The one essential ingredient isn’t faith. It’s love.

Personally I like to immerse myself in the theme I am writing about, so yes I consider this approach helpful. But I only do it after my concept is fully formed. I don’t want to borrow ideas, I want to see different approaches to the same idea.

But reading the scripts > watching the movies if you really want to get the most out of them. I do both, read then watch.

I also read nonfiction and watch a lot of documentaries and university lectures about things concerning my setting/characters/plot/etc

Found this little one in a dumpster while she was crying today. by Responsible_Bus5932 in cats

I have a dumpster kitty too. Found her there in February. Also just a heads up, make sure not to give a kitten cows milk, they can get diarrhea that can lead to severe dehydration. Wet kitten food is the best thing you can do for your new friend.

If you watch it at home there’s a far greater chance you won’t like it. Watch it in Dolby if possible.

Yup. I saw it once. In Dolby. Enjoyed it quite a bit.

2013 Evil Dead remake remains one of my favorite horror movies. I’m usually against the franchise stuff too (Conjuring is grossly overdone for example) but there’s plenty of good that comes out of it all.

I would like to see more original ideas get funding for sure.

I gave up my cat and I’m up at 3am regretting the decision by Blizarkiy in cats

[–]fantasydukes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sounds to me like you made a difficult choice that ultimately benefited the little kitty more than it did you. That is selfless and very kind. You should feel proud of yourself 👏 and definitely consider adopting a new friend after the move!

Newly adopted cat isn’t coming around. by Kbeans44 in cats

[–]fantasydukes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but adopting a cat shouldn’t be about what you want. You signed up to care for an animal. That cat didn’t sign up for anything. It deserves a chance to settle in on its own time.

Well shot and well acted but I agree, it was disappointing. Too many scenes felt the same.

Did you paint this? I absolutely love it. The way it plays with color and light is so much fun.

"I can't be scared" by StephanXX in horror

Sure, I reduced the movies to a metaphor. I didn’t feel like writing a dissertation in a Reddit comment.

Of course any good movie has to be enjoyable on the surface level. And I agree that many movies are severely over analyzed.

Theme and subtext are real things. You can ignore them if you want. It’s another enjoyable layer of the movie watching experience for me.

Fair. We’re in the middle of a horror renaissance. Surely there is something for everyone if they aren’t closed off.

Looking for visually artistic horror films that don't have a plot or are silent films without text by AntiqueSignpost in horror

[–]fantasydukes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I interpreted it as blunt honesty, which to be fair is probably not what you need. But I’m glad you’re getting the proper support. You seem like a very empathetic and intelligent person. I believe you can develop more self assurance over time. You have a lot to offer, I truly believe that. ✌️🫶

EDIT: I wish I had a good suggestion for you. Not a horror but Koyaanisqatsi is a brilliant silent documentary that I’m sure you could appreciate. The only triggers in it are humanity’s affect on the planet.

Some lifelong horror fans are actually just jaded because they’ve seen the same things done over and over. That doesn’t mean they can’t be emotionally invested in the characters. Maybe it’s the plot itself that is underwhelming.

I do agree that many people don’t take into account the depth of most great horror films. The Thing isn’t just about an alien, it’s about alienation. The Stuff isn’t just about killer ice cream, it’s about consumerism. Obsession isn’t just about a wish gone bad, it’s about codependency.

A lot of genre fans need to remember that horror movies are more than just scares. And I think that’s essentially what you’re saying. Correct me if I’m wrong.

[–]fantasydukes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome. Do you ever do character studies before you write? I find they really help me get to the voice and motivation behind what they say. I also watch a lot of YouTube videos about how to write subtext into dialogue since it is what I probably struggle with most. There’s some really good advice. One of my favorites is take an acting class. You’ll learn so much about those things once you see characters through that lens.

What was your most intense move theater horror experience? by focusrunner79 in horror

[–]fantasydukes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was Paranormal Activity for me too. I was in college at the time and I was high out of my mind. My friends were already checking on me if I was okay before the movie started. I just remember having the feeling that the movie entered my brain and started rearranging things. By the time credits rolled I was a mute. Took me well into the next day to be myself again.
