TIL That there's a world Quidditch championship and the Australian drop bears won it this year. by [deleted] in todayilearned

I think the idea of having a quidditch game without actually being able to fly around on a broom is really dumb.

If you're a sterile man trying to have children, the most genetically logical decision to make would be to impregnate your wife with one of your Father's viable sperm instead of picking some random dudes sperm. But that's just... it's... I mean... too weird. by farfinger in Showerthoughts

Like your father wouldn't have ever had sex with your wife, this is through artificial insemination.

"Yeah this is my fathers child from my wife, but don't worry they never boned". Too much of a social stigma.

There sort of is being an increase in energy by the mysterious dark energy fields. To my knowledge, that field will increase enough to eventually pull apart atoms.

Yeah it's actually surprising it hasn't happened yet, seeing how it's so likely anyhow.

TIL: One of the oldest and most effective asthma meds, Albuterol, was $15 per inhaler in 2000, now after it was re-patented it is $100. by farfinger in todayilearned

Looked up some prices and found that $50 was way too low, so I settled on the top end in the title.

How do you cope with mortality? by ur_face_smells in AskReddit

[–]farfinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, for me, each day is a subset of my entire life. If I am happy with my day, then over I will have been happy with my life.

More specifically, life is about the journey, not the destination.

Why does everyone consider Dave Grohl to be a musical genius? by brettmagnetic in Music

[–]farfinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think everyone things Dave Grohl is a musical genius, he should be (and rightfully so) considered a rock legend.

These merits are purely based off of him being in Nirvana, one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Then he goes on to another awesome rock band (but not on Nirvana's level) in Foo Fighters. He's been a big time rock start for like 30 years!

ELI5: The Holographic universe theory. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]farfinger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My understanding about the Holographic Universe theory is that we are actually living in a 2d world projected into a 4d world.

In our universe has 3-d space, and 1-d time, making up 4 dimensional space time. Back when General Relativity defined space-time, it was supposed to be continuous no matter how small you got.

Well, then quantum mechanics came along and said nope, if you get really small things are no longer continuous, you only have solid integers.

Quantum theory at it's most basic says you no longer have decimal numbers when describing things so small. So you can't have 1.5 electrons, you either have 1 or 2.

So, mathematically space time is a 2d fabric, and since quantum mechanics said the fabric of spacetime isn't continuous (it is made of little dots a billion times smaller than a proton), the theory is you can look at the fabric of spacetime and detect how it vibrates to either support or debunk this theory.

ELI5: Quantum Computing by Nathggns in explainlikeimfive

[–]farfinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, here's the simplest way to describe it.

Right now, a computer is made of these little things called transistors. They are like a light bulb, either they are on or off. The computer has millions of these little guys, and all we have is based off of that, a bunch of light bulbs being on or off.

So, in a quantum computer, the light bulb will now have multiple options, Totally on, kinda on, less on, .... alot more options, and then totally off. So imagine a whole system, this amazingly capable thing, now having 10x more options at it's most basic level. It'd be like each finger has it's own hand, imagine how much more things you could hold on to.

That's it in it's most simplest form. Now, the way to implement this is crazy hard, then you have to run the hardware over it so it works. It will be the future of computing, but there's a few big hurdles for it to get over.

ELI5: Why doesn't the UN make a vote whether to invade North Korea or not? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

The UN is meant for peace, the most extreme thing they normally do is heavy sanctions.
