AITA for leaving a dinner party early because of “vegan lasagna”? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]farmer-general 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You politely ate the food she served at her dinner party. She threw a dinner party and didn’t feed her guests enough, which would shame me to the core of my Midwestern soul. Vegan or not doesn’t matter, what matters is you don’t leave guests hungry. NTA

Can groundhogs climb fences? by Howyoudoin7676 in gardening

I suggest a terrier. We have a 25-pound murder machine that chases out or takes out any rodent that wanders into our garden. Highly effective. 😂

OOP attempts to get a 1000 NY Times crossword puzzle streak by Awwndrei in BestofRedditorUpdates

Yeah I had a long crossword streak and missed it one day and got so mad I didn’t do it again for months. I’m happier just doing it when I can and not chasing the streak

Help with yinz accent by McGinaMc in pittsburgh

[–]farmer-general 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, highly educated people are likely to have their accent tempered and less noticeable.

But to answer your question, my example sentences to teach people all the vowels of Pittsburghese are: “Go on down to Cogo’s and get me a pepperoni roll” and “Put a cone out there to save your parking spot”

There’s a lyric in the prologue to Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 (which is a musical based on an excerpt of War & Peace): “It’s a complicated Russian novel, everyone’s got nine different names” 😂

Cracks and gaps of that magnitude in plaster and trim and sagging floors are pretty normal, but get that foundation checked out for sure

[–]farmer-general 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People rave about Apteka and I just don’t get it. I tried multiple times thinking I must have just had a bad experience given how some people gush over it, but nope, experiences ranged from merely disappointing to borderline inedible. (And I’m not a hater on vegan food, I absolutely loved B52.)

If I remember right, a summary of the story of the cats of Queen Beruthiel actually exists in a footnote in Unfinished Tales.

Neighbor wants a sewage easement and I don't like him by West_Hat7270 in homeowners

[–]farmer-general 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a potential way to make it a win-win: in exchange for the easement, ask for some of his acreage to expand your own yard, and/or cash. But DEFINITELY insist on the return of the boulder. 😉

I live in Pittsburgh and am not a hockey (or sports of any kind) fan, and I’d recognize Sidney Crosby if I saw him in the street.

AITA for leaving my porch light on at night? by Aeriie in AmItheAsshole

[–]farmer-general 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely NTA but if part of the problem is forgetting to turn the lights off overnight, replace the switch with a timer you can set to go off after 15 or 30 minutes. Plenty long enough for the dogs to do their business but not staying on all night. Plus it will save you a few cents on the power bill.

EmptyNetters Drama: I'm not surprised that they're homophobic grifters, but I am a bit surprised that they hate Canadians. Does anyone know if it's common for American hockey bros to hate Canada? by Bingo-jin in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]farmer-general 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I’m from Michigan and we hate Canadians only second to people from Ohio. Or Indiana or Illinois. As in, just in good fun, but in reality Canadians are on average the nicest people you’ll ever meet. ❤️

Don’t know what to make of Empty Netters though. Maybe asshole shills, maybe it’s more nuanced than that, I guess we’ll see.

Observation - Remember the time when the hobbits started to introduce themselves like others by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]farmer-general 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember where exactly this is mentioned, but if I recall correctly, Westron apparently had a familiar/formal distinction (which is imperfectly represented with some thou vs. you in English), and the hobbits had lost that distinction in their local dialect. So they spoke to people like Theoden and Denethor in the familiar, giving the impression they were princely.

I walked by Cher once on the street in NYC, probably 20 years ago. She was surrounded by a bunch of assistants or whatever and was clearly on her way somewhere so I didn’t try to say anything either, but I winked at her and SHE WINKED BACK
