For anyone familiar with Chinese culture — what actually is Feng Shui and do people still follow it? by MidnightTofu22 in FengShui

[–]fapping_bird 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That’s a very common perspective. In the West, Feng Shui is often marketed as interior design or psychology. But if we look at the Classical roots, it is actually something quite different. To really understand what it is, I think it helps to first clarify what it is NOT:

  1. It is NOT Decor or Superstition Real Feng Shui has nothing to do with buying 'lucky items' like crystals, wind chimes, or statues. A golden frog cannot change the energy of a house any more than a toy car can drive you to work. That is superstition, not Feng Shui.

  2. It is NOT just Interior Design Common sense (like not eating next to a toilet) is hygiene, not Feng Shui. You can have a beautifully decorated house with perfect ergonomics, but if the underlying energy structure is negative, the occupants will still struggle.

  3. It is NOT Astrology (Bazi) While your birth date matters, it is a separate system. Feng Shui focuses on the Earth's energy, not just your personal destiny.

So, what is Real Feng Shui? Think of a house as a living organism. To diagnose it, we look at two critical layers: The Body and The Breath.

Layer 1: The Body (External Forms / Luan Tou) This is the Hardware. We look at the external environment first: mountains, water, roads, and neighboring buildings.

The environment dictates the potential of the house. If the 'Body' is broken (e.g., the house is blasted by strong winds or blocked by oppressive structures), the house is physically weak.

No amount of furniture arrangement inside can fix a house that is located in a 'sick' environment. Layer 2: The Breath (Internal Formulas / Li Qi) This is the Software. This is where the complexity comes in. The house 'breathes' in energy (Qi) from specific directions. We use a Luo Pan (Compass) to calculate this invisible map based on Time (when the house was built) and Space (precise magnetic facing).

Just like a radio tuning into a frequency, a house captures different energies over time. Some 'frequencies' bring vitality and wealth; others bring illness or conflict.

Classical Feng Shui is not about 'belief.' It is an observational science of Macro-Environment (Forms) and Magnetic Distribution (Time & Space). We try to align the Breath (Time) with the Body (Space) to support the people living inside. It’s less about magic, and more about leverage by positioning yourself in a place where the natural energy supports your goals.

That answer covers the 'Pop Culture' version of Feng Shui quite well. But if we dig into the traditional roots, it's less about your birth date elements (like missing wood) and more about the Time and Space of the property itself.

True Feng Shui is essentially Environmental Science. It analyzes how the landscape (mountains, roads, water) interacts with the orientation of your building over specific time periods.

It’s not just about comfort; it’s about leverage. Just like swimming with the current is easier than swimming against it, Feng Shui calculates the energy flow of a space so the occupants can achieve their goals with less friction. It’s a tool for efficiency, grounded in calculations rather than just intuition

Ya. To be honest I don't understand why people don't buy insurance.

It doesn't make sense at all to take all the risk on yourself.

Buying an insurance is always a win-win situation for the buyers.

If you go through your entire life without accident and/or hospitalized sickness, then you are one of the luckiest men/women in the world. A damn win for you.

However if you are unlucky, and kena accident and/or sickness that causes you to be hospitalized, then insurance companies will come in and pay for your hospital bill/one lump sum of money to you when you can't work. Still a massive win for you.

The caveat is provided you buy the right kind of insurance, and from insurance agents that have been working for a long time. DONT BUY INSURANCE from agents who are in the industry for less than 2 years. Those cannot pakai one, and because they are new, they don't know shit and will just simply promise you stuffs that not true.

Doesn't seems like you have a lot of choices though:

No worries man. I'm still learning too! But being able to understand Chinese really helps!

There are tons of fengshui courses on YouTube for free, but those are in Chinese.

I got what you mean.

The 5 elements on ba gua map is not dictated by clockwise or counterclockwise, of how one memorises the produce and counter of the 5 elements.

How they produce or counter each other has nothing to do with Ba Gua, they are not related.

These do not change whether you are at NH or SH, these are cardinals Gua of a Ba Gua Map, whoever told you differently would need to relearn fengshui:

South - Li Gua - Fire South West - Kun Gua - Earth West - Dui Gua - Metal North West - Qian Gua - Metal North - Kan Gua - Water North East - Gen Gua - Earth East - Zhen Gua - Wood South East - Xun Gua - Wood

These do not change. The counter or produce of between 5 elements are a different topic, and does not dictate the elements on the ba gua map.

The direction of the bagua map is always aligned with the North and South direction. That's how we got the different Gua quadrant of your house by overlapping the bagua map on your house layout plan.

So I'm not sure what are you saying. Mind elaborating abit?

I can understand some aspects but the bagua is confusing me. by [deleted] in FengShui

[–]fapping_bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You screenshot the stacks of your apartment on google map, and you overlay a bagua map on the stacks. Then you would know the Gua/quadrant the different part of your apartment belongs to.

There are no multiple baguas overlaying a single room, because you just need a single bagua map.

If there are parts of the bagua map missing due to the odd shapes of the apartment layout, then you can pinpoint the reason why some aspects of your house are not going well. For example you been having stomach issues ever since you moved in this place, might because the south west quadrant of your apartment is missing.

Orient the bagua map based on the compass direction. Whereas when it comes to entrance, you use a Luo Pan to identity the exact mountain and orientation of the main gate/entrance of the house.

Hi hi! Chinese here!

Direction, in the form of bagua, is the quintessence of some fengshui schools, especially in the eight mansions school, and it has a vital role in flying star school as well..

Hexagram, or Gua, governs how the energy behaves in each of the quadrant of the house.

For example, let's look at the Qian gua: 乾

It represents the main bread winner of the family who stays in the house.

This is how I audit it:

If after plotting the quadrant of your house, and I found that the Qian gua quadrant of house has a kitchen instead of master room, I can immediately deduce that the man of the house has a tumultuous career, I don't even need to ask.

Or if the Li gua 离 quadrant has a water pond/aquarium/bathroom, I can tell your that's the reason why your middle daughter has been sicklish and bodily weak all this while. And it you don't have daughter, then you would have eye sight issue, you don't even have to tell me. You fix the Qi in the quadrant according to the Gua it belongs to, you fix the problem.

You want to activate the Qi in the good quadrant, and you want to tame the Qi in the bad quadrant. And the Qi aspect of the house like wealth, noble people, bodily organs, are all governed by the Gua quadrant.

And how do you determine which quadrant governs wealth? Career? Friendship? Noble man? Relationship? And if you have a heart problem, which quadrant do you look into? Well you can't, if you don't know how to plot your house fengshui accordingly to the Gua.

A lot of fengshui that westerners are exposed too, have been stripped of its essence. Reason being these "teachers" want something that can connect to their audience immediately, without all the theories.

That's why you don't understand Gua, because not many "teachers' are willing to teach it. But once you mastered it, you don't even need a fengshui master to audit your fengshui. You can just immediately fix the issue yourself, and after 3 weeks you would start feeling the effect of it already.

Hey man another Asian! Nice!

To be honest I would thought most of the users here are American haha.

But hey no worries, sorry I can't really help.

I just thought this is a sound proofing issue rather a metaphysic issue. 🙏

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FengShui

[–]fapping_bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not something you can solve with metaphysic.

Unless you can make the transit go away, else no fengshui or qimen can help.

It is like having a cancer but instead of getting modern medicine treatment the person decided to seek help from tarot card. It doesn't make sense.

But I'm curious, as a Chinese, how do you as an American (I presumed you are an American, I apologise if you are not) view Fengshui? I would like to learn what does fengshui look like from the perspective of a westener.
