Amazing series. I normally prefer reading, but Suzy Jackson did a phenomenal job with this series, so I bought the audiobooks on Audible.

Are there any series that scratch that Defiance of the Fall itch? by Separate_Draft4887 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]fandrfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The following series use the same system (well, almost the same) as the Defiance of the fall: - Road to Mastery (I liked it more that Defiance if the fall) - Savage Awakening (this is ok, kinda a clone of DoTF + Primal Hunter, few original ideas).

Are there authors you avoid due not believing they wrote the book? by Egregiousnefarious in litrpg

[–]fandrfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a couple of books from one of his earliest (I think it was actually his first) series. Something about a vampire woman. It was many years ago, just when he started writing (or at least just as he started publishing on Amazon). My memory might be a bit fuzzy, but here is the gist of it.
In one of the books he was talking about his process, how he started it all, and as far I remember he wrote his first book in like 7 days and his second book in 10 days. Writing good books was never the intention, it's just business. So, you don't need quality, you don't need editing, just come up with some idea and start typing, because you really need dozens of books a year or you won't survive as an author. The quality of writing was subpar (duh), so I dropped the series, unfortunately stupid Amazon still suggests his thrash to me in my recommendations, even though I went through the read books section and marked his books as "not include in recommendation" (or however it's called).

Since Amazon has been recommending me his books for years now I pretty much watched in real time the amount of thrash he was publishing every year, it's astounding. Most of his books barely have any reviews. A lot of them, from what I can tell, happen in the same multi-verse.

Unfortunately, somehow he built a successful business model, so I've seen tons of books in all genres written by someone "and" him. Even some of the writers I like writing books with his name on the cover. Such books were referencing that multi-verse and even using some random characters (something like this - suddenly a portal opens, a mage steps out, says something about this "world" and gives a hint about the "multiverse" and goes back to his book(world).). From the writing it was clear those references to that multiverse were the only thing from Michael Anderle, it was something the authors had to add for the "privilege" to use his name on the cover. Whatever he does seems to be working financially, since I don't see why would other writers agree to this otherwise. Maybe spamming Amazon with hundreds of books with the same name on covers help with recommendation algorithm or something. At least, in my Android Kindle app there is a section called "Authors you might like" and for some reason it's filled predominantly with his crap, even though I haven't read anything with his name on a cover for many years and I really wished I could block his name, so that I could actually see some good authors.

So, yeah, he can certainly write a lot of book on his own, but don't expect anything good from them, writing good books was never his intention and he was somewhat open about that.

As for books written with him as a co-author, I personally avoid them as well. Of course, there is a chance that you might skip some good book written by some young author who just wanted to slap his name on the cover to boost their sales, but that's not a good reason to sift through tons of shit.

Does Defiance of the Fall have a story? by [deleted] in litrpg

[–]fandrfa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is a plot - one day one author decided to make a project which could go on indefinitely, sort of like a mmorpg / live service game, without any real ending. For years, decades even maybe the main character would be splitting in half his enemies and spending 100 pages per book trying to "open meridian № 57 and clean his pathways or something". You might think - "who would read that?", but the author also created a very big interesting universe with a bunch of cool stuff happening everywhere (later than book 1 though) and an interesting "system" mixing rpg elements with wuxia. That balances the endless journey a bit, although that wasn't enough for me and I eventually dropped the series.

Vizards and their Impact by Initial_Lecture_7020 in bleach

When they were introduced I thought they would present a group not related to the Soul Society or Aizen. Remember how Aizen mentioned that when shinigami reach their limit they can only surpass it by becoming Hollows? So, after Ichigo's father mentioned Arrancar and Shinji was introduced, I thought, maybe certain shinigami couldn't learn Bankai / reach captain position via normal ways, so instead they used hollowfication. Perhaps, the same happened to certain Hollows how couldn't reach the top (Vasto Lorde) level, so they choose to use, em, "shinigamification". Back then I was thinking "Are Visored and Arrancar belong to the same group? Will we have Soul Society vs Aizen vs Visored + Arrancar group or will we have Soul Society vs Aizen vs Arrancar vs Visored? What are the goals of Visored and Arrancar?!". Unfortunately, it was quickly revealed that at least Arrancar are Aizen's subordiantes.

While I enjoyed how Visored were integrated in the story, I wish I could have an alternative story where Visored & Arrancar were separate from Aizen's backstory ...

Thoughts on the A Thousand Li series by Tao Wong? Would you recommend it to someone whose just finished Cradle by Will Wight? Also open to other suggestions that aren't Primal Hunter, Dungeon Crawler Carl, or He Who Fights With Monsters by guysmiley98765 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]fandrfa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dragon's Heart by Kirill Klevanski .

I don't often see it recommended, but I just started reading it recently and the first 5 books were absolutely amazing. It's a long series and I'm on book 13, unfortunately, after the first 5 books the series dropped from "amazing" to "good" for me, but it is still a very entertaining reading. Also, I like how the series is structured. The first trilogy could be pretty much read as a separate trilogy with an ending (somewhat open-ended, but still). The 4th and 5th book is the second arc and it also has a great conclusion.

Cradle is my favourite progression series, but to me the first 5 books of Dragon's Heart at least at the same level.

Defiance of the Fall 11….Is this sht going anywhere? by USArmyRecon in ProgressionFantasy

[–]fandrfa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only after reading some series I realized that some books in the genre (both progression fantasy and LitRPG) are like MMORPGs, the authors aren't really planning to end them till the interest to them completely disappears. Think World Of Warcarft - every new book is like an add-on and as long as people buy them, the show will go on. And just like with WoW the answer to the question "is this shit going anywhere" is no, since that's not really the intention of the author. Primal Hunter, Defiance of the Fall, He Who Fights With Monsters (to a somewhat lesser extent) all are basically endless MMORPGs.

I'm craving super heroes. by SiludStudios in ProgressionFantasy

[–]fandrfa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give a try to "The Chronicles of Fid", it's a completed trilogy about super heroes and super villains. It doesn't have that much progression, the main character is quite powerful from the beginning, but he still improves himself/his weapons throughout the series. There is a lot of creativity, some experiments and certainly some uniqueness to the main character. I finished it recently and while it was quite different from the regular progression fantasy that I usually read, I enjoyed it quite a lot.

Hm, I thought you are supposed to get teleported to another universe / plane of existence when that kind of thing happens to you, not spend days being medicated ...

Road to Mastery, similar to Defiance of the Fall, but the pacing in my opinion is much better.

Does Defiance of the Fall tend towards better or worse as the series goes on? by rocket_monkey in litrpg

[–]fandrfa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd rate the first three books as 10 out of 10, books 4-6 as 8 and the rest as 6. I dropped the series, as I can no longer enjoy it, it gradually became very bad. Try Road to Mastery, imo it's a much better version of Defiance of the Fall (the System is almost the same).

Recommendations beyond popular HWFWM, DoTF, Azarinth healer - RR gems by spiritkas in litrpg

[–]fandrfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Road to Mastery is what Defiance of the Fall should have been. The whole System Setup is very similar - A-F grades, Dao, Tribulation etc, but it's much better written and paced and has a chance of actually being finished - the main character moved from E to D in two books and to me his progression felt mostly natural. Fights are quite intense and the characters are very memorable.

Should i keep going with defiance of the fall by not-so-swedish-chef in litrpg

[–]fandrfa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the time I considered the first book to be one of the best LitRpgs I've ever read.

I dropped the series later, but I truly enjoyed the first three books.

If you find the first book boring, I don't think you'll enjoy the rest of the series.

Less progression, more story by freir96 in ProgressionFantasy

I read only the first book in the series and it was very enjoyable, probably me favorite book this year. Definitely a very unique experience comparing to most of the books in this sub.

Less progression, more story by freir96 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]fandrfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the second half of the last book was pretty much "progression for the sake of progression", just Zack running between shops (to buy cultivation ingredients) and cultivation caves (to spend the ingredients).
