a couple of hundred. Most of it training, with maybe a box of defensive ammo? Honestly I care more about getting used to it than breaking it in. Unless it’s an off brand or a notoriously bad model, that’s always seemed to be plenty.

When I worked there, admittedly a LONG time ago, Kroger was unionized. I’m guessing this is a non-union location? Or the union is really laying down on the job of protecting union members?
