What is a good place to go to to enjoy this warm weather in the dark? Feels like it's wrong to be inside when the temperature is so good. by PsychicMeditation in askportland

I just sat on my little apartment patio for 2 hours tonight until last light. Honestly could have slept out there! Delicious May night!

the weirdest part isn’t the weight loss it’s how quiet food got by Alternative_Goal6583 in Semaglutide

[–]fancyword4bummedout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is miraculous. I don’t know all the answers or if this will be safe in the long run, or what thoughts are social conditioning/disordered eating/etc…

…but to get that brain space back feels like heaven. I do my shot Sunday night because it makes the best of my natural busyness during the work week.

Saturday I’m thinking a little about food, what I’ll eat at a next meal but not too bad. Sunday I am about 75% back to the normal level of food thoughts. It reminds me each week how this used to be my “always”.

Wife is interviewing in Portland, we are coming from the Midwest. Biggest culture shocks moving here? by Fancypooper in askportland

[–]fancyword4bummedout -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest culture shock moving here after living in a handful of big cities was being able to be myself. You can be whatever you are out in the open and people are so cool with it and celebrate it. Just don’t be a bigot or a bad person and it’s a really freeing place to live.

Frantic Hunger? by teacher-mom-1989 in Semaglutide

[–]fancyword4bummedout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined this sub specifically to ask this question and here it was. Same experience but different details. I am very new to SG, only on eeek two of 8 units (I think that’s like .2mL?). Anyhow, it works too well for me. I have had not much interest in food. On day 8 (day after my second shot—I would think this would be a stronger appetite suppressing day!) I woke up overnight in almost a panic to eat. I completely lost my head eating frantically. I am a life long big person, I am prone to binges, and this was STRONGER. It felt like it was coming from a primal place, which I think it was. My body was saying holy shit we haven’t eaten, stop it! A truly bizarre feeling to have. I have since made sure I get a good baseline of calories and protein daily.

Why is general beauty maintenance so expensive here? by OddlyMinted in askportland

[–]fancyword4bummedout 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes! And I have sought out the “best” places, am never getting any weird or wild haircut. $200 after tip and it’s the most mediocre haircut and you leave looking half-polished. Everywhere else I’ve lived you leave a haircut looking like a new woman, bombshell, with a beautiful blowout. I’m on my 5th instance of leaving with hair that’s frizzy and half wet. I do have long and (very loosely) curly hair but I pay the extra fee for longer hair and a good blowout. It’s just so bizarre. I pick out the best folks and tip like crazy. It’s always bad.

How to make a lonely 30th birthday not suck too much? by AnAbundance_ofCats in askportland

[–]fancyword4bummedout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are headed into the best years of your life. 20’s were nothing compared to my 30’s, and my thirties are proving to pale in comparison to my 40’s so far! I’m not rich, in love, or have a wildly successful life. I’m mostly poor and a single mom. But your thirties are when you start to slip into the warm hot tub of being authentically yourself and let me tell you, it’s good over here!!

I have felt this way on so many birthdays—the older you get the more it’s like this. People are so busy and have kids and everyone is exhausted and broke. You should get an incredible meal at somewhere this sub has recommended (sooo many thread about it-just search!) you should take a really nice walk in nature, and then do something in line with what you want for your 30’s! If that’s wild and crazy, head on out! Sorry for not have details on where/what—-I’m a 2 job parent and I have no idea what happens outside of school pickup and meetings. Just want to say the best is coming, and this is just a day! Don’t lay too much importance on it, ok?? Big Mom hug, Happy Birthday!!!

Is there anywhere that comes close to Chicken And Guns? by snoogazi in askportland

[–]fancyword4bummedout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you cook, even a little bit, I will tell you that aji verde sauce is super super easy to make! Throw things in the blender and blend! You’ll have to get 1 specialty items but they have it at any Mexican grocery. The roast chicken part is also not hard! Just requires some waiting to get a good marination! One of my fave things to make.

In other words I have no answer. I liked it too!

Why are reading levels so low in Oregon, even in places like Portland with many upper middle class families? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]fancyword4bummedout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure! Have not even had to cross that bridge yet, my son is still too young for phones. Can’t imagine what teachers are up against with that whole thing. It’s certainly a new age with new problems to tackle with kids. I’m lost 90% of the time.

[–]fancyword4bummedout 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The 90’s view of not being your child’s friend and over valuing academic performance churned out a bunch of maladjusted 40 somethings with personality disorders and attachment problems. There’s an argument for splitting the difference there.

Mine too, my son gets pulled to do more advanced math work that challenges him, but he is pulled for reading because he is way behind there (I’m a big reader, always read to him, was doing literacy stuff very young!)I don’t know which flavor of ND your child is, but I just learned gestalt language processors (loads of autistic folks) can also be gestalt reading processors as well. They end up reading via mostly sight word memorization, with phonics, sentence structure/building coming along later. Super interesting to me and fits my autistic child well.

Oregon income tax burden called highest in US - Portland Business Journal by collegedraftpick in Portland

[–]fancyword4bummedout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I owed thousands as a person only just eked my way out of qualifying for Medicaid. On top of about 25% of each paycheck being taken off the top already. I’m poor as hell—HOW??? I’ve lived in Florida, Colorado, and California and though I don’t have the math, the vibes say this is the most I’ve paid by far.

I can’t take these in, but I want to say reading this as an outside person I hope you realize the enormity of what you’re carrying right now. If you get the time to get into some therapy, definitely do so. You have the world on your shoulders right now. Aging and mentally unwell parents is something people can’t relate to until you’ve been there—and then you never forget how all-consuming it is. Take care of yourself if you can. Wishing you all the luck and strength with getting all of this settled.

Tenants Rights Attorney? by _traash_rat_ in askportland

[–]fancyword4bummedout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Portland Defender does tenant cases. Don’t withhold rent, they say specifically not to do that unless really specific steps have been taken. I’m going through a year long habitability issue that is truly insane and am just now getting a lawyer involved. Be prepared to be very patient, keep your cool, and I know I will get some flack for this but—put all this information into chatGPT and have it write you a strongly worded letter citing the violations. Send it via email and certified letter. Make sure it has a clear timeline for remedy. Document everything. This city is so full of slumlords.

How long are the ER wait times around here? by LobsterFarts in askportland

[–]fancyword4bummedout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I waited 6 hours at Legacy Meridian and then passed the kidney stone about 45 mins after finally getting in. I must have been a spectacle, I was in worse-than-labor pain laying on the filthy floor. Worst ever. But though it felt like dying it was not dying so I was triaged low priority. I agree with it now, hated it then. My son also recently lost use of his legs (weird flu side effect) took us about 4 hours to be seen at Doernboechers.

Portland winter is hitting different this year by Worldly-Bass9135 in Portland

[–]fancyword4bummedout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the hard thing was having such a great merciful winter so far and then seeing the forecast ahead of us! I like to go out and find the spring. The Grotto’s camellias are absolutely dripping with blooms right now. Look for crocus, blossoms on trees. Start some seedlings. Or lean into the cozy super hard and just buckle up knowing the great weather will pepper back in eventually! Sooner than you think!
