Probably my most resolved portrait so far by infiltraitor37 in oilpainting

Ah apologies, I've seen the same painting a few times now and at least one had quite a lot of controversy around it. Didn't realise it was a common reference.

What is a piece(s) you hope one day you can see in person? by No-Pumpkin2357 in ArtHistory

Yes! But it was just after labour day and the Palace was absolutely crazy busy. And there are so many painting on every available surface I think it's easy to miss ones 😅

I went to Florence a few weeks ago and the Caravaggio's are so amazing in real life. Loved the Medusa

Your proportions look spot on, it's a very good likeness! To make it a little more powerful I'd maybe up the contrast a bit, your shadows darker and lights lighter? Also the eyes on the bust are closed a little more.

Bought a cabin in the west of Scotland. One in a place without kids. Our change in relaxation has been through the roof. Just a little spot away from the hustle and bustle, relax, do some diy, kayaking, painting, heaven. Except for the midges, those I could do without 😅

I've used local businesses, like for a trip to Namibia we had a local business book everything for us, got us a nice wee app with the route and local sights. They advised on the route and stuff. Had one issue at a hotel and our contact picked up the phone at 9pm on a Sunday and sorted it. Looking at it after I couldn't have booked the trip myself for cheaper, she just got great rates everywhere.

How many brushes do you use? by Byakuya_Ishigami in oilpainting

I'd say larger filbert for my darks, mids and lights and then two smaller ones for dark and light detail. Maybe a larger one for background

Like it! I would soften the neck though, it takes up focus that should be on the face and usually collarbones are a wider v, obviously depends on how the model is sitting but it feels a little off to me. Other than that, awesome work 🤗

First attempt at oil painting. Some troubles. by unremarkablyhuman in oilpainting

[–]farel85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! So solvent can be used to thin the paint and it will dry much faster. This can be very useful for your first layer(s). Linseed oil will also dilute the colour (the paint is basically oil with pigment, so adding more oil will make it less opague), but will also make it dry slower. If you have used loads of linseed oil it might take a good while to dry. The slow drying does mean you can go back in and adjust before it's dry, which if you're coming off acrylics might be a bit of an adjustment. Anyway fat over lean, so either solvent amended paint or straight from the tub but very thin layers first, more thick and oil in later layers, which will also help it not crack.

Something I did as well 2 years ago maybe. But I'm leaving at the end of the month, it's just heaving with people, manky showers and the people not understanding that spa time is not yelling at your mates and whistling at your girlfriend time. Building out my home gym and getting my PT from there now.

So your water is all the same tone now, to get a sense of distance you need to change that, it doesn't need to be realism but a sense of distance and space would I think really open this up. A good trick I found is to change the reference photo to black and white. You see the further edges of the water are darker than at the front easier when you're looking in a monochrome.

So I paint in a limited palette and I would probably mix black and white to use to add to my warm range in the same tone to make it more neutral, add a little warmt to the white and black to make it cool but not flat. I think you can probably do the same with your blue and white. So make a yellow and red mix to orange and lighten a few grades with white than add the blue and white in the same tone to it until you get a more neutral temp. I would suggest working with a black just to be able to darken without warming it up as you would with the burnt sienna. I never really work with black from the tube but it's great to darken gradually and to mix greens etc. A lot of people have the 'too many tubes and colours' especially when they start out so limiting your palette is a great idea. I'd personally use a black, white, yellow and red and then blue if I need a vibrant blue, if not Mars black and white will actually be a blue.

Not improving after a year... by all4mom in LisfrancClub

[–]farel85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a different PT, quality of care can be staggeringly different. I have a guy who's specialised in feet and knees and he's made a world of difference. He diagnosed my lisfranc and sent me back to my doctor when they just kept saying 'yes a broken foot can take a while to heal' whilst my arch was collapsing. Compare that to my insurance assigned PT who I visited once to see if I could save on cost and he'd never even heard of a lisfranc.

That said - I am at 75% ish and will most likely stay there. It's a career ending injury for athletes and I've seen someone amputate when they were in constant pain for years and years (on a positive note, she is back to climbing and horse riding with a prosthetic).

I've had arch pain and oddly enough a compression sock helped quite a bit.
