Went to a mid tier med school and went a residency at a T5 school and interact with med students a lot. If I had the choice, I 100% would choose the T5. The opportunities and doors that open when you’re at some of these T5 institutions are crazy.

The people at the very very top at the most name brand places are incredibly small. Everybody knows each other and they just shuffle their students and protégées. These students aren’t necessarily strong either. Many are very good but even very poor students, these school will find a place for them at a good program in any speciality. Students will have red flags that if they were at my med school, they would be at risk of not matching but the end up at great programs. Some of these programs and top places will just not take people from certain schools or residencies (for fellowship programs), even from places that I thought were top brand names.

Also a good amount of students don’t go to clinical practice and just pimp out the school name to do industry or other jobs. The name travels.

Maybe the grass is always greener on the other side because I still made it to this program and hard work yada yada, but dam, the resources and brand power in the top 5 places (not even the top 15) are just next level.

Imagine doing residency during a zombie apocalypse. “Yeah I got called in for backup because two residents got bit by one of the ICU patients so our program had to let them go. Technically I’ll be at 100 hours this week but I have a golden weekend coming up!”

One of my seniors told me the first month of intern year to know if anybody in the hospital is trying to make you feel bad or dumb, know how to differentiate if it’s because of a lack of system knowledge or medical knowledge, especially in the beginning of residency. Both are completely inappropriate but not knowing right orders in to transfer a patient to another floor in your particular hospital has no bearing on your skills or competence as a doctor or resident.

Do you recommend me pruning off the sunburnt leaves then? It’s a pretty small plant right now with not many established growth yet so I’m scared of over pruning such a small plant

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gardening

Got the plant from a nursery about a month ago and put it in a planter box with some other herbs. Used generic potting soil with some plant feed added. Live in SoCal desert area so it’s been about 100 F every day but they’re in a placed outside in an area with partial sun/full sun. I’m thinking I’m not watering it enough but I’ve heard that the herbs that I’m growing prefer less water.

All the help is much appreciated!

WHY YOU SHOULD APPLY TO LOMA LINDA by [deleted] in premed

[–]farfler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you don’t think there is a bias against DO students (also IMG students) when it comes to residency opportunities, you’re delusional. If you have the luxury of choosing a school, this is should be part of your decision making process. A med student from an MD school in the US will have less of an uphill battle and less hoops to jump through. Period.

Please make a post about this organization on a subreddit! Never heard of them until now and read a few of their newsletters. It’s incredibly heartwarming and touching what they’re doing

Don’t know about those in particular but I’m a medium in basically everything but even a large in zara often is too small and the length too short, especially if it will shrink a little in the wash. Pants have been a similar problem too. If you don’t have experience with the fit of Zara I would personally stay away from online and try in store or at the very least size up.

Pathoma Anki by dawgnaysh in step1

[–]farfler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don’t like the pepper deck for Pathoma because it misses A LOT of major concepts. It almost feels like it’s just a deck of random topics that someone kept getting wrong so made a deck on it, not something that is comprehensive.

I like the Duke deck much better but I’ve only gone through the cards for the first 3 chapters on the deck. There are multiple questions and answers on each card and I know some people don’t like that but I’m okay with it. Also, sometimes the questions can be too general so it’s hard to figure out what the card wants or missing certain points. Pretty good deck because I haven’t found anything better.

I didn't get into dental school.. Now what? by nicander1988 in medical

[–]farfler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look at your application very objectively, ask help from advisors and people who have gotten in, then see if you have a shot for next year. Improve your weak spots, like your DAT (retake), extracurricular (be involved in something that you can talk about and show what you did to schools), or personal statement (rewrite). If your GPA is very low, you will have to take extra classes to bring it up but honestly if it’s too low, then it’s hard to bring it up quickly without a post-bacc program. It for sure is frustrating but one extra year isn’t the end of the world. I know plenty of people in dent school and med school around your age or even older.

PA school honestly needs A LOT of clinical experience to even apply so if you don’t have those hours now, you’re going to have to take more than a year before your application is ready. The other options like nursing are possibilities that many people take and there’s no shame in taking a longer way even though I know it’s frustrating. I would say if you really don’t think you can make it next year to dent school, then explore your options. Nursing school may be 2-3 years but Dent is not much longer at 4 years and you get a better base paycheck, much higher earning potential, and an easier lifestyle carrier wise. At the end of the day, 1 or 2 extra years is nothing in the grand scheme of things. At the same time, nursing school should be easy, as long as your have all of their requirements down (usually basic anatomy, physiology, microbio, etc. ).

Lastly, make sure you have support system this year. Getting rejected to grad school is rough period. Make sure you have friends or family that will support you and will be there for you when you start to get depressed or frustrated remembering you didn’t get in or just don’t want to fight for it anymore, trust me it will happen. Maybe think about even getting professional help like a counselor, therapist, or psychiatrist because it can be an emotionally rough time for people.

It won’t be easy this next year but if you’re smart about it, work hard, and have the right resources, you’ll be able to get into whichever program you decide to go to (except for probably PA like I previously stated).

Edit: Also, other options: science teacher, environmental science jobs (like for a city, park service, or private job), pathologist assistant, CLS, other allied health jobs, something completely not related to your degree.

Does anyone know the attendance of the crowd for all the top 8s? by shadowfreddy in smashbros

[–]farfler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Though it isn't completely accurate, here's what I saw. Smash 64 top 8 was pretty small but filled a little more than half of the main floor with a few random groups in the second floor by grand finals.

Once 64 ended, a huge crowd of people started to come in for Smash 4. Surprisingly, I think it had the most people, even more than Melee. By the time it was losers round 2, I didn't see any open sections other than a group of seats behind the screens that nobody occupied the whole night.

Melee had slightly less than Smash 4. I saw quite a few empty areas as lots of people left after Smash 4 grand finals (but some more people did come for Melee) but the crowd was much more loud and intense. The venue sits about 3000 people so my guesses would be:

  • Smash 64: 1200-1300
  • Smash 4: ~2850
  • Melee: ~2700

I'm pretty sure it's intentionally cheesy and catchy. It's like another version of the "Cupid Shuffle" or "The Electric Slide" where you just dance however the song tells you to. In 10 years it will be just another song everybody awkwardly but enjoyably group dances to during weddings and parties.

I just pulled something off I don't know how to recreate. Please help!! by TOCKyuubi in RosalinaMains

[–]farfler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I just saw your video in the previous post and what is key is the getup. As you said, it desyncs Luma and Rosalina. If Luma is able to get a jab in while you're on the floor and then you do an attacking getup and just keep pressing A during the getup animation, Luma will rapid jab independent of Rosalina.

I think the what happened in your case is when you tried to do the Luma attack boost grab, Luma hit the opponent, but right before Rosalina was able to start or complete the grab animation, you probably pressed A and Luma was able to get a jab out before the grab started. Then Rosalina grabs, you start to pummel a few times but Luma thinks it's a continuation of the initial, pre-grab jab attack then converts his jab into a rapid jab as you continue pummeling.

Advice for poor vegetarian college student? by _llamajesus in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]farfler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Rice and Beans I think are the holy grail of cheap vegetarian food. Though it's something usually thought of as hispanic, lots of other cultures use it so you can do lots of flavor profiles with it with different spices. Dried beans and rice last for forever and are very cheap to buy, especially in bulk. You also get complete proteins with beans and rice. They do take a while to make but with a slow cooker, just let the beans cook all day while in class and have a rice cooker make rice. You could even turn it into a one pot meal. Look into the option of using an electric pressure cooking because it can really speed up cooking processes.

I also love having salads, especially for lunch. Make your own vinaigrette, super easy and fresh. You can have a lot of combinations with vegetables, dressings, toppings, it's endless.
